Benjamin One – Digital Summary

I discovered Benjamin One via Soundcloud, not sure how or when but that’s where I first heard his music. At one point, listening to his new beats and remixes it became clear that he also knew people I’d known/worked with over the years from around Bristol way. So I continued to check his stuff throughout the year, liking his penchant for headnodding beats and the odd, over-the-top bass indulgence.
About 3 weeks or so ago, as I was listening to another one of new tracks I thought his music would be a perfect fit for the show – a message request later and he’d kindly agreed to do a little guest mix for us.
So without further ado I’ll leave you in the very capable hands of Benjamin One, with a short but very sweet mix of work he’s done this year and things that have inspired him. A few words from the man himself before the jump…
Hip hop producer from the south west UK, inspired by hip hop culture and artists like Depth Charge, Photek, Dynametrix, Red Ninja, Dillinger, Hardnoise, Katch 22, MC Mello, Kold Sweat Records, Music of Life Records and a with very live show on my MPC sampler and beat machines that has let me share stages with Gaslampkiller, Anti Pop Consortium, Dose One and Jel, Bullion, Edan, Sole, Slugabed, Rekordah and many more both as a solo artist and as part of the Vertebrae and Root Elevation collectives

In The Studio with Murderbot

I’m not saying organising some studio time with Mashit alumnus, Dead Homies and Sleazetone owner and all-round nice guy Murderbot took a long time, but seriously I think Anti-Pop Consortium have split, done solo LPs and reformed in the time its taken to come together. Goddamn!
So: whilst on his latest European tour, we finally got him in (when he should have been in court defending a $24k lawsuit, no less) for some time to take us through his favourite tracks of late, including a good few teasers from his own very excellent Sleazetone label. Taking in juke tracks, horn-led junglism and even some UR, this is a fine step inside the man’s mind…

Joe Beats: back with your November installment!

I can’t lie: its always a pleasure when I get an email from Joe saying “here’s the next show”. Why? Because I can’t second-guess what he’s going to deliver, and I like that. The first show he did as a permanent presenter for us threw in some real curveballs; blues and soul that I thought only I tended to listen to regularly. This time around, Joe steps up with an admirable show theme, celebrating the unsung heroes of modern soul music; those singer/songwriters who tend to fly under the radar but who are capable of delivering music every bit as nice as those classic soul years of the 60s and 70s.
introducing our newest presenter: Joe Beats

A word from Trick: As a massive fan of Joe Beats’ productions, we were delighted when he stepped up last time to present a special show for us. In fact, we liked it so much that we invited Joe to join the presenting team on Rhythm Incursions and do more regular shows for us. To be honest, we thought he’d say “nah…”, but quite the opposite occurred; we got an enthusiastic “yes” and Joe set about doing his first show as a more regular presence on the team. And now, here it is, online for your listening pleasure. At this point I’ll hand over to Joe himself…

Podcast exclusive: Carlo – Vol.888 Mix

A while back, our good friend Carlo contacted us about doing an old skool, pause-button style mix of tracks he’d sampled, along with tracks the likes of Sixtoo, Four Tet and others had sampled too. Knowing how much Carlo knows his stuff in this area, we said a hearty “sure!” and waited to hear the result….

Last week Dday One stepped up to guest-present Rhythm Incursions for us. In keeping with all the guest-presented shows this one was a belter, with Dday even splicing in content from previous shows including dry pisstakes on Mr Trick’s presenting, thoughts from Wrongtom and more. Did we love it? You bet we did – hats off to the man we say!
Words from the man himself:
“Thanks to everyone that listened to Rhythm Incursions this Saturday.
It was great mixing and playing some new stuff….”

The Joe Beats Takeover

Any regular listeners know how much we love Joe – as well as badgering him for instrumentals to use in mixes, we also featured his amazing “Indie Rock Blues” CD, a disc I’m still caning the crap out of these many months later. In short, this man’s name is apt: he drops some of the largest beats out there.
With that in mind, you can imagine our delight when Joe said yes to taking over a show to bring us his own selection of tracks. Featuring exclusives from his forthcoming CD “Diverse Recourse” (dropping soon on Bully Records), not to mention a raft of other unreleased and brand new shit, this is quite simply one of the most bumpin’ shows we’ve ever aired…
