Rhythm Incursions – February 2010

February 26, 2010 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent

It’s February, the weather on this side of the world could still be primarily described as apocalyptic and the recession is still going on apparently. All of which means you need some fresh new music and aural pleasures more than ever. Fear not, we’ve got you covered.

Up this month we take a close look at Mux Mool, an NYC-based artist we first discovered thanks to Jakub at Ghostly Int and who will be releasing a new album on the label in the coming weeks. We look at some new and older tracks of his, showing his versatile approach to hip hop and electronic music. It goes without saying we’re big fans.

Elsewhere this month we’ve got lots of new, forthcoming tracks including new Big Dada and Ninja Tune releases by Infesticons, Bonobo, Jagga Jazzist and Juice Aleem, new tracks from Fulgeance, Pixelord, FaltyDL, Daisuke Tanabe, Kyle Hall, Nocando featuring Busdriver, Soul Litchfield, Rudi Zygadlo, Oh No and some tasty exclusives from Wrongtom, Om Unit, Tatsuki and Depakote which you won’t hear anywhere else (unless the artists themselves are bumping it).

So without further ado I’ll leave you for another 2 hours of musical goodness, and excuse my rather gruff tone of voice on the presenting tip but I’ve been fighting a cold (or is that man flu?) for the last week and haven’t been feeling very well. Still you can’t stop the good shit so get stuck in, sit back and crank it up to 11 on the volume dial.

As usual the playlist, see below, includes full links and details to all artists and labels pages/websites where you can buy or download the music. If you like what you hear than go support it.

See you next month for more of the same and look out for more exclusive mixes from Primus Luta and Himuro Yoshiteru in the coming weeks.

Rhythm Incursions – January 2010

We return to the regular broadcasts with our first show of the year, and we are starting 2010 as we intend to continue with 2 hours of fresh new music and forthcoming releases alongside some recent favourites.

It seems 2010 is starting rather well, with a slew of new releases and announced albums for the first quarter of the year. With this in mind I decided to make the mini feature a look forward at what 2010 has in stock both from artists and labels I am personally looking forward to. So I selected 10 tracks for 2010 which I think highlight this nicely. In no particular order we’ve got Om Unit, Illum Sphere, Slugabed, Shlomo, Instra:mental, Dizz1, GOD and Loops Haunt, Teebs and Jackhigh, Letherette, Lorn and labels like All City Records, Svetlana Industries, FoF and Nod Navigators.

Though to be honest pretty much the whole show is a look forward to the new year and most of the artists are worthy of being ones to watch for 2010. Alongside this we’ve got new music from the likes of Mr Chop & CL Smooth, Ernest Gonzales, Bullion, Aquadrop, Jose James, Hyperdub, Lone, Robot Koch, Greymatter and more.

As usual you can download the show directly at the link below. If you want to make your life easier than make sure to subscribe and never miss a show. You can do so via email, RSS or our iTunes feed all of which are easily accessible with the fancy little icons on the right hand side.

So that’s it for this month, I’ll let you to sit back and crank up the stereo to 11. Look out for a series of guest mixes and live shows from Japan starting this weekend. And I’ll be back with another show next month with more of the same. Until then enjoy the music and if you like what you hear than be sure to go out there and support the music and artists.

Rhythm Incursions – Best of 09 pt 2

bo2009med

We wrap up 2009 with part 2 of our ‘best of’ mix. This is the last show of the year and continues to run down some of our favourite tracks from the last 12 months.

The mix starts with our second ‘Labels of 09′ mini feature looking at Ramp Recordings, a label that for me has had an incredible year and put out good music, consistently without worrying about scenes, genres and things like that. Doing eclectic isn’t necessarily hard though, doing it well however is and for me Ramp is one of those labels who managed to do just that: serve up a truly eclectic mix of releases, artists and styles and do so with a cohesion, quality control and consistency that only makes the music shine that much more. Add to this some quality artwork and an ear for snapping up producers that are bubbling under, like FaltyDL, Shortstuff or Tokimonsta, and you have a label which you need to make time for if you haven’t yet.

As I said they’ve had a rather busy year with something close to ten or so releases so I’ve managed to fit as much as I can in this mini feature with pretty much one track from every release this year, bar one or two. If you like what you hear then check the website and catch up with some seriously good music.

Elsewhere part 2 of the best of 09 features music from the likes of Darkstar, Peverelist, Joker, Dorian Concept, Daedelus, Clutchy Hopkins, Soundspecies, Mount Kimbie, Hudson Mohawke, Floating Points, Machinedrum, Poirier, Blue Daisy, Jamie Vex’d, Quarta330 and many more.

As usual tracklist and download links below. And if you haven’t yet may we suggest you sign up to the newsletter, RSS feed or iTunes feed and this way you’ll never miss a show.

So that’s it for 2009, and the first decade of this century/millenium. Many thanks to all our listeners, all the labels and artists we’ve worked with and who’ve supported us, all our guests, our extended family, DDay One, Mr Trick, 2tall and everyone else. It’s been a great year and here’s to 2010!

Peace

Laurent

Rhythm Incursions – Best of 09 pt1

bo2009med

And so here we are at the end of the year, and the decade. Let us therefore indulge in this most seasonal of traditions with a two-part, end of year ‘best of’ show for 2009. The idea was to build on last year’s first installment, and then before I knew it I’d sat down in front of the computer with a shortlist of 100+ tracks and the idea of actually doing a proper mix as opposed to a simple selection of tracks. As with last year there is no talking this time round, just pure music selection for your enjoyment.

We start with part 1 and 50 odd tracks which have all been highlights of the year here at Rhythm Inc towers from the likes of Architeq, Paul White, Alice Russell, Raekwon, DOOM, Oh No, Heliocentrics, Loops Haunt, LuckyMe, Robot Koch, Milanese, King Midas Sound, 2nd Class Citizen and many, many more. The selection is a nice representation of this year’s playlists too with a couple of previously un-aired goodies thrown in on top. As always complete tracklist below with link to the mix for those that aren’t subscribed to our feed or iTunes channels (hint hint).

As I said this best of show is more of a ‘mix’ than our normal shows – everything has been mixed and mashed up to allow me to fit as much music as I can in 75 minutes and still give every track a chance to shine.

Part two will be dropping very shortly, either on Christmas eve or Boxing day (the day after xmas) – it all depends on how much I manage to get done tonight. It will feature another 50 or so tracks from our best of 2009 list as well as the second ‘Labels of 09′ mini-feature, this time looking at the output of Ramp Recordings which is by far one of the stand out labels of the year for us. And don’t forget to check last month’s show for part of our ‘Labels of 09′ mini-feature which looked at the excellent One Handed Music.

So I won’t keep you any longer. Get stuck in, lie back, crank up the volume, ignore the family members and enjoy the first half of our best of 09 show!

Rhythm Incursions – November 09

We reach the last but one show of the year with yet more exclusives and brand new music for your listening enjoyment. In addition, the mini feature this month is part 1 of a ‘Labels of 2009′ feature as I couldn’t just choose one label this year so instead decided to shine a light on two labels who both deserve it in my opinion.

Music wise we’ve got some exclusive previews of music from Om Unit, Loops Haunt, Debruit, Leatherette and Ernesto Gonzales, all of which will be dropping in the first quarter of 2010. Alongside these we have the usual fresh music from a host of artists and labels including Hyperdub, Ramp Recordings, Tectonic, Dutty Artz, the amazing Mr Chop release on Now Again/Five Day Weekend, the psychedelic new Edan release, Madlib and Strong Arm Steady, Non+Herrmutt Lobby, SA-RA, DJ Food, Ben Sharpa and many more.

As for the mini feature, well part 1 of the ‘Labels of 2009′ shines a light on One Handed MUsic, the London-based independent headed by Alex Chase (also responsible for Stones Throw in Europe). Despite, or most likely because, its small roster of artists, 2009 has been a good year for the label release wise with the Paul White debut album, another 2 EPs from the prolific London beat-maker, an EP from Bullion the label’s other, hugely promising London artist, and an amazing EP from Fulgeance, the French MPC master who does ‘chopped & screwed house’ (as Mr Trick called it) like no one else can. The releases aren’t just the reason why I choose OHM as a label of the year – it’s everything else, like Alex’s obviously on point A&R and the artwork and attention that has gone into every release, whether physical or digital (anyone who’s seen the hand-sewn pillow cases for the Paul White album will testity). So I’ll let the music do the talking with a selection of five tracks from this year’s releases. Look out for OHM to continue their rise in 2010 with more Paul White, a long-awaited Tranquill EP and more.

Part 2 of the mini-feature will be coming next month, looking at Ramp Recordings, which ironically Alex Chase pointed out was also run by someone from Suffolk, that is Tom@Ramp. So looks like Suffolk had it on lock for ‘09 then – who would have thought. The December show will most likely be similar to the one I put together last year, ie. a best of 09 mix with the label mini feature included in there. Look out for details soon, it’ll drop just before xmas in time for the seasonal overload.

For now though, sit back, crank up the volume and enjoy. And remember check the tracklist for full details of websites and where to buy the music and go out and support if you like what you hear!

Rhythm Incursions – October 09

November 5, 2009 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent

Despite it being nearly one week into November, we’re bringing you the October show which suffered the delaying combo of both my laptop dying and a rather nasty cold hitting me in the same week. The show was actually wrapped 2 weeks ago but we couldn’t get it out till now. Lucky you though, as you’ll be getting another show in a few weeks with our November edition.

I realised as I was putting the tracklist together that for some reason this month features a rather high number of freely available tracks. This is in part a reflection of my own listening habits (and the fact I spend way too much time on the internet) but also I think of the move by artists and labels to make more music available freely as a way to promote paying releases, gigs and other merchandise. Lastly I would also say that the increasing number of free tracks in our playlists this year is a reflection of the increase in quality in free music. Whereas before free tracks where often throwaway material, today an increasing number of artists are releasing bootlegs, remixes and their own tracks for free and keeping a high quality control on it. Again I think this is something that plays into the aforementioned ‘free music as promotion’ vehicle. All the artists with a freely available track in this month’s show also have physical, paying releases and quite a few are actually established artists in their own ’scenes’.

What about the music though? This month we take in a rather wide range of music, reflecting the diversity of what’s been trickling into our inbox/hands. From the psychedelic meets Afghani traditional music of Ariana Delawari to straight beats (and some incredible flips) from KenLo, fLako, Fulgeance and Dibiase via tribal house vibes from Blue Daisy, 21st century boogie from Dam Funk, hard-hitting hip hop from Kids in Tracksuits and Mr Lif and forward-thinking productions from Om Unit, Mike Slott and Talen. And that’s only part of it, there’s more and it’s all high quality as far as I’m concerned.

This month’s mini-feature is a tie-in with the 5th anniversary of the Hyperdub label. Headed by Kode 9, Hyperdub has long been a favourite at Rhythm Inc, with Trick regularly playing the label’s early releases as both the show and label share roughly the same birthdays. To celebrate their anniversary Hyperdub have curated an incredible compilation, called ‘5′, spanning two CDs or 5 12″s and featuring classic material from the label’s archive, unreleased one-offs and 15 or so brand new productions from the label’s artists and friends including names like Flying Lotus, Mala, Martin, Samiyam, Ikonika, Quarta330, and more. It’s fair to say that ‘5′ is the final nail in the coffin for lesser labels, if it was even needed, that shows just how influential and forward thinking Hyperdub has been as an independent over the years. From its humble beginnings to its current wide palette of sounds, Hyperdub continues to do what everyone least expects, and that’s just one of many reasons why we love them and their music. For the feature we’ve got four tracks from the compilation taking in The Bug under his King Midas Sound alias, Mala, Kode 9 and Samiyam – music as different as it comes and yet somehow logically intertwined.

So enough with the words, sit back and crank the volume for 2h of the latest and freshest music. And stay tuned for some special shows coming up in the month. For now enjoy!

Rhythm Incursions September 09

September 30, 2009 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent

We roll firmly into autumn with an extended show, clocking at just under 2 hours. Fear not though as it’s a case of all the good bits and none of the fat, combined with a majority of tracks being longer than usual and my opting to let them play out. Also this month we shine a light on one of our favourite, and often slept on, producers: 2econd Class Citizen.

New music comes from the likes of Breakestra, Kid Koala, Shafiq Husayn, Om Unit, Subeena, Kryptic Minds, Shawn Lee, Dorian Concept, Dextah and more. We’ve got previews of forthcoming albums from Foreign Beggars, Aardvarck, Themselves, Robot Koch and the aforementioned 2econd Class Citizen. From the deeper ends of the dubstep spectrum to cinematic instrumental hip hop via modern boom bap and lush vocals, we’ve got it all nicely covered.

2econd Class Citizen, signed to Equinox Records, is someone who’s been on our radar for years now, since the Needlework days, and ahead of his debut album on the German label we’ve put together a small selection of tracks from his discography, including some favourites like Wishin Well. Fans of instrumental hip hop, especially towards the more cinematic, moody end of things, should definitely pay attention if the name isn’t already familiar to them. Not only that the man has an incredible knack for flipping samples in a haunting fashion as well as blending a certain folk aesthetic into his beats.

As usual check the tracklist below for full details of where to cop the music, how to support the artists and more. Subscribers should have the podcast on its way to their hard drives as we speak, and if you haven’t already then may we suggest you add our RSS feed or iTunes channel to your favourites?

Stay tuned for more guest mixes and some surprises throughout October. Up next it’s back to L.A with DDay One.
