sasQwax – Gut & Baste

It’s with great pleasure that we welcome back to Rhythm Inc one of the founding fathers of the show, Waxfactor aka sasQwax. Having been lying low for the last few years (real life has a habit of getting in the way) he’s back with a guest mix which he’s been promising us for a while – so it’s a double joyous occasion.

Without further ado here’s what the man himself had to say on the subject of this mix:

This mix started off a long time ago – over 12 months, at least – but, for one reason or another, it never got finished. It has sat at about 18 mins for most of that time as I’d hit a point where I wasn’t happy with it but didn’t know how to fix it. With my fifth (and final!) child arriving around this point, the mix remained untouched for a long time. Until a fortnight ago, in fact. To cut a long story short: I figured it out.

I started off listening to hip-hop at around the age of 10. The music was what hooked me – the Inspector Gadget sample in Doug E Fresh & Slick Rick “The Show” actually – and from that point on, that was pretty much it. Over the years my tastes changed to the point where I started listening less to the tracks the hip-hop producers were making and more to the ones they were listening to – the ones they were sampling. I went through the Blue Note, CTI, etc… periods and picked up a lot of great music but when things started hitting the psych, prog and kraut rock areas, that’s when it really took over. Through reissues and compilations, and through mixes from people like Andy Votel, Cherrystones and the Trapdoor mixes, I was introduced to masses of new music and I guess this mix is kind of a tribute to them and the music they turned me onto.

It’s not really a mix in the strictest of senses. No tune remains untouched and a few of them are probably entirely unrecognisable. I hope nobody responsible for them minds. Although I don’t care, at the same time. Because I’m hip-hop, nahmean?

So a perfect return to the RI airwaves for Wax with a mix in the finest tradition of what we stand for – discerning music for discerning ears. If you liked Carlo’s mixes for example then this one will definitely be up your street.

For more on Wax check out his website, and look out for the new Twisting the Frame compilation which features him among various others.

And for now get stuck into Gut & Baste and enjoy!

Jammer – Better Than (Lorn remix)

Anyone who listens to the shows regularly or has been following us for a while now should know Lorn. Our story with the Milwaukee native goes waaaaaay back to the scratch internet boards days when he was making some of the most amazing, mind-bending loops for people to cut over. A few years ago he started reappearing on the radar with his own productions, and in 2009 his first proper debut album was snapped up by Brainfeeder for release (if you don’t count the extensive amount of music he’s put out for free before that, or the break record he released).

All of which only added to the surprise I got a few weeks back when Big Dada hit me up to say that Lorn had remixed the new Jammer single that the label will be releasing next week. Yes that’s right – Lorn from Milwaukee remixing Jammer, the grime legend from London. It doesn’t get better than this, literally.

‘Better Than’ is out March 15 on Big Dada, with original, instrumental and aforementioned Lorn remix which you can download/stream below courtesy of the lovely Dada people. Described as a dubstep remix elsewhere, I can see why people would say that, though personally Lorn’s take doesn’t particularly make me think of any specific genre, it’s just an incredibly heavy, crushing flip of the original, taking Jammer’s vocals into the territories Lorn is most comfortable in – dark, vicious territories with towering drums and bass lines.

If you want more from the man be sure to check his myspace, as well as the mini feature we did on him last year. And stay tuned for more previews of his album, ‘Nothing Else’ which will drop on Brainfeeder in June 2010. For now though enjoy this beauty of a remix.

Primus Luta Presents: The Vanguard vol. 3

We finish our series of exclusive mixes from Primus Luta with volume 3 of The Vanguard. As explained in the original post The Vanguard is a four-volume deep series of mixes whereby Primus Luta explores the ramifications and evolution of modern electronic and hip hop productions and how boundaries have been blurred – geographically, stylistically and genre-wise too.

The final part of the mix will be aired by our good friends at Percussion Lab next week. Following this, on March 19th, Primus Luta will be launching his Heads Project.

Here’s some words on the project from Primus himself:

To borrow from Me’Shell NdegéOcello, this is an anthroplogical mix, compiled at the end of the first decade of the 21st century. The goal was to capture the changing sound of music. A change that draws no lines of division. It is bound to no genre, no social group, global not regional. In a constant state of flux, it will only continue to evolve and grow.

There are some who are threatened by this type of change. They wish to deny it, holding to the comfort zones of the past. Then there are the others. The Vanguard. Those who see the potential and thrive.

This series brings together over 125 artists, each in their own way charting a path on this new musical frontier. Listen carefully and take notes because indeed, this is the sound of tomorrow, today.

Each mix is accompanied by a visual interface in the form of an embed (see below) that displays the tracklist as you listen to it and includes interactive information and links on the artists and songs playing.

Many thanks go to Primus Luta for letting us feature these awesome mixes on the site and we hope you enjoyed the ride as much as we have. Be sure to check the final chapter and then go and peep his Heads Project. Expect to hear more from him on these pages in the future.

For now though, sit back and crank it up. Volume 3 of the sound of tomorrow, today begins here.

Primus Luta Presents: The Vanguard vol. 2

We continue our exclusive series of mixes by Primus Luta with volume 2 of The Vanguard. As explained in the original post last week, The Vanguard is a series of mixes in four volumes whereby Primus Luta explores the ramifications and diversity of the new wave of music makers who have blurred not just geographical boundaries but also those of style and genre.

Volume two picks up where volume one left – a heady mix of beats, vocals and more mashed and mixed via the custom application scrtch developed in Plogue Bidule for the Monome and Stribe Duo. Each volume is accompanied by a visual interface in the form of an embed (see below) that displays the tracklist with additional interactive information alongside it.

This series brings together over 125 artists, each in their own way charting a path on this new musical frontier. Listen carefully and take notes because indeed, this is the sound of tomorrow, today.

As announced originally we’ll be airing the first three volumes exclusively here on Rhythm Incursions before Percussion Lab airs the final and fourth volume. On March 19th Primus Luta will be launching his Heads Project.

So without further here is part 2 of The Vanguard featuring your favourite producers, singers, MCs and more in ways you’d never imagined to hear them. And that’s not even the half of it. Sit back and crank up loud.

Remember if you want the tracklist you must listen to the mix via the embed!

Rhythm Incursions – February 2010

February 26, 2010 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent

It’s February, the weather on this side of the world could still be primarily described as apocalyptic and the recession is still going on apparently. All of which means you need some fresh new music and aural pleasures more than ever. Fear not, we’ve got you covered.

Up this month we take a close look at Mux Mool, an NYC-based artist we first discovered thanks to Jakub at Ghostly Int and who will be releasing a new album on the label in the coming weeks. We look at some new and older tracks of his, showing his versatile approach to hip hop and electronic music. It goes without saying we’re big fans.

Elsewhere this month we’ve got lots of new, forthcoming tracks including new Big Dada and Ninja Tune releases by Infesticons, Bonobo, Jagga Jazzist and Juice Aleem, new tracks from Fulgeance, Pixelord, FaltyDL, Daisuke Tanabe, Kyle Hall, Nocando featuring Busdriver, Soul Litchfield, Rudi Zygadlo, Oh No and some tasty exclusives from Wrongtom, Om Unit, Tatsuki and Depakote which you won’t hear anywhere else (unless the artists themselves are bumping it).

So without further ado I’ll leave you for another 2 hours of musical goodness, and excuse my rather gruff tone of voice on the presenting tip but I’ve been fighting a cold (or is that man flu?) for the last week and haven’t been feeling very well. Still you can’t stop the good shit so get stuck in, sit back and crank it up to 11 on the volume dial.

As usual the playlist, see below, includes full links and details to all artists and labels pages/websites where you can buy or download the music. If you like what you hear than go support it.

See you next month for more of the same and look out for more exclusive mixes from Primus Luta and Himuro Yoshiteru in the coming weeks.

Tranqill x Free The Robots x Take x Matthewdavid

February 24, 2010 by Laurent

I got rather swamped in quality freebies in the last 24 hours, leading me to do the only logical thing – combine them all into one easy to digest summary. From London to L.A via Dublin welcome into your life fresh new, and free, music from 4 rather talented artists and 3 rather dope labels.

First up is London’s Tranqill, whose ‘Hidden Treasures’ EP has been a very long time coming and will finally see the light of day in a few weeks thanks to the always on point One Handed Music label. The first single if you will from the EP is Deadly Wintaz a video for which you can view above before heading over to his bandcamp to download the track for free and the whole EP for £2. Yes you read that correctly – £2 buys you what is quite possibly the nicest ‘uk hip hop’ release in a while (and we used that tag likely, but you all know what we mean).

As OHM put it:

Tranqill makes the kind of raw, spontaneous, thrilling rap music that made us fall in love with those classic Wu-Tang records.

We couldn’t agree more. I can’t remember the last time I was this hyped about a rap release from London. Check the bandcamp preview below for more.
<a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/tranqill.bandcamp.com/album/the-hidden-treasures-ep');" href="http://tranqill.bandcamp.com/album/the-hidden-treasures-ep">Chips &amp; Cheese by Tranqill</a>

Next up is L.A’s Alpha Pup who are about to release the also long-awaited debut album from Free The Robots. It drops end of March but in the meantime the label has kindly given a track for free to download via their newly relaunched website. We got the album last night and am very excited to give it a proper listen – expect some previews in our March show for sure and more good things from Free The Robots, one of the many L.A producers who hasn’t really yet ‘blown’ up if you will despite some already stand-out productions and work for labels like Equinox in Europe.

Download Free The Robot’s ‘Orion’s Belt Buckle’ and be sure to check the newly relaunched Alpha Pup site and go cop their recent Nocando album – first essential rap album of the year for me.

Last up is Dublin’s All City Records who are about to drop the second of their 10×10 series, which we already mentioned last month. The second in this series of 10″ records from L.A based producers teams up Matthewdavid with Take aka Sweatson Klank, a favourite of ours and someone we’ve had the chance to meet and hang with last summer which was a real eye-opener as far as learning about the history of the beat scene in L.A and its progression through the last decade.

Splitting this 10″ the guys do an amazing work further showing the versatility of the current L.A underground. We’re very happy to be able to give you a taste in the form of two tracks, one from each artist. See below for stream and download links.

Look out for more from All City including a Musinah 7″ with production by Flying Lotus and 00 Genesis.

For now though get stuck into all this free goodness and be sure to go and support the artists and labels if you like what you hear. Look out for more previews from all these guys in the March show. Much thanks and love to the labels and artists.

Primus Luta Presents: The Vanguard vol. 1

February 23, 2010 by Laurent

As announced recently on our twitter feed we’re starting a new series of exclusive mixes over the next three weeks courtesy of Primus Luta, a US based artist we first hooked up with and aired on Rhythm Inc last year thanks to twitter (social networks aren’t all time wasting as some would have you believe). In April 09 he dropped ‘Beat Construction’ for us, a mix of productions from 79 to 99 that he felt helped usher and form the current wave of modern productions.

He returns to Rhythm Inc with The Vanguard – a series of mixes that span four volumes and set to explore the ramifications of the aforementioned current wave of modern music productions that have broken down genre, geographical and technological barriers. The first three volumes will be aired on Rhythm Inc weekly starting today, while the fourth one will be hosted by our good friends over at Percussion Lab. Following this on March 19 Primus Luta will drop the first single and online installation of his Heads Project.

Alongside each mix you also have a visual accompaniment in the form of an embed (see below) that gives you the tracklist for the mix in real time alongside additional information on the artists and tracks being played.

I won’t give away too much, so instead will let Primus Luta do the talking:

To borrow from Me’Shell NdegéOcello, this is an anthroplogical mix, compiled at the end of the first decade of the 21st century. The goal was to capture the changing sound of music. A change that draws no lines of division. It is bound to no genre, no social group, global not regional. In a constant state of flux, it will only continue to evolve and grow. All of these mixes were done live using the custom application scrtch developed in Plogue Bidule for the Monome and Stribe Duo.

So without further ado, prepare for a real sonic ride in the finest Rhythm Inc tradition too, spanning genres and styles.

You can download the mix below and/or stream it using the custom-made embed which as mentioned will also give you the tracklist and additional info for the music as it happens. And stay tuned for volumes 2 and 3 dropping in the next weeks. Massive shouts to Primus Luta for this.
