<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

Our L.A correspondent – and part-time presenter – Dday One sent this mix from London based Plus Low Overthrow for your consumption. Ironic isn’t it that it would travel half across the world before coming back to the city where it came from for broadcast. Here’s how the story goes…

The Mix represents side A from a cassette mailed to DdayOne in Los Angeles – conceived moments before my turntable broke, R.I.P.; a blend principally of European Jazz pressings, new and vintage – amidst a few exotic vagrancies. Enjoy.

-Plus Low Overthrow

So another mix to add to our eclectic selection series. 40 minutes of analogue to digital business. You can find out more about Plus Low Overthrow on his blog. Thanks as always to Dday One for his curation. Enjoy!

Right then, it’s been a busy beginning of 2012 here at Rhythm Inc towers so busy in fact we couldn’t deliver this show in time for January. It more than makes up for the delay however by showcasing a plethora of producers/artists/labels which we think are going to have a good 2012 and who you should definitely keep an eye out for.

Titled the 2012 Watchlist, we opted to do an entire show focused on these new talents rather than a shorter mini feature – so everything in this month’s show aside from a couple of oldies is 100% approved by us as being hot shit for 2012. We’ve got bags of music from new and upcoming talents including the likes of ENA, MNLTHM, Youngteamm, Darkhouse Family, EAN, Danny Scrilla, Beat Inc, Ssaliva, Tehbis, Sweatson Klank, Memory9, Homeboy Sandman and Soosh – some of these names you might recognise as they’ve been grafting for a few years, others are recent additions to our ‘quality’ index. Label wise the likes of Hessle Audio, Astro:Dynamics, Keysound (who were our label of 2011), Ninja Tune, Sonic Router, Brainmath and 7even Recordings all get a look in – some are established others brand new, but all of them are likely to make an impact this year. And as mentioned we’ve also got classics and new music from established heads like Downliners Sekt, Machinedrum and B-Ju. I don’t know about you but I think it’s going to be a good year.

As always you can download and/or stream the show below, or simply subscribe to our Newsletter, RSS or iTunes feed and never miss anything.

We’ll be resuming regular broadcasting schedules this month with new RIPL and RIRS shows as well as our new monthly BLN.FM residency – the February edition of which goes live tomorrow and will be archived here later in the month. We’ve also got a bag of new guest mixes coming – including plenty of the people in our 2012 watchlist – so watch out for these.

So without further ado, enjoy, crank loud and have a good week!

Ken One is family. One of Japan’s best scratch DJs, he’s been down with us since day one when Turntable Radio was the focus and when we moved to Japan he hooked us up with contacts and more. He’s also part of the Raid System crew, so he’s even more family. All of which is to say that when he sends us stuff it’s kinda like a no-brainer. Hell he’s already been featured round these parts a few times.

This latest mix follows from the previous Skratch Evolution instalments as it was in fact the promo mix Ken put together for Skratch Evolution 4 – the latest chapter of his ongoing live event in Tokyo that brings together the best scratchers and beat makers for a day of musical fun. Short but sweet it covers tons of our favourite classics with jams from Jeru, Hashim, Ricci Rucker and Samiyam. 30 mins of hip hop fun laced with world class cuts to get you moving.

You can keep up with Ken One over at his blog and look out for shows in and around Tokyo over the coming year as always.

We round off the first month of the year with a bit of junglism – a perfect remedy for the current cold weather afflicting our part of the world. Tim Reaper is a young jungle/dnb producer I was introduced to by the always on it Joe Muggs. Since then his Soundcloud page has been a regular stopping point, especially when I need an amen fix (check his Amen Warfare mini mix for some chopped up bliss).

As always one thing leading to another we got chatting on Twitter and we invited Tim to deliver a mix for the show, which he did in the shape of this short but intensely sweet mini mix. With only two years’ producing experience under his belt, Tim’s already showing the kind of flair that bodes well for the future, especially in his ability to reconcile the sounds and vibes of Jungle’s golden era with its various modern incarnations and evolutions. He’s had releases on Trace’s DSCI4 label and forthcoming ones on Inperspective among others – there’s plenty forthcoming he tells us, so be sure to keep an eye out.

Here’s what Tim had to say about the mix itself:

Now, about this mix, it was done in my sequencer because I don’t own any sort of hardware that I could use for DJing, but I still get sent tracks from fellow producers and I buy tracks that I like that get released, so rather than just sitting on the tracks, doing nothing with them, I thought that it would be good to present them in a way.

After doing a minimix to promote a release I was working on, I got into the habit of making these types of minimixes, which I think are a great way to present music in a short but digestible manner, so I did this for you guys, kept it short as it’s only 20 minutes long, but I managed to fit in some great tracks, signed and unsigned from some of my top producers about right now.

So there you have, the perfect jump off point for the start of the week!

For more on Tim Reaper be sure to check his Soundcloud page where you’ll find previews of most of his work and more mini mixes to satisfy additional Junglist cravings you may have. As always a big thanks to Tim for taking the time to do this.

As announced last year we’ve started a new monthly, live broadcast over in Berlin on the excellent BLN.FM – the city’s finest non-profit radio station (and I believe Germany’s first station of the kind!). When I say live, the show is being broadcasted live but is pre-recorded. Each month myself (Laurent Fintoni), Primus Luta who helms RIPL and Raid System (aka XLII and Broken Haze) who helm RIRS will take turns in curating the one hour mix/playlist and each show will be presented by myself in regular Rhythm Inc fashion running down artists, releases and related info. The flavour of our new BLN.FM shows is slightly more dancefloor than our regular shows here (aside from RIRS) so expect plenty of delicious dance related musical treats over the next twelve months.

Each monthly goes out on the first Tuesday of the month live on BLN.FM from 7PM CET (which is GMT+1, so please check your local airtime). You can stream it from BLN.FM and each show is archived both on their site and here where we will podcast them a week or so after the air date (we’re bit late this month I know).

This first show was curated by Raid System featuring one hour of their favourite dancefloor riddims of the second half of 2011. As always XLII and Broken Haze take in turn to mix 4/5 tracks each. You can download and/or stream the show below as well as view full tracklist. Don’t forget to subscribe to our iTunes/RSS feeds in order to receive all shows automatically.

Thanks once more to BLN.FM for having us and enjoy this first show!

We start the year in fine style with a guest mix by Olivier Daysoul – which we’re told is his first ever podcast apparently – in celebration of the latest Citinite release, the Fast Life EP by Drive Me Home, on which Olivier features in his unmistakable vocal style.

Regular listeners should be familiar with Citinite. They’ve curated two mixes for us before including the popular Spoek Mathambo one last year, and for those of you who aren’t yet acquainted with the label you can start by hitting up their site and feasting on the back catalogue.

Citinite 018 is Drive Me Home’s first release for Citinite following from output on Big Dada most notably and comes complete with featurings by Olivier Daysoul, Spoek Mathambo and remixes from Rhythm Inc favourites Computer Jay and Machinedrum. The ‘official’ blurb follows:

Drive Me Home, based in Dalston, London, has been making music since 2004, and in 2007 produced a hip hop album for the respected label, Big Dada. Following that he evolved and refined his sound and started the production outfit BBQ, releasing the well received mixtape ‘BBQ Season 2010′. It was on the strength of this hybrid of hip hop, R‘n’B and soul that Citinite offered to release a record and provide an
outlet for his new Drive Me Home project.

With a cross-pollination of production influences, ranging not just from masters like Jam & Lewis and Timbaland, but also from indie and post punk records, Drive Me Home’s aim is to let love songs work convincingly on the dancefloor during a time when most club music is solely about rhythm.

You’ll find all the necessary purchase and preview links on the Citinite release page. Unsurprisingly we’re fans but don’t take our word for it, see equally positive reviews and accolades from the likes of The Wire, DJ Magazine and more. We’ll be airing music from the EP on this month’s show as well.

As for the mix it really is the best way to start the year, 30 minutes of smooth and eclectic selections from Olivier Daysoul – no tracklist, just the sweet sweet music from Brazilian grooves to hip hop jams and more.

Should you also need to familiarise yourself with Olivier’s work, check out his recent release alongside Krystal Klear on Eglo Records which we also highly recommend. Olivier’s pictures above was taken by Oddissee.

As always download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feed to receive the shows directly.

Much love to Manny at Citinite and Olivier. Enjoy!

And so here we are on the last day of the year. Before we leave you to enter 2012 and what could well be the end of times if a certain prophecy is to be believed, our good friends over at FoF Music have one more parting musical gift to share with us all. It’s the last guest mix of the year and the latest instalment in their Young Adults series, prefacing the label of the same name.

As with the previous Young Adults mix we aired a few months back it’s put together by Lazy Brow and Deep Body, mastered by Salva and features an accompanying photo by Oliver Kish. And here’s some words from the pair:

The ball has dropped. The bars have closed. A thick layer of dewy fog rests heavy on the hard cityscape. Let’s take a trip through the deep bowels of the night – back alleys, speakeasies, redlight specials and bittersweet comedowns. Your trusty Young Adults guides, Deep Body and Lazy Brow, conjure up the finest nether hour fire starters to keep pulses high and footwork fancy when it matters most.

Happy New Year y’all.

So without further ado I’ll leave you in the capable hands of Young Adults and wish you a very happy new year from all of us here at Rhythm Incursions. All the best for 2012 and see you on the other side!

As always you can download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feed to get the shows directly to your computer.

And so we reach the end of the year and the obligatory retrospective edition. This year we’ve opted for a slightly different format, bringing together our three regular shows – RIPL, RIRS and Rhythm Incursions – into one bumper 3h edition that looks back at our favourite music from 2011. With each of us selecting one hour of music, this end of year show features primarily music and tracks which we’ve previously aired as well as a few additions culled from releases and/or artists we’ve supported this year.

We start with the Rhythm Incursions mix presented by Laurent which features a mini feature on the label of the year which is Keysound Recordings, the London label headed by Blackdown. Despite having had a fairly quiet year in comparison to other labels, Keysound’s put out three outstanding albums from Damu, LV & Joshua Idehen and Sully, as well as a handful of 12″s that have all been featured on previous shows and been staples of many sets. As the adage goes quality not quantity and while it’s true that this has actually been a busy year for the label we feel that they really deserve the accolade. Alongside Keysound, the mix features regulars from the past year as well as our favourite releases including Om Unit, Shabazz Palaces, Slugabed, EAN, Kode 9, Yosi Horikawa (with his track from the Nihon Kizuna compilation), NastyNasty, Mark Pritchard under both his solo and Africa Hitech aliases, Machinedrum, Sepalcure and 1000Names.

Primus Luta meanwhile also showcases his favourites – many recognisable from his own 2011 shows – in his mix. A straight up one hour mix with no talking it features some of this year’s best releases from both the electronic and rap world with the likes of 2562, Busdriver, Kendrick Lamar, Blk.Adonis, Welder, Shigeto, Lorn, Siriusmo, Madlib and Dibiase, DRC Music alongside Om Unit, Sepalcure and Sully who all make additional appearances.

And as for Raid System they opted to do another top 20 countdown of their favourite tracks of the year, though this time it isn’t live. Their mix starts with a short run down of our Nihon Kizuna release as well as Broken Haze’s joint EP with B.Bravo before getting into their top 20 for the year featuring many of the artists and labels they’ve been supporting including Joker, Nino, Rustie, Hudson Mohawke, Funkystepz, Zdot, Bobby Tank, Toddska, Starkey, Daniel Haaksman, Knight Riderz, S-Type, Munchi and more.

So there you have it, 2011 the year that was. As always a big thank you to all our listeners and fans, all the labels and artists and a special thanks to everyone who has kindly donated via the Nihon Kizuna compilation we put together while in Japan in March this year. We’ll see you in 2012 with the first show of the year our new BLN.FM syndication, the first of which is curated by Raid System. It will air live on the first tuesday of each month before being podcasted both here and on the BLN.FM site. Before that though there’s one more guest mix, part of our Friends of Friends mix series dropping on New Year’s Eve – it’s a surprise one so be sure not to miss.

You can download and/or stream the show below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feeds to get every show automatically to your computer.

Enjoy and happy new year!

It’s not been a particularly good year in terms of people passing away, the latest tragic addition to which has been the news that J-1 aka The Deer recently died in a car crash in Sweden.

While most people might know him for his recent work as part of Dam Funk’s Master Blazter band – in which he played drums – I remember J-1 from the scratch days. He was one of the first drummers, alongside Gio from Gunkhole, to perform with scratch bands including close friends of ours Four One Funk (Teeko et al) and Mike Boo. In fact I have somewhere a recording of a show they did in 07 I think which Mike had sent me and which I’ll try and hunt down to see if we can maybe put it out to raise more awareness. Point being he was an incredibly talented guy and has left way too young, in tragic circumstances.

What’s worst, is that his family is currently unable to ship his body back to the US and so there has been a round of fundraising events in the US to help raise money for the family, and there will be one such event in London next Thursday, December 22nd, with the likes of Illum Sphere, Alex Nut, Fatima and more all playing. The event is being held at CAMP in Old Street. Suggested donations on the door are £5 – expect good music, good people and good memories to celebrate the life of a talented musician.

Facebook event page is HERE. Should you find yourself unable to attend please consider donating any amount directly to the Coleman family via this page, the only official place online in which to make sure your money goes to the family.

See you there!

Our last guest mix of the year comes courtesy of Repeat Pattern, all the way from Japan once more via the United States.

I first met Repeat Pattern earlier this year when I was back in Tokyo. I’d seen his name and heard his music before and assumed he was another Japanese producer, so it was a bit of a surprise to realise he was in fact a US ex-pat living in the north of the country! He was doing a live show as part of the Mo’ Fun night I played at, and after seeing his pretty dope live appearance we got chatting and eventually he wound up being the guy who put us in touch with Jealousguy (who did a very dope live set for us last month) as well as promising a mix which he delivered just in time for the end of year.

His submission definitely didn’t disappoint, in fine Rhythm Incursions style he’s given us a beautiful musical ride that’s perfect to end the year with, taking in everything from classics to beats and personal favourites. So the likes of Galt McDermot, Bobby Womack, Broadcast and Weldone Irvine rub shoulders with PUDGE, MRR ADM, Charles Trees, Mount Kimbie and more.

For more on the man hit up the Soundcloud page where you’ll find a mixture of old and new productions, including his collaboration with Kan Sano, and you can also check the Love Exposure album he collaborated on and which is free to download. There’s more coming in the new year via the Cascade Record label including a mixtape of old beat to raise money as he lost his HD and all data on it recently! That should be out before the end of the year so keep it peeled on his virtual hangouts. You can also find music from the man on a variety of compilations to raise money for Japan’s earthquake victims, all info and links on Soundcloud. Oh and lastly you can check some music from the man in our previous shows too.

As always you can stream and/or download below or simply subscribe to our iTunes/RSS feeds and never miss a show. Enjoy!
