Right then, it’s been a busy beginning of 2012 here at Rhythm Inc towers so busy in fact we couldn’t deliver this show in time for January. It more than makes up for the delay however by showcasing a plethora of producers/artists/labels which we think are going to have a good 2012 and who you should definitely keep an eye out for.

Titled the 2012 Watchlist, we opted to do an entire show focused on these new talents rather than a shorter mini feature – so everything in this month’s show aside from a couple of oldies is 100% approved by us as being hot shit for 2012. We’ve got bags of music from new and upcoming talents including the likes of ENA, MNLTHM, Youngteamm, Darkhouse Family, EAN, Danny Scrilla, Beat Inc, Ssaliva, Tehbis, Sweatson Klank, Memory9, Homeboy Sandman and Soosh – some of these names you might recognise as they’ve been grafting for a few years, others are recent additions to our ‘quality’ index. Label wise the likes of Hessle Audio, Astro:Dynamics, Keysound (who were our label of 2011), Ninja Tune, Sonic Router, Brainmath and 7even Recordings all get a look in – some are established others brand new, but all of them are likely to make an impact this year. And as mentioned we’ve also got classics and new music from established heads like Downliners Sekt, Machinedrum and B-Ju. I don’t know about you but I think it’s going to be a good year.

As announced last year we’ve started a new monthly, live broadcast over in Berlin on the excellent BLN.FM – the city’s finest non-profit radio station (and I believe Germany’s first station of the kind!). When I say live, the show is being broadcasted live but is pre-recorded. Each month myself (Laurent Fintoni), Primus Luta who helms RIPL and Raid System (aka XLII and Broken Haze) who helm RIRS will take turns in curating the one hour mix/playlist and each show will be presented by myself in regular Rhythm Inc fashion running down artists, releases and related info. The flavour of our new BLN.FM shows is slightly more dancefloor than our regular shows here (aside from RIRS) so expect plenty of delicious dance related musical treats over the next twelve months.

Each monthly goes out on the first Tuesday of the month live on BLN.FM from 7PM CET (which is GMT+1, so please check your local airtime). You can stream it from BLN.FM and each show is archived both on their site and here where we will podcast them a week or so after the air date (we’re bit late this month I know).

This first show was curated by Raid System featuring one hour of their favourite dancefloor riddims of the second half of 2011. As always XLII and Broken Haze take in turn to mix 4/5 tracks each. And so we reach the end of the year and the obligatory retrospective edition. This year we’ve opted for a slightly different format, bringing together our three regular shows – RIPL, RIRS and Rhythm Incursions – into one bumper 3h edition that looks back at our favourite music from 2011. With each of us selecting one hour of music, this end of year show features primarily music and tracks which we’ve previously aired as well as a few additions culled from releases and/or artists we’ve supported this year.

We start with the Rhythm Incursions mix presented by Laurent which features a mini feature on the label of the year which is Keysound Recordings, the London label headed by Blackdown. Despite having had a fairly quiet year in comparison to other labels, Keysound’s put out three outstanding albums from Damu, LV & Joshua Idehen and Sully, as well as a handful of 12″s that have all been featured on previous shows and been staples of many sets. As the adage goes quality not quantity and while it’s true that this has actually been a busy year for the label we feel that they really deserve the accolade. Alongside Keysound, the mix features regulars from the past year as well as our favourite releases including Om Unit, Shabazz Palaces, Slugabed, EAN, Kode 9, Yosi Horikawa (with his track from the Nihon Kizuna compilation), NastyNasty, Mark Pritchard under both his solo and Africa Hitech aliases, Machinedrum, Sepalcure and 1000Names.

Primus Luta meanwhile also showcases his favourites – many recognisable from his own 2011 shows – in his mix. A straight up one hour mix with no talking it features some of this year’s best releases from both the electronic and rap world with the likes of 2562, Busdriver, Kendrick Lamar, Blk.Adonis, Welder, Shigeto, Lorn, Siriusmo, Madlib and Dibiase, DRC Music alongside Om Unit, Sepalcure and Sully who all make additional appearances.

And as for Raid System they opted to do another top 20 countdown of their favourite tracks of the year, though this time it isn’t live. Their mix starts with a short run down of our Nihon Kizuna release as well as Broken Haze’s joint EP with B.Bravo before getting into their top 20 for the year featuring many of the artists and labels they’ve been supporting including Joker, Nino, Rustie, Hudson Mohawke, Funkystepz, Zdot, Bobby Tank, Toddska, Starkey, Daniel Haaksman, Knight Riderz, S-Type, Munchi and more.

So there you have it, 2011 the year that was. We wrap up the summer with a special ‘live’ show recorded last weekend during one of our Maisonette Electronique Ustream shows. With a fair bit of delay due to workloads and a rather annoying ear infection, the latest edition of the Rhythm Incursions podcast is now up covering July/August and also making up for the missed June edition. Still at least the homies Primus Luta and Raid System have been holding it down while I’ve been missing shows this year so if you haven’t be sure to check their archives!

Up this month is the usual 2 hours of musical goodness and discerning selection for your ears. So after a two month hiatus partly due to earthquakes and other natural disasters we’re back with a regular Rhythm Incursions podcast, unsurprisingly shock full of new music and exclusives as I try and work my way through the backlog accumulated in the last two months.

Over two hours we cover a lot of ground this month with new and forthcoming music from Machinedrum, Cardopusher, Anti-G, Mr Beatnick, Neon Jung, Mark E, Downliners Sekt, Tom Trago, Jon Wayne, Africa Hitech, Shabazz Palaces, Com Truise, DZA, Eliot Lipp, LV and Joshua Idehen, Ossie and much more. We’ve also got some sneak peek exclusives from NastyNasty, Machinedrum’s Juke/Footwork project, our old friend from Amsterdam Coco B, Klic and a few others. So with a little delay here comes the February podcast from my good self, aptly retitled to March pt.1 – expect another show end of month as usual. With the shorter amount of days last month and relentless work I’ve had to finish before my upcoming trip (more on that soon) it just wasn’t possible to get the show done in time without rushing it. Add to this the fact that this instalment is a seriously heavy affair and I felt it was only right to take a few more days and give you something worthwhile.

Putting the tracklist together I’ve just realised that out of 41 tracks in this show, 34 are forthcoming – a good reflection of the quality and amount of good music we’ve been privileged to receive in the inbox. And there were another 10 odd tracks I wanted to include. This month’s show is also a reflection of labels we’re feeling this year. Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus’ musical child, is the subject of our mini feature with new music from Mono/Poly, Taylor McFerrin, Matthewdavid and Jerimiah Jae covering the spectrum from blunted beats to smooth, modern jazz. And then we’ve also got the Friends of Friends label (close friends of ours) represented with 3 tracks from upcoming releases by Shlomho, Groundislava and Mexicans with Guns, our other good friends at Project Mooncircle are featured with two recent releases from Robot Koch & John Robinson and Long Arm and then there’s Car Crash Set who’ve sent us new music from Pixelord and John Lemmon (awesome name btw).

Elsewhere we’ve got new music from Uncle Lew & Coco B, Kode 9 & The Spaceape, Julio Bashmore, SCB, Danny Drive Thru, Lorn, Non Projects, Rick Wilhite, Austin Peralta, Subeena, Quantic, Chrissy Murderbot, Om Unit, Nicolas Jaar, Lopez, Siriusmo, Royalty, 1000 Names, Prefuse 73 and more – covering a broad range of music. I somehow feel that this month’s show really lives up to our tagline of discerning music for discerning ears. It changes and moves and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together.
