<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

Its no secret we’re huge fans of both Paul White and his label One-Handed Music, whose releases have been consistently excellent to date. So, to celebrate the release of Paul’s excellent new album “The Strange Dreams of Paul White” we thought we’d shake down the label for one of the deluxe copies of the album that comes in a screen-printed pillowcase. All you need to do is this: email us the name of one other artist on One-Handed Music, sending your entry to paulwhitecontest@rhythm-incursions.com. That’s it. Simple eh? Deadline for entries is Friday, 5th June.

If you’ve not heard Paul’s album, head over to his excellent Bandcamp page where you can preview all tracks on the spot. I’d also recommend you check his other releases, where you can buy both digital downloads (on a very fair “name your price” basis) and CD copies if you prefer.

Oh and someone was saying to me the other day that he never enters contests because he never thinks he’ll win. Now, not to give too much away here, but trust us, the entries for this aren’t as huge in number as you’d think, so your chances of winning are excellent indeed. Go!

Its a new year and we all need the pickup. Good thing then that ZedVantz is here with just what you need… Fresh from his awesome Turntable Jazz mix that we aired last year, we got an email in our inbox just a couple of days ago with this – a mix we’d describe as “the mother of all pick-me-ups”. Not content with delivering some killer audio though, ZedVantz also enclosed a comic that is, quite frankly, stunning. More of that in a second though…

Flipping from hook to hook like a gazelle, on this mix ZedVantz drops all those riffs you know and love. Now some would think this would mean you listening thinking “heard it…”, but we’re talking about CLASSICS here dammit. At Rhythm Inc Towers that had one effect: we all got smiling and hopping about the place. Sublime, and just the thing to blow away the cobwebs of January and get you screaming “HELLS YEAH – BRING IT ON!!!”

And now the comic. We can’t say enough to big this up, so let’s just show it in full eh?

Heeeeeeeeee’s back! As promised by the man himself, here is the second installment of Carlo’s φ (pronounced “Phi”) series. Missed the first one? Where were you, under a bush?! Here’s what Carlo said then about the series:

The general idea with this mix is to play edits of songs I find particularly interesting/engaging/inspiring that did not yet get the recognition I think they deserved. As with “Vol. 888″, the idea is not to mix songs according to tempo, but rather according to tuning and feel, in the high-school-mix-tape-for-your-girl fashion. And no, once again, there will be no tracklist, but feel free to drop me a line if you need specific info about a track…I’ll see what I can do. Massive thanks to everyone that spread the word about any of my releases, as well as those that bought my music…There’s a bunch more coming your way. Final thanks go to the Rhythm Incursions extended family, for allowing me to contribute to this constant, impressive musical output. Epic.

We love Carlo. We love his mixes. We REALLY loved Phi 1. And trust us, we’re loving Phi 2… possibly even more. Now: GO GET SOME.

The main change is the front page, where we now have the rather snazzy Featured Shows section, as well as our new Featured Video which will allow us to get all AV on your ass with some videos of tracks we’re loving. Overall though the layout is the main alteration, with what we hope will be a more engaging experience for you lovely users, along with improved formatting on articles too. The redesign also comes as part of a wider strategy to link the various shows run by Motive Unknown, namely Turntable Radio and Mr Trick and Wrongtom, and have each show operating with its own website that shares this layout.

How do you like it so far though? Tell us below!

I can’t lie: its always a pleasure when I get an email from Joe saying “here’s the next show”. Why? Because I can’t second-guess what he’s going to deliver, and I like that. The first show he did as a permanent presenter for us threw in some real curveballs; blues and soul that I thought only I tended to listen to regularly. This time around, Joe steps up with an admirable show theme, celebrating the unsung heroes of modern soul music; those singer/songwriters who tend to fly under the radar but who are capable of delivering music every bit as nice as those classic soul years of the 60s and 70s.

As Joe himself says: “some of you hip hoppers may not like this, but you know what? TFB”. Whilst I’d like to think he has a point, I’d beg to differ for the simple reason that I think the people who listen to Rhythm Incursions have broad tastes, and in this instance the selection is so stellar, you won’t fail but to love it. Some real surprises lurk in there too; who’d have though Ray LaMontagne had a track like Three More Days in his output? Maybe you did… but I know I didn’t.

But enough talk; grab the show and take a listen. If you’re anything like me you’ll be making notes from the tracklisting below and feeling good that you have a bunch of awesome artists to go learn about. Go!

Back in November 2007, Bully Records’ alumni Carlo sent us a mix, entitled Vol.888. It was a pause-tape style mix, and showcased a bunch of obscure tracks, some of which had been sampled by the likes of Four Tet and Sixtoo. With no tracklisting offered, it was almost like a sample spotters’ challenge, dropping song after song where you thought “goddamn… where have I heard that before??”. Quite aside from that element of course, it was also a stellar selection.

Now, I’ll be honest here: we thought people would like this mix. However we had no idea how fast word would spread and how many downloads this thing would cop. A year on, and we’ve totalled the downloads to be well past the 12,000 mark.

Cut to the present, and its time for Carlo’s next offering: φ. Pronounced “Phi”, this is the first part of an ongoing series, and trust me, if you liked Vol.888, you’re gonna go insane for this. I asked Carlo to give us a few words on the mix:

Epic.

As Carlo says, there is more to come and this is just the beginning. But enough words: grab the mix and get listening.
