Rhythm Incursions – Best of 09 pt 2

We wrap up 2009 with part 2 of our ‘best of’ mix. This is the last show of the year and continues to run down some of our favourite tracks from the last 12 months.
The mix starts with our second ‘Labels of 09′ mini feature looking at Ramp Recordings, a label that for me has had an incredible year and put out good music, consistently without worrying about scenes, genres and things like that. Doing eclectic isn’t necessarily hard though, doing it well however is and for me Ramp is one of those labels who managed to do just that: serve up a truly eclectic mix of releases, artists and styles and do so with a cohesion, quality control and consistency that only makes the music shine that much more. Add to this some quality artwork and an ear for snapping up producers that are bubbling under, like FaltyDL, Shortstuff or Tokimonsta, and you have a label which you need to make time for if you haven’t yet.
As I said they’ve had a rather busy year with something close to ten or so releases so I’ve managed to fit as much as I can in this mini feature with pretty much one track from every release this year, bar one or two. If you like what you hear then check the website and catch up with some seriously good music.
Elsewhere part 2 of the best of 09 features music from the likes of Darkstar, Peverelist, Joker, Dorian Concept, Daedelus, Clutchy Hopkins, Soundspecies, Mount Kimbie, Hudson Mohawke, Floating Points, Machinedrum, Poirier, Blue Daisy, Jamie Vex’d, Quarta330 and many more.
As usual tracklist and download links below. And if you haven’t yet may we suggest you sign up to the newsletter, RSS feed or iTunes feed and this way you’ll never miss a show.
So that’s it for 2009, and the first decade of this century/millenium. Many thanks to all our listeners, all the labels and artists we’ve worked with and who’ve supported us, all our guests, our extended family, DDay One, Mr Trick, 2tall and everyone else. It’s been a great year and here’s to 2010!
Peace

Rhythm Incursions – Best of 09 pt1

And so here we are at the end of the year, and the decade. Let us therefore indulge in this most seasonal of traditions with a two-part, end of year ‘best of’ show for 2009. The idea was to build on last year’s first installment, and then before I knew it I’d sat down in front of the computer with a shortlist of 100+ tracks and the idea of actually doing a proper mix as opposed to a simple selection of tracks. As with last year there is no talking this time round, just pure music selection for your enjoyment.
We start with part 1 and 50 odd tracks which have all been highlights of the year here at Rhythm Inc towers from the likes of Architeq, Paul White, Alice Russell, Raekwon, DOOM, Oh No, Heliocentrics, Loops Haunt, LuckyMe, Robot Koch, Milanese, King Midas Sound, 2nd Class Citizen and many, many more. The selection is a nice representation of this year’s playlists too with a couple of previously un-aired goodies thrown in on top. As always complete tracklist below with link to the mix for those that aren’t subscribed to our feed or iTunes channels (hint hint).
As I said this best of show is more of a ‘mix’ than our normal shows – everything has been mixed and mashed up to allow me to fit as much music as I can in 75 minutes and still give every track a chance to shine.
Part two will be dropping very shortly, either on Christmas eve or Boxing day (the day after xmas) – it all depends on how much I manage to get done tonight. It will feature another 50 or so tracks from our best of 2009 list as well as the second ‘Labels of 09′ mini-feature, this time looking at the output of Ramp Recordings which is by far one of the stand out labels of the year for us. And don’t forget to check last month’s show for part of our ‘Labels of 09′ mini-feature which looked at the excellent One Handed Music.
So I won’t keep you any longer. Get stuck in, lie back, crank up the volume, ignore the family members and enjoy the first half of our best of 09 show!

Primus Luta presents: Proto-Heads
Primus Luta, who you may remember from his excellent ‘Beat Construction’ guest mix we aired at the beginning of the year, has just released a new project. Entitled ‘Proto-Heads’ is a truly fascinating and engrossing effort that takes in audio, video and more by way of what could well be the world’s first interactive mixtape. Trailer is above.
The release is composed of an album of early tracks composed by Primus Luta on the Monome, available for free, an extras album, available for a ‘name-your-fee’ price, with all instrumentals and an hour of bonus music and finally the interactive mixtape. I’ve included all the links below as well as some more explanation from the man – so get stuck in!
We’ve been bumping the album for a few days now – its rather rugged aesthetic works nicely, especially when you give your attention to the music as there’s a lot going on at certain times. I recommend you grab this for the forthcoming holiday season and bump it loud!
Release – http://store.avanturb.com/album/presents-proto-heads
Interactive Mix – http://protoheads.avanturb.com
Extras – http://store.avanturb.com/album/presents-proto-heads-extras
Proto-Heads is a collection of early experiments for the monome created by Primus Luta between 2006-2008. The release itself is a mixtape using a selection of Proto-Heads tracks blended with vocals by everyone from Ghostface to Peter Gabriel. It is available as a free download from the AvantUrb store.
In addition the release is paired with an interactive mixtape. The interactive experience gives users a visual guide to the music with commentary from Primus Luta, with links to related media, including videos and monome notation. This experience created by GtP Studios may represent the first online interactive mixtape as well as the first mixtape exclusively made with monome music.
The last part of this package is the Extras. This is a name your own price paid download which includes the instrumental version of the release and over an hour of bonus music.
As previously stated, all of this music dates back to 2008 and earlier, so as an additional bonus one of the more recent Primus Luta productions has been uploaded for streaming.

This is a cover of the classic Autechre song ”Eutow”. The bulk of this was done on the monome including the drums (mnlg), synths (4|5clcs) and all of the effects.
Everything is live right now. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Thanks in advance for your support.

KenLo Craqnuques – Ville-Marie Mixette

We head all the way to Montreal, Canada for our third guest mix this month, and our last guest mix of the year too. KenLo Craqnuques may not be a name you’re familiar with, though if you’re a listener of the show you’ll remember him from a few months back, and yet there is little doubt for me that he’ll be making waves in the near future – so get familiar as they say and discover the sounds of one of Montreal’s most interesting and striking beatmakers.
I first heard of him around the beginning of the year as he was included on the Beat Dimensions vol2 compilation, and his name definitely stood out. Shortly after that I came across some of his self-released beat tapes and then a few months ago I once more came across his latest beat tapes thanks to the Poisonous Paragraphs blog. All of which led me to hit him up via Soundcloud a few weeks ago and ask if he’d put together a guest mix for the show.
For me, his beats have a rawness, swing and feeling to them that really encapsulates nicely what’s been happening over the last few years in hip hop and what’s great about the modern beatmaking movement. And for this guest mix he’s put together a great selection of his own, mainly unreleased work, alongside other things he’s been feeling which hopefully helps give you a good idea of who he is musically and what are some things you might have missed this year.
Here’s what he had to say:
Str8 Mount Reeaaaaaaal musique! This is a underground splish splash of the lower-lip-island sounds I dig these days. Skitted out with beats straight out my road laptop, around the city. From the green to the orange river.
If you haven’t yet than I strongly recommended you go download all of KenLo’s colour beat tapes (I believe there’s about 5) which are available from his myspace. Also check his addition to the Beat Dimensions 2 compilation, all of which is worth your time.
And I guess all that’s left to say is simply lay back, crank up the stereo and enjoy la mixette! Much love and thanks to KenLo for this time.

Benjamin One – Digital Summary

I discovered Benjamin One via Soundcloud, not sure how or when but that’s where I first heard his music. At one point, listening to his new beats and remixes it became clear that he also knew people I’d known/worked with over the years from around Bristol way. So I continued to check his stuff throughout the year, liking his penchant for headnodding beats and the odd, over-the-top bass indulgence.
About 3 weeks or so ago, as I was listening to another one of new tracks I thought his music would be a perfect fit for the show – a message request later and he’d kindly agreed to do a little guest mix for us.
So without further ado I’ll leave you in the very capable hands of Benjamin One, with a short but very sweet mix of work he’s done this year and things that have inspired him. A few words from the man himself before the jump…
Hip hop producer from the south west UK, inspired by hip hop culture and artists like Depth Charge, Photek, Dynametrix, Red Ninja, Dillinger, Hardnoise, Katch 22, MC Mello, Kold Sweat Records, Music of Life Records and a with very live show on my MPC sampler and beat machines that has let me share stages with Gaslampkiller, Anti Pop Consortium, Dose One and Jel, Bullion, Edan, Sole, Slugabed, Rekordah and many more both as a solo artist and as part of the Vertebrae and Root Elevation collectives

Opti – French Dubs In The Mix
December 4, 2009 by Laurent
We begin our short series of guest mixes to see in the end of the year with France, courtesy of Opti and the Jarring Effects label.
Based in Lyon and providing music and good vibrations since 1993, Jarring Effects have been on our radar for a while but came to front this year when they hit us up with promos for a range of their recent releases including French dub outfits like High Tone and EZ3kiel as well as South African MC Ben Sharpa, British sub bass ‘freak’ Scorn alongside and many more.
We got talking and out came this guest spot. Originally intended to be a label showcase they’ve instead asked Opti to provide a mix of dub-influenced tracks that trace the links between the traditional dub and its many modern, electronic variants. Additionally the mix also links the label’s output in terms of French dub outfits such as High Tone and their primarily UK counterparts such The Bug, Architeq or even Boxcutter.
It’s a real ride into modern dub vibrations that benefits from a crank on the volume knob (or buttons) and some room to skank a leg.
Below are some words from the label as well as some links for both Jarring Effects and Opti:
Jarring Effects is a Lyon-based independent label. Recognized as leading the French dub scene, Jarring Effects’ sound continues to ramify and proliferate, in the process exploring all fields of electronic, urban and bass music.
Over more than a decade, Jarring Effects has released close to a 100 records, from pure live dub (High Tone, EZ3kiel, Brain Damage, Scorn), to underground hip hop with no boundaries (Ben Sharpa, Playdoe, Oddatee, Reverse Engineering) and advanced electronic music (R Zatz, Interlope, Von Magnet).
Beside this main label activity, Jarring Effects also runs a record studio (JFX Studio), organises a yearly festival called Riddim Collision, runs a booking agency and is one the founding members of the platform CD1D, which gathers more than 100 labels to provide digital and physical music.
We are glad to introduce listeners of Rhythm Incursions to our label with a DJ set from Opti (Airflex labs / Jarring Effects crew). We hope you will enjoy this dubwise mix.
For more Jarring Effect related info check the website, as well as the associated Riddim Collision festival and CD1D collective. For more on Opti check the myspace.
Next guest is from Ben One out in Bristol and goes live in 5 days. Stay tuned but for now, as they say, let’s get on with the music. Download link and tracklist below. As usual iTunes and RSS subscribers should have the mix on its way to them and if you’re not yet subscribed be sure to hit the relevant buttons on the right hand side.
