Next up on our guest mix schedule this month is one of Russia’s latest beatmakers to make noise, OL. I first caught wind of him back in January 2009 when a Russian friend of mine (big up Katia!) passed me a beat tape he’d made. There were a few things on there that caught my attention and in the time since other Russian beatmakers started to come out of the country and onto the global radar, including Pixelord and DZA.

Fast forward to this summer and OL hit us up with another bunch of demos/beats and news of forthcoming releases which felt like the perfect excuse to ask him for a guest mix. He duly provided with a short selection of his own productions alongside beats and productions from Madlib, Knowledge, Shlohmo, Dibiase and Devonwho. A perfect way to kick start Monday with a headnod in your step.

The first release lined up for him this year is on the Error Broadcast label where he’ll be dropping a solo EP titled ‘Random Phrase’ as well as a contribution to the label’s Russian beatmakers compilation, Fly Russia. The compilation drops in 2 weeks, and will be free from the label’s website and available in high quality for a small fee. The EP’s release date is 27 September.

For more on the man hit up his myspace or the EB label website. Big thanks to OL for the time and mix as well as Katia for the original hook up!

We start September in fine style with an exclusive guest mix from one of our presenters, Primus Luta under the new guise of his Concréte Sound System (CSS) live setup. The mix is a retrospective/homage to Autechre and the 90′s IDM scene (regardless of what you make of the name). It’s quite a superb mix that deserves your full attention especially if, like me, your knowledge of Autechre’s back catalogue isn’t extensive.

Here’s what Primus had to say on the subject:

In the coming years the importance of the 90′s era IDM will become more and more relevant to the music of today. Then like now were a bunch of artists unaffected by trends and fashions, freed from the typical concepts of musical success to work within the realm of technology based music in means few before had ever explored. Today many of the sounds which they uncovered have become the catalyst for genres, trends and fashions. Making it my prediction that as those genres, trends and fashions consume themselves it will be the aesthetic as much as the music which proves to be the legacy of the era.

Picking out one artist to represent any era of music is fundamentally impossible to do objectively. So make no mistake that the choice of Autechre here is quite the subjective one. Perhaps the most influential artists upon my own work it was a pleasure going through their massive catalog to pull together this mix. bÆts is a collection which aims to show that the two perhaps better known for their ambient and melodic work can throw down block rocking beats with the rest of them. Of course since we’re talking Autechre nothing is quite straight forward, but be clear it makes for one helluva ride.

This mix also inaugurates my new live set Concréte Sound System (CSS). Like the mix itself you can expect the future of CSS to be breathtakingly relentless.

So there you have it, an hour long ride into the world of Autechre done in a way you’re unlikely to have heard before. As always the mix is available to download and/or stream below or just subscribe via RSS/iTunes and you’ll never miss a show.

Stay tuned for more guest mixes next week from Ol in Russia and SATO in Japan before the regular shows kick in the following week.

The latest installment of our joint mix series with the Friends of Friends label comes from Barcelona based producer My Dry Wet Mess, who’s the latest signing to Daedelus’ Magical Properties label. The young producer has been popping up on everyone’s radars as of late, and made it onto mine a few days ago (late I know) when Om Unit played me his unofficial remix of Actress’ ‘Maze’ – my mind was suitably blown. With this in mind I’m rather chuffed to have the man drop by for our series with a tasty mix.

Here’s what he had to say on the mix…

I made this mixtape with the same attitude of recording a tape for a trip by car back in the days… when I couldn’t wait to be on the road and play my most recent discoveries to my friends (over and over). So it’s mostly songs I’ve been listening to non stop in the last few days plus a couple of tracks I’ve been working on. MDWM

The man obvioulsy has great musical tastes in line with our own considering half the tracklist has also been on loop in my iPod for the last month or so. Alongside Rhythm Inc favourites like Mweslee, Hud Mo, Mount Kimbie, Dorian Concept, Kan Kick and American Men, the man’s own productions stand out most for me – hinting at what’s to come hopefully.

As with previous mixes in this series the photo was also sourced especially for the occasion by Leeor at FoF, and once more it comes courtesy of Oliver Kish. Massive thanks to Leeor and MDWM for this. Stay tuned for the next episode next month!

Our latest guest mix comes from a long time friend of Rhythm Incursions and Turntable Radio, the German producer and DJ B-Ju. I first discovered and met B in the days of Turntable Radio and scratch forums, when he was one of the most unique and interesting cats to come out of Germany around the early-mid 00s. I still remember his sets as part of the now defunct ITF experimental category as some of the best from that era, and it was no surprise to see him appear in recent years as part of the new school of European producers that are taking the whole electronic hip hop/beats aesthetic into their own hands.

He’s had releases on labels such as Equinox, Dirtybird and more recently Error Broadcast following his earlier years as a turntablist (during which he won a bunch of titles in the DMCs and elsewhere), most of which we’ve featured on the show. He’s currently DJing with his partner in crime Soular all around Germany and working on two new EPs. Check out the latest dates on myspace and exclusive tracks and mixes on Soundcloud.

So as you can gather it’s a real pleasure to have the man drop by for a guest mix. For the occasion he sent a 50 minute selection of black plastic that covers the recent experimentations between dubstep/2step and funky house with people like James Blake, Joy Orbison, Four Tet, SBTRKT, Sepalcure and Hypno and more all represented. It’s definitely right up our alley here at Rhythm Inc towers, with many of these artists featured on the show and in rotation in our players.

If you like what you hear be sure to check his links for more and go out there and check his music if you like crunchy, banging beats. Here’s a preview of his latest EP for Error Broadcast:

We return with a guest mix on this fine monday as our monthly shows for August have been pushed to friday. Next up in our ever growing line up of guests is Vangel, a Canadian producer and DJ who I think I first came across via the work we do on Turntable Radio. Details are hazy but for the last couple of years he’s been on our radar with various releases and collaborations, notably his EP for Scientist’s Equinox records (which we aired last year).

Over the last few months we got talking about a guest spot on the show for which the man came up with ‘In My Rumination’ a mix that fits more than perfectly within the Rhythm Inc cannon. Over 50 minutes Vangel takes you everywhere and back, weaving the likes of DJ Shadow, Four Tet, El-P, Prefuse, Caribou, Battles, Koushik, Thom Yorke and more together alongside some of his own productions. The result is a blissfull ride into music perfect to help get over the monday morning blues.

For more on Vangel be sure to check his site where you can find more info and links on all his releases and more.

Update: Vangel just told us he’s currently working on a debut LP entitled Breadth Control and you can get some free and not-free bytes right here http://vangel.bandcamp.com/.

And for now just crank up the volume and enjoy!

I’m very happy to welcome back DJ Pain to the Rhythm Incursions airwaves, in association with our good friends at Mondayjazz.

Regular listeners should be no stranger to Pain, who I believe holds the dubious title of most featured guest mixer by the way and is responsible for such mix gems as ‘Road To Oblivion’ and ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’. You can check all his past offerings here and ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’ here (for some reason it’s not in our archive).

I hooked up with him a few months back when he came through town on a tour of Europe, and in between catching up and talking about life he mentioned a new mix he’d finished last year and which he wanted to get out. It was a no brainer for us, and we managed to also get the guys at Mondayjazz involved after they mentioned they were big fans as well.

So ladies and gentlemen here is the latest DJ Pain mix, Remembering Tomorrow a 70 mins psych rock trip assembled as only the man can with a plethora of spoken samples that weave a story as fascinating as the music. And before anyone asks there is no tracklist.

The show is available to download, and stream, here and on the Mondayjazz site. Remember the best way to get the latest shows is to subscribe to our RSS or iTunes feeds or our newsletter.

For more on Pain check his website and stay tuned for another mix from him in the near future. In the meantime enjoy this musical roadtrip. Much love to Pain for hooking us up and to Mondayjazz for arranging the artwork courtesy of Grape Frogg.

It gives me great pleasure to present as the last guest mix this month an exclusive live set from one of the most fascinating bands I saw when I lived in Japan, Draco. They aren’t your usual band, a combination of traditional instruments and electronic musicians but with a little twist, as with most Japanese things.

I discovered them at the Kaikoo Meets Revolution party (organised by our friends from Pop Group) in Yokohama in April 08 where they were one of the headlining acts in the afternoon. I was already familiar with the electronic half of the band (Numb and Saidrum) and so was really curious to see what this new project was about. The show left me speechless, one of the most fascinating and engrossing experiences during my time there, and since then too. Below is a low quality video of some of that show, to give you a little taste.

Draco are composed of electronic producers Numb and Saidrum, sitar player Kenji Inoue and tabla player Masaki Yoshimi. The former are best known for their work in the techno and house scenes, pioneering albums for the Revirth label and live shows based around the Korg ZERO8 mixer which they helped to R&D, while Kenji is a renowned Japanese sitar player who studied his instrument in India and combines traditional sitar playing with a style that resembles how the Japanese shamisen is played, and Masaki is one of Japan’s best tabla players who also studied in India. Together the four formed Draco following a session organised for a DVD documentary in 2007, Boycott Rhythm Machine II Versus. This led to them recording an album, ‘Zero’, which they released in 08 and is unfortunately rather hard to get a hold of outside the country. Following this they continued to perform live at festivals and venues around the country also incorporating visuals into the mix for a truly unforgettable experience. For those interested, Draco means the star that shines magnificently in the northern heaven sky.

I’d been wanting to try and get them on the show for some time now and once more thanks to the wonders of Twitter, I managed to get in contact with Numb and with a little help from our good friend Tatsuki they agreed to send us some Draco live recordings to use for a guest mix. We settled on the live at Samarat, also from 2008, which is a perfect example of the impact their live can make, at least without being there in person.

Massive thanks go out to Tatsuki and Numb for their help and to Draco for letting us air this live show. For more on them check their myspaces: Draco and Numb & Saidrum.

This guest mix by Mr Beatnick has rather been a long time coming, in fact I think nearly a year (without ribbing him more than I already have about it) when he helped arrange a meet with Take and Architeq in June 2009, which led to this rather lengthy but informative three way interview.

Anyways we originally agreed that he’d do a guest mix for the show and then life being what it is it didn’t happen until now. However good things do come to those who wait and somehow in between celebrating his birthday and releasing a free compilation of his music produced over the last 10 years (see below for more on that) he handed in his guest mix. And boy are you all in for a treat.

I think I first met Nick sometime last year after I just came back from Japan. He was one of the people who introduced me to the pleasures of CDR at Plastic People and who helped linked me with a whole bunch of people, like the aforementioned Take and Architeq but also Alex Chase and a few others. It’s fair to say he’s one of the nicest guys I’ve met on the London ‘scene’ but also one of the most clued up when it comes to not just music (man knows his record history) but also people and scenes. We’ve had lengthy discussions about the whole beat thing over the last year and I always enjoy hearing his take on various things through Twitter and his on and off contributions to FACT magazine.

As a producer he’s maybe not been the most pro-active in a sense, but the few releases he’s had have all been of a high quality and he’s definitely a producer who knows his shit and who you should keep an ear and an eye on, if only because when he does do something it’s almost always worth paying attention. Which leads us nicely to the aforementioned compilation he’s just put out online for free to celebrate his birthday and which features 30 tracks from the last ten years, including releases such as ‘Walk’ and ‘Falling Apples’ but also plenty of unreleased beats and remixes. You can get your fill right here in zip format (sendspace link).

As for the mix, well as it turns out he seems to have taken some degree of inspiration from our chats about beats and the evolution of hip hop production over the last decade, as well as from the mix I put out last year alongside Om Unit and Clockwork, A Boom Bap Continuum. As he puts it himself:

It’s my response in a way to the “boom bap continuum” theory laid out by Kper, 2 Tall/Om Unit and Clockwork. Essentially a bunch of boom bap beats in a classic mid nineties style, next to ideas that stood out for me at the time… and then a left turn in the end to some of the more recent twists on the idea.

Which you could also summarise as an hour of crispy headnod audio delicacies which are sure to leave regular listeners pleased as it takes in many of our own favourites from the last decade or so. As always tracklist, download link and stream are all below.

Much love and thanks to Nick for his contribution, and let me say it right now you’re welcome back anytime you want mate

So sit back and enjoy an hour of quality music to put you in the mood for the weekend, or whenever you get round to downloading it.

We continue our monthly Friends of Friends guest series with a 45 mins musical journey from Sven Swift, one half of the creative minds behind the excellent net/real label Error Broadcast alongside Flip, and as happens also a friend of ours. So this month is defo a family ting.

As always below are some words from Sven about the mix, an image supplied by him above and a full tracklist + download link and stream player. This month’s mix is a mellow affair, all about the fickle spots as the title suggests. I’m down with them too.

As a child, I’ve been obsessed with the light breaking under half closed eyes. There were these rich, fickle spots just below your sight, and I spent hours trying to focus and come by. Once we got a television set, this afternoon amusement stopped for the sake of colourful images that were no longer my own. Time flies.

With these 40 minutes of beats and textures, I tried to re-create the atmosphere of sitting on the couch blinking into the light of the afternoon sun and doing nothing else besides. This is not a collection of ambient tunes, sure. But the genre borders are blurred in the most adventurous Rap and Garage productions nowadays, and it is easy to get lost with an Abby Lee Tee, fuer.steps or Constrobuz track. Loads of exclusive material here. Please enjoy!

So without further ado get stuck in and be sure to check for Sven’s EB mixtape here.
Our latest guest mix comes from one of the pioneers of the Italian hip hop scene who has now transformed himself into a renowned producer of funk and disco under the name Katzuma. In recent years he’s made a name for himself in and outside of Italy for his deep productions taking its cue from classic funk and disco from the 70s and 80s and putting his own cosmic spin on it.

‘From Inner Space’ is a promo mix by Katzuma ahead of his involvement in the latest Original Cultures project, of the same name, which will see him direct a five piece band put together for the occasion and nicknamed the The Expanding Disco Machine. Over four days they’ll be locked in workshops putting together a one hour show inspired by the evolution of black music in America from the funk of the 70s to the early electronic experiment of the 80s. Alongside them will be Opificio Ciclope, a collective of video artists, who will design and produce visuals for the show. You can read more about the project and event here. Check out a trailer for the show below:

For more on Katzuma, check his bio here, and look out for his latest EP ‘Dr Know’ which is out now and features predominantly in this mix. The mix itself is a 25 minutes ride into Katzuma’s musical universe on a deep, cosmic tip.
