[MP3] Take – Incredibright

We’ve been waiting for this one for a long time here at Rhythm Inc towers. Take aka Sweatson Klank aka one of the pivotal pioneers of the L.A beat scene is releasing his second full length album next month. Dropping April 20th on the Alpha Pup label, ‘Only Mountain’ comes nearly 3 years after ‘Earthtones and Concrete’, an album I was introduced to by Om Unit and Waxfactor and which totally changed the way I viewed beats and eletronic minded hip hop. Which explains the aforementioned anticipation for this new album.

Coming on the heels of a series of EPs and remixes for labels like Eat Concrete, Friends of Friends and All City Records, ‘Always Mountain’ is a departure from the last album much more inline with his recent ’sound’ which started appearing on his Eat Concrete EP back in 08 and then further refined in his Architeq remix of ‘Sleeping Bear Laments’ or the three tracks he recently dropped on All City’s L.A 10×10 series. While different from his earlier work the music retains the same quality and composition that made it stand out from the rest in the past. This isn’t more beats by numbers, this is some incredible music by one of the unsung pioneers of the genre (if you will).

The lovely people at Alpha Pup are letting us post a taster from the album for you to stream/download in the shape of ‘Incredibright’. Also below some official words from the label:

Alpha Pup is proud to present Only Mountain, the newest release from L.A.-based beat producer Take. His most powerful and fully realized work to date, Only Mountain serves as a complete affirmation of Take’s ten prolific years in music production.

A dense and groundbreaking work, Take’s Only Mountain stands as a staggering collection of gorgeously brilliant melodies and deep subharmonic bass. Truly future music towards a brighter end.

Full tracklist for the album is below as is the download and stream links for ‘Incredibright’. Album drops April 20 on Alpha Pup label, digital and I think they have vinyl coming soon too. Here more from Take in our previous shows, browse all shows featuring him here.

Jammer – Better Than (Lorn remix)

Anyone who listens to the shows regularly or has been following us for a while now should know Lorn. Our story with the Milwaukee native goes waaaaaay back to the scratch internet boards days when he was making some of the most amazing, mind-bending loops for people to cut over. A few years ago he started reappearing on the radar with his own productions, and in 2009 his first proper debut album was snapped up by Brainfeeder for release (if you don’t count the extensive amount of music he’s put out for free before that, or the break record he released).

All of which only added to the surprise I got a few weeks back when Big Dada hit me up to say that Lorn had remixed the new Jammer single that the label will be releasing next week. Yes that’s right – Lorn from Milwaukee remixing Jammer, the grime legend from London. It doesn’t get better than this, literally.

‘Better Than’ is out March 15 on Big Dada, with original, instrumental and aforementioned Lorn remix which you can download/stream below courtesy of the lovely Dada people. Described as a dubstep remix elsewhere, I can see why people would say that, though personally Lorn’s take doesn’t particularly make me think of any specific genre, it’s just an incredibly heavy, crushing flip of the original, taking Jammer’s vocals into the territories Lorn is most comfortable in – dark, vicious territories with towering drums and bass lines.

If you want more from the man be sure to check his myspace, as well as the mini feature we did on him last year. And stay tuned for more previews of his album, ‘Nothing Else’ which will drop on Brainfeeder in June 2010. For now though enjoy this beauty of a remix.

Tranqill x Free The Robots x Take x Matthewdavid

I got rather swamped in quality freebies in the last 24 hours, leading me to do the only logical thing – combine them all into one easy to digest summary. From London to L.A via Dublin welcome into your life fresh new, and free, music from 4 rather talented artists and 3 rather dope labels.

First up is London’s Tranqill, whose ‘Hidden Treasures’ EP has been a very long time coming and will finally see the light of day in a few weeks thanks to the always on point One Handed Music label. The first single if you will from the EP is Deadly Wintaz a video for which you can view above before heading over to his bandcamp to download the track for free and the whole EP for £2. Yes you read that correctly – £2 buys you what is quite possibly the nicest ‘uk hip hop’ release in a while (and we used that tag likely, but you all know what we mean).

As OHM put it:

Tranqill makes the kind of raw, spontaneous, thrilling rap music that made us fall in love with those classic Wu-Tang records.

We couldn’t agree more. I can’t remember the last time I was this hyped about a rap release from London. Check the bandcamp preview below for more.
<a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/tranqill.bandcamp.com/album/the-hidden-treasures-ep');" href="http://tranqill.bandcamp.com/album/the-hidden-treasures-ep">Chips &amp; Cheese by Tranqill</a>

Next up is L.A’s Alpha Pup who are about to release the also long-awaited debut album from Free The Robots. It drops end of March but in the meantime the label has kindly given a track for free to download via their newly relaunched website. We got the album last night and am very excited to give it a proper listen – expect some previews in our March show for sure and more good things from Free The Robots, one of the many L.A producers who hasn’t really yet ‘blown’ up if you will despite some already stand-out productions and work for labels like Equinox in Europe.

Download Free The Robot’s ‘Orion’s Belt Buckle’ and be sure to check the newly relaunched Alpha Pup site and go cop their recent Nocando album – first essential rap album of the year for me.

Last up is Dublin’s All City Records who are about to drop the second of their 10×10 series, which we already mentioned last month. The second in this series of 10″ records from L.A based producers teams up Matthewdavid with Take aka Sweatson Klank, a favourite of ours and someone we’ve had the chance to meet and hang with last summer which was a real eye-opener as far as learning about the history of the beat scene in L.A and its progression through the last decade.

Splitting this 10″ the guys do an amazing work further showing the versatility of the current L.A underground. We’re very happy to be able to give you a taste in the form of two tracks, one from each artist. See below for stream and download links.

Look out for more from All City including a Musinah 7″ with production by Flying Lotus and 00 Genesis.

For now though get stuck into all this free goodness and be sure to go and support the artists and labels if you like what you hear. Look out for more previews from all these guys in the March show. Much thanks and love to the labels and artists.

Durlin Hurt – Him Jenson [free album]

The lovely people at Alpha Pup and Leaving Records (Matthewdavid’s new label) hit us up with promos of their new releases recently and also a link to a beat tape by a guy called Durlin Lurt. This beat tape, called ‘Him Jenson’ (no points for figuring out the joke there), is being given away for free by Leaving Records. Very little information is available beyond some blurb from the label…

The 2008 cult classic from Durlin Lurt now has a home. Sounding more fun and filthier than ever, the conceptual work spans the alphabet (twenty six tracks, with many familiar guest features) sampling you-know-who through an experimental hip-hop lens that is unique and absurdly organic.

Doing a bit of digging around I couldn’t find much more, but to be honest I’m quite happy to leave the ‘mystery’ as is and instead focus on the music, which is rather nice. A total trip of a beat tape, it’ll leave you fuzzy headed and smiling, as well as potentially singing random bits from Sesame Street.

The tape features a few guests including Rhythm Inc favourites like Dak and Dibiase.

So without further ado I recommend you get stuck into this excellent freebie and take a little trip for an hour or so.

Deekline & Wizard – Luv 4 Music (1000names remix)

February 3, 2010 by Laurent

If you’re a regular listener you’ll have noticed that as part of our 2010 Watchlist on the January show we featured a new label based in Belgrade, Serbia called Svetlana Industries. Well the lovely people behind the label are now officially launching it with a present in the form of two previously unavailable remixes of Deekline & Wizard by 1000names and Filtercutter, two of the artists on the label’s roster. See below for links to download/stream audio.

The story behind how Svetlana came to be isn’t your average story… or so it would seem:

Svetlana comes from somewhere far away.

She successfully navigated the cross-dimensional transition into this galaxy, docked and began her work.

She began by assembling a local team to implement her scheme. Then, unaware of the existence of the concept of borders, races, peoples and nations, probes were extended into the global neural network and the job began of explaining the grand purpose and direction to the members of humanity whose consciousness seemed to be approaching levels sufficient for trans-galactic communication.

2010 sees the start of the next stage in Svetlana’s terrestrial plan: disseminating the music on vinyl records. Vinyl is actually a medium known for its resistance to the rigours of space travel and therefore highly appropriate to her project. A record floating in the inky void can survive for millennia and is regularly exchangeable for food or oxygen when needed.

Who is she? Why is she here? These things are still unclear.

On a more serious note, one of the nicest things about the label for me is its internationalism – based in Belgrade, artists across Europe, designer in Sweden, visual artist in NYC. It’s a truly global affair that makes use of the internet to help connect the dots, people and love of music.

As for the previously mentioned freebie you can grab FLAC versions on their bandcamp page, or alternatively download 192 mp3s from their soundcloud. We’ve also included the 1000names remix at the bottom of this post where it can be downloaded and/or streamed.

Look out for much more from them this year including an excellent EP from Teebs & Jackhigh called ‘Tropics’ (which we featured on the January show), a 12″ from Filtercutter, which I think is already out and releases from 8Bitch and other upcoming producers.

In the meantime enjoy their welcoming present.

Mochipet – Marshall Bass Stacks (Kraddy remix)

February 2, 2010 by Laurent

Our good friend and favourite purple-dragon-suit wearing bass fiend Mochipet has just released volume 1 of a series of remixes from his recent ‘Master P On Atari’ album. To celebrate the occasion he’s giving away one of the remixes, from ex-Glitch Mob member Kraddy, which you can grab and/or stream below.

Here’s some details on the new release:

The new remix project from Mochipet and a bunch of superstar friends, Master P on Atari Transformed Vol. 1, is a futuristic in-your-face robot sizzle meltdown. Out now on Daly City Records, the album travels beyond bassy and spacey with plenty of glitched-out lasers, but remains strictly locked to the dance floor. Running the gamut between glitch, hip hop, electro, and just about everything else, the remixes by such luminaries as Kraddy, Sub Swara and Restiform Bodies are decidedly Mochipet-esque, staying true to the sound of the original Master P on Atari album with the subtle addition of each artist’s unique flavor. As a bonus, the album also includes exclusive remix elements for producers and DJ’s.

So not only do you get 11 banging remixes sure to set any dancefloor worth its money on fire, you can also get your remix own with the parts. It’s a giant, lazery party and we’re all invited.

Here’s a run down of the vol1 tracklist which includes some of our other good bass-addicted friends like Matt B and Memory9:
1. John Coltrane on Atari (Daniel Day Trio Remix)
2. Marshall Bass Smacks (Kraddy Remix)
3. Robot Dunk Juice (ill.gates vs. Little John Remix)
4. Master P on Obe One Kenobi (Matt B Remix)
5. Master P on Versace (Memory 9 Remix)
6. Vermin Bass Stacks (Vinyl Blight Remix)
7. Anticon on Atari (Restiform Bodies Remix)
8. Robot Basslab Juice (S.P.E.C.T.R.E. Remix)
9. Alien Crunk Dub (Audiovoid Remix)
10. Complex Cumbia Dub (Sub Swara Remix)
11. Master P on Chords and Coffee (Deceptikon Remix)
+ remix parts

You can purchase the LP over at the Daly City Records site, get some previews on myspace and as previously mentioned grabbed the Kraddy remix for free below, in glorious 320 quality.

Look out for vol 2 coming later this year featuring Jacob London, The Flying Skulls, Preshish Moments, Splatinum, Encarti, Layerz, and more. Oh yeah and there’s also a brand new video for ‘Robo Crunk Juice’, off the original album, which you can check below.

Dibiase & PUDGE – Smoke It Over

We’ve been waiting for this one for a while now. The excellent Dublin-based All City Records are starting a new series of vinyl releases for 2010, following from their acclaimed 7×7 series back in 08 which saw them release 7 (well actually 8 as they did an extra one in 09) 7″s featuring tracks from producers that had been bubbling under and a few of which went on to receive greater acclaim and fame in 09. These included Hudson Mohawke, Onra, Mike Slott and Fulgeance to name a few.

For 2010 the label returns with a similar concept this time the 10×10 LA Series. The concept couldn’t be simpler: 10 10″s from LA producers featuring one producer on each side and artwork from the mighty B+ of Mochilla fame. Simple concept maybe but packing an almighty punch especially when it’s that well executed.

First up are two producers who we’ve been following keenly for a while – Dibiase and PUDGE. I saw PUDGE in November when he played the Ramp party in London, and must admit his set was a pleasure. I’d known of him but not that well and the live set was a perfect introduction. As for Dibiase, he’s someone whose music, or more accurately beats, I’ve been hunting over the last year ever since I discovered him on a video with Ras G back in 08. As Take, another LA producer, put it when I saw him in the summer, Dibiase is a sort of unsung producing hero on the LA beat scene, a local Dilla with an incredible knack for the most catchy headnodders.

To celebrate the launch of the series, All City have given out one track from the first 10″ entitled ‘Smoke It Over’ and featuring both producers. See below for download link and stream.

Here’s some blurb from the press release regarding both and also tracklist for the first 10″.

Dibiase – Representing HollyWatts in South LA, Dibiase has been making a name for himself beneath the surface over the last few years. Now coming overground he’s recently dropped 45s on Detroits OTW label plus Fat City.
P.U.D.G.E – Originally from Jamaica, Queens now residing in L.A producer and MC P.U.D.G.E has released on Ramp and most recently on the Beat Dimensions 2 LP.

Alongside this new series All City are also starting 2010 with a 7″ from Om Unit, who regular listeners of the show will know by now. The release, Lavender b/w Lightgrids, has been on rotation in our shows for a few months now as we’ve been lucky enough to get the early heads up on it and we’re very happy to see it finally come out. For my money, Lightgrids is the joint and it’s been getting some serious support from the likes of Martyn, Benji B and Mark Pritchard as well as being featured on XLR8R’s website.

The 7″ is out now, and you can buy it here. Comes with some beautiful artwork too.

Lastly Om Unit has also done a 30 min mix of All City material past, present and future. It’s the perfect addition to both releases and a great way to catch up with the label’s output, or if you aren’t new to it, reminisce on the good stuff. You can download the mix here.
