<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

Ken One is family. One of Japan’s best scratch DJs, he’s been down with us since day one when Turntable Radio was the focus and when we moved to Japan he hooked us up with contacts and more. He’s also part of the Raid System crew, so he’s even more family. All of which is to say that when he sends us stuff it’s kinda like a no-brainer. Hell he’s already been featured round these parts a few times.

This latest mix follows from the previous Skratch Evolution instalments as it was in fact the promo mix Ken put together for Skratch Evolution 4 – the latest chapter of his ongoing live event in Tokyo that brings together the best scratchers and beat makers for a day of musical fun. Short but sweet it covers tons of our favourite classics with jams from Jeru, Hashim, Ricci Rucker and Samiyam. 30 mins of hip hop fun laced with world class cuts to get you moving.

You can keep up with Ken One over at his blog and look out for shows in and around Tokyo over the coming year as always.

We round off the first month of the year with a bit of junglism – a perfect remedy for the current cold weather afflicting our part of the world. Tim Reaper is a young jungle/dnb producer I was introduced to by the always on it Joe Muggs. Since then his Soundcloud page has been a regular stopping point, especially when I need an amen fix (check his Amen Warfare mini mix for some chopped up bliss).

As always one thing leading to another we got chatting on Twitter and we invited Tim to deliver a mix for the show, which he did in the shape of this short but intensely sweet mini mix. With only two years’ producing experience under his belt, Tim’s already showing the kind of flair that bodes well for the future, especially in his ability to reconcile the sounds and vibes of Jungle’s golden era with its various modern incarnations and evolutions. He’s had releases on Trace’s DSCI4 label and forthcoming ones on Inperspective among others – there’s plenty forthcoming he tells us, so be sure to keep an eye out.

Here’s what Tim had to say about the mix itself:

Now, about this mix, it was done in my sequencer because I don’t own any sort of hardware that I could use for DJing, but I still get sent tracks from fellow producers and I buy tracks that I like that get released, so rather than just sitting on the tracks, doing nothing with them, I thought that it would be good to present them in a way.

After doing a minimix to promote a release I was working on, I got into the habit of making these types of minimixes, which I think are a great way to present music in a short but digestible manner, so I did this for you guys, kept it short as it’s only 20 minutes long, but I managed to fit in some great tracks, signed and unsigned from some of my top producers about right now.

So there you have, the perfect jump off point for the start of the week!

For more on Tim Reaper be sure to check his Soundcloud page where you’ll find previews of most of his work and more mini mixes to satisfy additional Junglist cravings you may have. As always a big thanks to Tim for taking the time to do this.

You can download and/or stream the mix below, or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes feed and get all shows delivered to you instantly.

We start the year in fine style with a guest mix by Olivier Daysoul – which we’re told is his first ever podcast apparently – in celebration of the latest Citinite release, the Fast Life EP by Drive Me Home, on which Olivier features in his unmistakable vocal style.

Regular listeners should be familiar with Citinite. They’ve curated two mixes for us before including the popular Spoek Mathambo one last year, and for those of you who aren’t yet acquainted with the label you can start by hitting up their site and feasting on the back catalogue.

Citinite 018 is Drive Me Home’s first release for Citinite following from output on Big Dada most notably and comes complete with featurings by Olivier Daysoul, Spoek Mathambo and remixes from Rhythm Inc favourites Computer Jay and Machinedrum. The ‘official’ blurb follows:

Drive Me Home, based in Dalston, London, has been making music since 2004, and in 2007 produced a hip hop album for the respected label, Big Dada. Following that he evolved and refined his sound and started the production outfit BBQ, releasing the well received mixtape ‘BBQ Season 2010′. It was on the strength of this hybrid of hip hop, R‘n’B and soul that Citinite offered to release a record and provide an
outlet for his new Drive Me Home project.

With a cross-pollination of production influences, ranging not just from masters like Jam & Lewis and Timbaland, but also from indie and post punk records, Drive Me Home’s aim is to let love songs work convincingly on the dancefloor during a time when most club music is solely about rhythm.

You’ll find all the necessary purchase and preview links on the Citinite release page. Unsurprisingly we’re fans but don’t take our word for it, see equally positive reviews and accolades from the likes of The Wire, DJ Magazine and more. We’ll be airing music from the EP on this month’s show as well.

As for the mix it really is the best way to start the year, 30 minutes of smooth and eclectic selections from Olivier Daysoul – no tracklist, just the sweet sweet music from Brazilian grooves to hip hop jams and more.

Should you also need to familiarise yourself with Olivier’s work, check out his recent release alongside Krystal Klear on Eglo Records which we also highly recommend. Olivier’s pictures above was taken by Oddissee.

As always download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feed to receive the shows directly.

Much love to Manny at Citinite and Olivier. Enjoy!

Our last guest mix of the year comes courtesy of Repeat Pattern, all the way from Japan once more via the United States.

I first met Repeat Pattern earlier this year when I was back in Tokyo. I’d seen his name and heard his music before and assumed he was another Japanese producer, so it was a bit of a surprise to realise he was in fact a US ex-pat living in the north of the country! He was doing a live show as part of the Mo’ Fun night I played at, and after seeing his pretty dope live appearance we got chatting and eventually he wound up being the guy who put us in touch with Jealousguy (who did a very dope live set for us last month) as well as promising a mix which he delivered just in time for the end of year.

His submission definitely didn’t disappoint, in fine Rhythm Incursions style he’s given us a beautiful musical ride that’s perfect to end the year with, taking in everything from classics to beats and personal favourites. So the likes of Galt McDermot, Bobby Womack, Broadcast and Weldone Irvine rub shoulders with PUDGE, MRR ADM, Charles Trees, Mount Kimbie and more.

For more on the man hit up the Soundcloud page where you’ll find a mixture of old and new productions, including his collaboration with Kan Sano, and you can also check the Love Exposure album he collaborated on and which is free to download. There’s more coming in the new year via the Cascade Record label including a mixtape of old beat to raise money as he lost his HD and all data on it recently! That should be out before the end of the year so keep it peeled on his virtual hangouts. You can also find music from the man on a variety of compilations to raise money for Japan’s earthquake victims, all info and links on Soundcloud. Oh and lastly you can check some music from the man in our previous shows too.

As always you can stream and/or download below or simply subscribe to our iTunes/RSS feeds and never miss a show. Enjoy!

This one has been a long time coming. The infamous Jay Scarlett – the man behind the Beat Dimensions compilation, Amp Soul Generation and many more projects – steps up with a guest show featuring none other than eLan, the west coast producer recently signed to Modeselektor’s Monkeytown label (and who featured in our Raid System guest series a few months ago).

Jay and I had been talking about doing some mix swap for a while and we’ve finally managed to lock it down with Jay delivering this ASG Radio special for us and Laurent returning the favour with a guest mix for ASG which will go live at some point today as well [edit: it's now live and streamable right here].

For this show Jay linked up with eLan, who’s been touring Europe, and sat the man down for a chat and selection featuring new tracks, exclusives from the west coast and more. We’ve got new music from eLan, Mike Gao, Bobby Tank, Anneka, and DJ Pound as well as classics from the likes of Dabrye and more.

For more on Jay and his musical offerings check the Amp Soul Generation blog where the man regularly posts a stream of goodies, freebies and the likes. For more on eLan peep the soundcloud where you’ll find details of his latest release and more.

As always you can stream and/or download the show below or subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feeds and get all the shows directly to your inbox.

This week’s guest mix comes all the way from the northern island of Hokkaido in Japan courtesy of jealousguy, a female producer who was brought to our attention in the last few months after her live appearance at the Mo’ Fun party in Tokyo alongside Daisuke Tanabe in September. It was shortly after this show that Repeat Pattern got in touch saying how impressed he and Daisuke had been by her performance and one thing leading to another we got in touch with Masami as she is legally known and asked her to deliver a guest mix, for which she put together a live set recorded at home exclusively for Rhythm Incursions!

With a couple of releases under her belt – the latest of which, Hydration, can be purchased on iTunes – jealousguy has been primarily active in her native Japan though we’re hoping her recent appearances there alongside the likes of Daisuke Tanabe and Gold Panda will help to raise her international profile. And this live mix she put together for us I’m sure will convince a few more people of her talent.

Using a fairly simple set up involving her laptop, a MIDI controller and a trusted SP-404, she manages to bring together the most disparate and unlikely sounds and samples while keeping a funk and swing that reminds me of why I first fell in love with many of the modern Japanese producers we’ve championed on Rhythm Inc over the years. There is something distinctively Japanese and unique in her approach, even if at times you can tell there is a degree of emulating what she’s hearing from Western producers and labels. The set also features tracks from her latest release.

As always though we’ll let you be the judges of that and if you like what you hear be sure to check out her blog which includes details of her releases as well as live appearances and sets – there’s a Mixcloud of her Mo’ Fun appearance here on a similar tip to the set she’s put together for us.

Big thanks go to Repeat Pattern for the hook up and Masami for her time and effort. As always you can download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feed to receive all the shows directly to your inbox.

Enjoy!

First up this month on the guest front is French producer and dub fanatic Moresounds who delivered his Light Up Your Tree mix a few weeks back to much enjoyment and good vibes around Rhythm Inc towers.

We discovered Moresounds via Om Unit sometime last year, and it was his more modern take on the classic dub sound that really grabbed our ear – especially tracks like Weeda and Cannabis (no points for guessing the theme there) which feature in both original and rework versions on this mix. He’s had a few releases in the last year, namely the SNAFU EP on Car Crash Set last year and a dub of Om Unit vs Kromestar on the newly minted Cosmic Bridge label which Om Unit launched earlier in the year.

For this mix he delivered in the finest rub a dub style, a mix that actually brings fond memories of Trick’s Dang In Dub series (which you can still check out here by the way if you haven’t). It’s definitely the perfect way to start your week with a smile on the face and a skank in the step. For more on the man himself, hit up his FB official page and look out for more release news soon.

As always you can stream and/or download the show below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feeds and never miss a show.

So light up your tree and skank away the monday blues!

As you know we like to bring you guest mixes from people we think are dope, and with whom we have some sort of relationship. In the ever expanding world of online music, filtering and quality is as important as ever and while we may not be a world famous force to contend with we like to think we do what we do well and that’s why we’ve gained a faithful and growing amount of listeners over the years who know we bring the good shit to the table.

This new guest mix from Valance Drakes is no exception. Valance used to go by the name MusSck, a name you might remember if you’re a regular listener/follower – he was featured on the Nihon Kizuna compilation I helped put together earlier this year and he released on Mochipet’s Daly City label a few years back. Two weeks ago I went to do a guest lecture at London’s CM music academy to a group of young students as part of a module on the Roots of Contemporary Music. The lecture was based on the work and mix I’ve done around the Boom Bap Continuum a few years back. The biggest surprise on the day though was to find a guy in the audience who was really up on a lot of what I was discussing, the artists and history of the new school of hip hop producers. We got chatting at the end of the lecture and I asked him to send me some of his music. My surprise upon realising he was MusSck and I’d released his track earlier that year was pretty big. We laughed about it and I asked him to do a guest mix as I felt that was really the next logical step considering how we’d ended up meeting in such strange circumstances.

And the man delivered in fine style with a 40 mins mix of his own productions, all of which are unreleased material that’s mostly never been heard before! As such there is no tracklist for it, though don’t let that detract you from the enjoyment of what is a great sonic journey into the mind of a talented young producer who twists and turns the so called glitch style into his own and makes it sound just as interesting and fresh as a certain young producer by the name of edIT did years ago.

For more on Valance Drakes you can check his Soundcloud and Facebook pages. He’s already had releases on Daly City as I mentioned and forthcoming ones will be dropping on Schematic, Bedroom Research and Alkalinear Recordings.

Download link and stream option below as always and be sure to subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feeds if you never want to miss a show and get them all directly to your computer when they come out.

Massive thanks to Valance for coming through with this. Enjoy!

Based in Milan, I first discovered the man when he lived in London through our mutual friends at Open Sauce. We became friends and collaborated briefly last year for the Original Cultures project. A classically trained musician who’s as comfortable on an instrument as he is behind a screen with a copy of Max/MSP running, Memory9′s music has one foot firmly on the dancefloor and the other firmly in your mindspace. His most recent work saw him team up with none other than Juakali for a single on Skanky Panky records that received praise from far and wide. He’s also been busy helping to bring some fresh new sounds and artists to Milan – a city not always known for its musical forward thinking let’s face it.

All of which makes his guest mix for Rhythm Incursions all that more special. And that’s before we even get into the music on the mix itself which includes plenty of Rhythm Inc favourites mixed up in a way that’ll leave you slightly sweaty and wanting for more.

For more info on the man, his music and his live appearances peep the website where you’ll find everything in one handy place.

Much love to Memory9 for finally dropping by with acid drive by. Crank the volume and enjoy!

A few weeks ago Sven Swift, one half of the masterminds behind the Error Broadcast label, got in touch about airing a mix compiling music he’s been airing on his new show on DEAD Radio called Shape of Rap. And while his proposed submission of a ‘megamix’ covering the first 5 shows he’s aired was a little daunting – clocking in at 5h – we thought it’d be a perfect addition to our guest mixes not least because it very much embodies Rhythm Inc’s original ethos of ‘picking up where hip hop stops’ and EB’s own approach to 21st century hip hop.

So what follows is a 5 hour musical extravaganza of rather epic proportion titled ‘The Complete Shape of Rap’ and covering a range of artists, labels and styles many of which are dear to us and many of which we hope you’ll also come to enjoy and discover if you’ve not yet. A big portion of the artists on there have released on the label in one way or another, so it’s also a perfect showcase of their offerings. And should you find yourself enticed by Sven’s mix then head over to their site where you’ll find the entire back catalogue available digitally as well as some releases still in physical format (I think).

You can catch Sven’s show on Dead Radio every month, check the website for more details. And of course look out for more releases on the label with some interesting ones coming up we can’t tell you about just yet.

Download link and stream embed are below as well as the rather long tracklist! Many thanks to Sven and Dead Radio and enjoy!
