About

The history

Rhythm Incursions was born in 2004/2005, partly out of the work Mr Trick had done on Turntable Radio in the previous years. Wanting to move away from the constraining world of turntablism and expose people to wider musical horizons, Rhythm Incursions was born with the original tagline of “picking up where hip hop stops”. The show aimed to air music that took hip hop as a starting point and built on it. From the leftfield work of the Bully Records label through to the dubbed-out illbient of the Wordsound label, from The Bug’s sonic experimentation to Machine Drum’s shattered beats.

The show began in January 2004 airing on London’s Resonance 104.4FM. With creative partner-in-crime Waxfactor stepping up to co-present, the deal was done. Blending choice beats with spotlights on artists or labels, picks of the fortnight and a 30 minute mix section, the shows covered a fair amount of ground, and brought the finest underground music to the ears of, well, as many people as possible.

In addition to the FM shows, Rhythm Incursions was archived on Samurai FM and started podcasting one off guest mixes and special shows. Most notably, and as with its sister show Turntable Radio, Rhythm Incursions podcasts were among the first to feature music aired with the consent of the labels and artists involved.

The past

In the summer of 2008 the show ended its FM residence after three years and moved to a podcast only format. With this move came additional change. The original tagline was update to ‘discerning music for discerning ears’ – a statement more relevant to the changing musical landscape which saw music that took hip hop as its starting point become a de facto world standard.

The presenting team was also expanded with previous guests such as Dday One from Los Angeles’ Content label, Carlo from Bully Records in Canada and Joey Beats all joining as more regular guest presenters alongside Mr Trick, Waxfactor and Laurent Fintoni.

Then in late 2008 Trick and Waxfactor hung up their presenting hats, with Trick moving to work full time on his new show with Wrongtom – a show born out of guest sessions on Rhythm Incursions. At the same time Carlo and Joey Beats also moved on to other works.

Throughout this whole time the show regularly featured guest mixes and label showcases from artists close to the show’s musical ethos – from Project Mooncircle to The Agriculture, Chrissy Murderbot to DJ Pain.

The present

With Trick and Waxfactor ‘retired’, Laurent Fintoni took the helm of Rhythm Incursions and continued to carry the show forward into the new decade with a monthly 2 hour session of new music and features alongside bi-monthly shows from DDay One in L.A and regular guest mixes from artists and labels both new and old. In that period Rhythm Incursions increased its reputation as one of the finest new music podcasts around with a growing regular audience.

In early 2010, feeling the need to once more give the show an injection of new blood and enthusiasm, a new team of presenters was drafted alongside Laurent and DDay One. These new collaborators were chosen from people who had been guests on the show and close collaborators of Laurent during his time in Japan.

As of March 2010 Rhythm Incursions now comes to listeners three times a month from different continents:

In addition to these three monthly shows, DDay One continues to deliver his ‘In Session with’ series every 2 to 3 months and guest mixes are now a regular monthly feature including a new monthly guest series in association with the Friends of Friends label in L.A which has so far featured mixes from artists in the U.S, UK, Germany and Spain.

Rhythm Incursions guest mixes have taken everything from hip hop to dubstep, soul to dub, rock to reggae and more and have featured established and upcoming artists and collectives including close friends of the show, extended family and new artists we love such as Onra, 2tall, My Dry Wet Mess, Ichiro_, Mr Beatnick, B-Ju, Vangel, DJ Pain, Fulgeance, Throwing Snow, Waxfactor, Himuro Yoshiteru, Monday Jazz, LuckyMe, Loops Haunt, LV, Kenlo Craqnuques and many, many more. Check them all out on our guest mix page.
