<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

Heeeeeeeeee’s back! As promised by the man himself, here is the second installment of Carlo’s φ (pronounced “Phi”) series. Missed the first one? Where were you, under a bush?! Here’s what Carlo said then about the series:

The general idea with this mix is to play edits of songs I find particularly interesting/engaging/inspiring that did not yet get the recognition I think they deserved. As with “Vol. 888″, the idea is not to mix songs according to tempo, but rather according to tuning and feel, in the high-school-mix-tape-for-your-girl fashion. And no, once again, there will be no tracklist, but feel free to drop me a line if you need specific info about a track…I’ll see what I can do. Massive thanks to everyone that spread the word about any of my releases, as well as those that bought my music…There’s a bunch more coming your way. Final thanks go to the Rhythm Incursions extended family, for allowing me to contribute to this constant, impressive musical output. Epic.

We love Carlo. We love his mixes. We REALLY loved Phi 1. And trust us, we’re loving Phi 2… possibly even more. Now: GO GET SOME.

I can’t lie: its always a pleasure when I get an email from Joe saying “here’s the next show”. Why? Because I can’t second-guess what he’s going to deliver, and I like that. The first show he did as a permanent presenter for us threw in some real curveballs; blues and soul that I thought only I tended to listen to regularly. This time around, Joe steps up with an admirable show theme, celebrating the unsung heroes of modern soul music; those singer/songwriters who tend to fly under the radar but who are capable of delivering music every bit as nice as those classic soul years of the 60s and 70s.

As Joe himself says: “some of you hip hoppers may not like this, but you know what? TFB”. Whilst I’d like to think he has a point, I’d beg to differ for the simple reason that I think the people who listen to Rhythm Incursions have broad tastes, and in this instance the selection is so stellar, you won’t fail but to love it. Some real surprises lurk in there too; who’d have though Ray LaMontagne had a track like Three More Days in his output? Maybe you did… but I know I didn’t.

But enough talk; grab the show and take a listen. If you’re anything like me you’ll be making notes from the tracklisting below and feeling good that you have a bunch of awesome artists to go learn about. Go!

Back in November 2007, Bully Records’ alumni Carlo sent us a mix, entitled Vol.888. It was a pause-tape style mix, and showcased a bunch of obscure tracks, some of which had been sampled by the likes of Four Tet and Sixtoo. With no tracklisting offered, it was almost like a sample spotters’ challenge, dropping song after song where you thought “goddamn… where have I heard that before??”. Quite aside from that element of course, it was also a stellar selection.

Now, I’ll be honest here: we thought people would like this mix. However we had no idea how fast word would spread and how many downloads this thing would cop. A year on, and we’ve totalled the downloads to be well past the 12,000 mark.

Cut to the present, and its time for Carlo’s next offering: φ. Pronounced “Phi”, this is the first part of an ongoing series, and trust me, if you liked Vol.888, you’re gonna go insane for this. I asked Carlo to give us a few words on the mix:

The general idea with this mix is to play edits of songs I find particularly interesting/engaging/inspiring that did not yet get the recognition I think they deserved. As with “Vol. 888″, the idea is not to mix songs according to tempo, but rather according to tuning and feel, in the high-school-mix-tape-for-your-girl fashion. Final thanks go to the Rhythm Incursions extended family, for allowing me to contribute to this constant, impressive musical output. Epic.

As Carlo says, there is more to come and this is just the beginning. But enough words: grab the mix and get listening.

It was a pause-tape style mix, and showcased a bunch of obscure tracks, some of which had been sampled by the likes of Four Tet and Sixtoo. With no tracklisting offered, it was almost like a sample spotters' challenge, dropping song after song where you thought "goddamn... where have I heard that before??". Quite aside from that element of course, it was also a stellar selection.

Now, I'll be honest here: we thought people would like this mix. However we had no idea how fast word would spread and how many downloads this thing would cop. A year on, and we've totalled the downloads to be well past the 12,000 mark.

Cut to the present, and its time for Carlo's next offering: φ. Pronounced "Phi", this is the first part of an ongoing series, and trust me, if you liked Vol.888, you're gonna go insane for this. I asked Carlo to give us a few words on the mix:

The general idea with this mix is to play edits of songs I find particularly interesting/engaging/inspiring that did not yet get the recognition I think they deserved. As with "Vol. 888", the idea is not to mix songs according to tempo, but rather according to tuning and feel, in the high-school-mix-tape-for-your-girl fashion. And no, once again, there will be no tracklist, but feel free to drop me a line if you need specific info about a track...I'll see what I can do. Massive thanks to everyone that spread the word about any of my releases, as well as those that bought my music...There's a bunch more coming your way. Final thanks go to the Rhythm Incursions extended family, for allowing me to contribute to this constant, impressive musical output. Epic.

As Carlo says, there is more to come and this is just the beginning. But enough words: grab the mix and get listening.

A word from Trick: As a massive fan of Joe Beats’ productions, we were delighted when he stepped up last time to present a special show for us. In fact, we liked it so much that we invited Joe to join the presenting team on Rhythm Incursions and do more regular shows for us. To be honest, we thought he’d say “nah…”, but quite the opposite occurred; we got an enthusiastic “yes” and Joe set about doing his first show as a more regular presence on the team. And now, here it is, online for your listening pleasure. At this point I’ll hand over to Joe himself…

I normally do a big un-paused mix of exclusives and originals but….meh….I wasn’t really in the mood for any of that this time out. It’s summer. I’m busy. It’s humid. I’m weening myself onto a fish diet. Cutting the chocolate is making me cranky – haha. Whatever the excuse, it’s not always a well planned out party. I hit points -like now- where I’m completely exhausted by music and am forced to find new and interesting ways to keep myself enthusiastic. I guess it’s all about being patient. I hate how pretentious this all sounds but ehhh…if it is, is.

As the tracklisting goes on, particularly in the middle, a common theme is redemption and compensation. Great lyrics and music will be sacrificed by a corny, almost comical, voice (David Amram). On the inverse, a downer and dragger will be saved by an extraordinaty vocal (The Savage Rose). Cynical tones will be matched and trumped by beautiful music (Denny Guy). There are tracks with bacon so thick, I would never normally play them in such condition unless I felt they were stellar (Smokestack Lightning, Electric Prunes). Included are songs whose opening minute deceive you in a way that almost makes you mad because it naturally captures the one (and only) thing about 60′s California innocence Brian Wilson couldn’t (Wendy & Bonnie). Others that repeatedly abuse your attention span with jam session hooks only to reward you handsomely with incredible breakdown after breakdown right as you’re about to give up on it (Linn County). Can you hang?

A while back, our good friend Carlo contacted us about doing an old skool, pause-button style mix of tracks he’d sampled, along with tracks the likes of Sixtoo, Four Tet and others had sampled too. Knowing how much Carlo knows his stuff in this area, we said a hearty “sure!” and waited to hear the result….

So, a couple of weeks back we got this, and decided that it was something best dished up as a podcast-only affair, for one simple reason: it warrants more than just one quick airing on the radio show. This is one of those mixes you have to listen to 10 times before you even get halfway to spotting all the samples in it. In fact, quite aside from the musical excellence, it could almost be a challenge: name the samples!

Anyways, sit back and enjoy what we think is an incredible tour of the music that inspired the songs. To us, this kind of mix acts as much as a document, showing the material your favourite artists were loving enough to sample and re-mould into their own creations. Fine stuff, we hope you’ll agree…

Any regular listeners know how much we love Joe – as well as badgering him for instrumentals to use in mixes, we also featured his amazing “Indie Rock Blues” CD, a disc I’m still caning the crap out of these many months later. In short, this man’s name is apt: he drops some of the largest beats out there.

With that in mind, you can imagine our delight when Joe said yes to taking over a show to bring us his own selection of tracks. Featuring exclusives from his forthcoming CD “Diverse Recourse” (dropping soon on Bully Records), not to mention a raft of other unreleased and brand new shit, this is quite simply one of the most bumpin’ shows we’ve ever aired…

<itunes:summary>Any regular listeners know how much we love Joe - as well as badgering him for instrumentals to use in mixes, we also featured his amazing "Indie Rock Blues" CD, a disc I'm still caning the crap out of these many months later. In short, this man's name is apt: he drops some of the largest beats out there.

With that in mind, you can imagine our delight when Joe said yes to taking over a show to bring us his own selection of tracks. Featuring exclusives from his forthcoming CD "Diverse Recourse" (dropping soon on Bully Records), not to mention a raft of other unreleased and brand new shit, this is quite simply one of the most bumpin' shows we've ever aired...
