<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

Well… where do we start with this one? EAN is yet another long term family member here at Rhythm Inc towers. Most of you may remember him best as his previous incarnation Various Production under which he released some of the most groundbreaking dubstep that wasn’t dubstep of the late 00s. Since parting ways with the collective he’s been quiet – as is his wont – yet busy: he mixed the Ghostpoet album, did some remixes here and there (including one for Om Unit’s Searching which we premiered a couple years back) and more recently had releases on Project Mooncircle (Finest Ego UK compilation and 10th anniversary boxset) and put the finishing touches to a four track EP that will see the light of day on Om Unit’s (yes him again – they’ve worked together for years see) Cosmic Bridge label. That EP will be out in June, more details to follow. So suffice to say for those of you in a tl;dr kinda mood EAN is a boss and one of the best producers you don’t know you liked.

Which leads us to this, a couple of remixes from the man himself which he is giving away for free on his Soundcloud. The remixes, one of London artist Ruby Goe and the other of Portico Quartet, have been a staple in the sets of people like Salva, Om Unit, Dip Some and myself for quite some time and they’re finally available for everyone to play loud and enjoy. They also act as the perfect primer for what’s to come. Influenced by the recent footwork mutations, the tracks float around the 170 mark and are quite frankly something else. But then again I’m biased so I’d say that.

Enough words, let the music talk. You can stream and download both via the SC embed below and the Get On It refix is also included in this post which goes out to all our podcast subscribers – if you’re not yet subscribed then you missing out, catch up with the handy iTunes/RSS buttons at the bottom.

Look out for more from EAN soon, a fully fledged site and more music including a remix for our very own XLII on Civil Music dropping next week. Now excuse me while I go catch the 149…

Today’s guest mix is brought to you via Primus Luta who put us onto REKChampa a little while back. Even funnier, when Shigeto was staying over the other week he mentioned that it was him that put Primus onto REK in the first place – small world as they say. So considering the recommendations he comes with, it’s a pleasure to have the man step up for a little spotlight guest mix on our humble airwaves.

Coming at you from the greater Atlanta area, REKChampa is someone I know little about so I guess this is a great case of letting the music do the talking. In this case the mix showcases music he’s been listening to recently and you can hear his own work over at his Soundcloud page – a perfect one/two combo. The mix features the likes of Eliphino, Jack Dixon, Lando Kal and RAJA, the latter someone who also comes highly recommended from Shigeto.

The artwork for the occasion is by Saish Kotecha. Be sure to check Rek Champa on the internets and stay tuned for more of his music on these here airwaves. In the meantime enjoy the mix!

As always download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes to receive all shows direct.

This week’s Friday guest mix comes from the low lying lands of Holland (see what we did there?), where the Rwina label resides. Headed by Akkachar, Rwina’s been ticking all the right boxes in recent years with some of our favourite releases by the likes of Desto, NastyNasty and Eprom among others. Their next big release is the latter’s debut album ‘Metahuman’ which is going to twist quite a lot of heads, and we should know cos we’ve had some early preview action.

When Akkachar offered to do us a mix we obviously couldn’t say no, and he delivered with a 40 odd minute journey not too dissimilar in style and substance to Om Unit’s recent session or our habitual leanings for slow/fast mixes. Featuring on there is Rwina material old and new including new Eprom, Deft and Desto as well as appearances by many of our favourite peoples including the Cosmic Bridge family Kromestar, EAN, Om Unit and Moresounds, Nasty Ways (aka Eprom and Boreta), Manni Dee, Slick Shoota and more. Suffice to say it bangs rather loudly, perfect to get you in the mood for the weekend.

For more on Rwina follow em on Soundcloud and get ready for Metahuman!

As always you can download and/or stream below or simple subscribe and never miss a show.

Yes I know what you’re thinking, Rhythm Incursions is starting to look like an outpost for Irish music these days. What can I say, we found a rabbit hole and we went down it, then some old friends came along… so, you know. Picking up from Bantum’s mix a few weeks back the latest in our #lightbox series comes courtesy of Monto, one of the younger artists who took part in the Lightbox tour and one who shows a great deal of promise – especially considering the new music we’ve been hearing.

For this mix he kept it simple and sweet with 30 mins of modern selections – including a fair few Rhythm Inc favourites like Om Unit, Mark Pritchard and Wiley – and a couple of his own forthcoming productions. Currently based out of Waterford, Monto’s working on a debut EP for Melted Music – alongside fellow Lightboxer SertOne – and has a bunch of free tracks and remixes available on his Soundcloud I recommend you check out. Don’t forget you can check out the story of how this whole #lightbox thing came about with our first mix from Tenaka.

For now consider this an appetiser and expect to hear more from the man in coming months both here and elsewhere. As always you can stream and/or download below or simply subscribe and never miss a show.

Enjoy!

Uncle Lew is family round these parts. We go back to the scratch days and those that know us know that this means we’ve got a lot of shared history. Originally running under the name Square One, he moved on – as many have – to production and electronic music, most notably producing some incredible beats for the Grandeurs of Delusion project alongside fellow scratch family members Jimmy Hatetank and Maroon. Life and travels and the like getting in the way, not much aside from the GOD work really saw the light of day in the last four years.

Things are about to change though and to celebrate this, if you will, we’re giving you an exclusive live set from the man that was originally performed at this year’s Community Scratch Games in Galway and has been re-recorded here for your aural pleasure. So ok technically this isn’t a live recording, but the name’s still valid and I couldn’t think of anything cleverer. More importantly the mix showcases plenty of new Uncle Lew productions, a few of which are set to form his first solo EP proper – Heavy Romance – which will drop soon. We’re working on it as the kids say and full details shall be announced. Alongside his own work, here he showcases a lot of the dancefloor tracks that have been big hits with us at Rhythm Inc including a fair few close family members and friends such as Lorn, Salva, Machinedrum, Om Unit, EAN and Sleeping Giant, the last of which is none other than the man CocoB – if you were a Turntable Radio listener than you know, and if you don’t then you’ll want to know very soon.

So all a bit cryptic I give you that but for those in a tl;dr mood the summary goes as follows: Uncle Lew is stupid dope fresh retarded, this mix will prove that and there’s an EP coming that’s equally fresh. And more shall follow. For now you can as always download and/or stream below, or simply subscribe and get all the shows directly to your box/player.

For more on Uncle Lew peep the Soundcloud where details of the EP will likely be added in the near future as well as previews. There’s also a new Grandeurs of Delusion LP coming real soon, unfortunately Jimmy ain’t the best with the intermanets so keep em peeled on the NozL recordings site for that.

Enough talk, turn it up loud and bump it in yo system.

This week’s guest mix comes courtesy of Strand – a Spanish producer based in Brussels who we first discovered… well to be honest I can’t quite remember how we did (I may have drunk a little too much last night). It doesn’t matter though, Strand is dope and we’ve been feeling his music for a while, plus he knows the homies at Serie B so that makes him instantly family round these parts.

Strand has a new album out now via Laid Back and Lowriders. Titled Slam Funk! it features pretty neat artwork from Oli B – who’s done art for Brussels’ Laid Back collective – and some tasty music full of colourful synth melodies and hard hitting rhythms. There’s a bit more info about the album right over here and here’s what Strand had to say about the mix, which is in celebration of the release:

Basically these are the kind of sounds I felt close to when making the new record. It contains old funk from the 70s and 80s (including seminal flamenco-jazz-funk), music from my Lowriders family like Hovatron and Halp, and fellow Brussels citizens like Squeaky Lobster and friends like Glue Kids. It also includes tracks from Tim Exile and John Frusciante that have been a great source of inspiration.

Like the record, this mix is a step into my exploration of black music, a maiden voyage (title of one of my fav Herbie Hancock’s LP) into funk sounds from the 70s and 80s with an un-conservative spirit. Not a look back to the past, but a vision of what today and the future could be like. We are living difficult times and economy is not doing good. The economic forecasts show that the crisis will last for ten years at least: more unemployment, less social services… This is why I believe it is important to make optimistic music and focus on the good things while describing what is currently happening. Funk music is a clear example of that, it allows you to dance and think, and at the same time reflect about the times we live on. At least I feel it that way. SLAM FUNK! is one of many answers.

So there you have it. The mix features a whole bag of Rhythm Inc favourites and acolytes including the homie Glue Kids, Dibiase, Africa Hitech, Elliott Lipp, Pixelord, and Herrmutt Lobby as well as some straight classics like Cybotron’s ‘Clear’. It’s a proper ride and we’re very happy to have Strand take us with him.

For more on the man check out his website where you’ll find links to all his music and the album can be purchased directly via Laid Back’s bandcamp – currently digital only with vinyl coming later in May which you can pre-order.

Massive thanks to Strand for dropping by with this. Bump it in your speakers loud and proud. As always download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to iTunes/RSS and never miss a show.

We’re back next week with more guest mixes and regular shows!

Primus Luta returns for April with another RIPL instalment taking in a fair bit of new and forthcoming music and covering a wide ranging remit from hip hop to blissful electronics and more. You should definitely be used to it by now.

This month sees Primus pay particular attention to the work of Laurel Halo – with no less than four tracks from four different releases and aliases of hers including the forthcoming Hyperdub album, her King Felix alias and the RVGN intl collaboration with Lopatin and others – as well as Japanese experimental artist Koyxen who I wasn’t particularly up on but is definitely on my to check out list now. Alongside this we’ve got new music from Melo-X, Chrissy Murderbot, King Britt, Venetian Snares, Brey, Homeboy Sandman, El-P, Madlib and Georgia Anne Muldrow, Aesop Rock, Matthewdavid, Hawthorne Headhunters, Lone, Hype Williams, Untold, Rumpistol, Darkhouse Family and more. As I said, a sizeable run down of some of the more interesting corners of the music world.

As always you can download and/or stream the show below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feed to receive all shows directly to your computer.

We’re back Friday with a guest mix from Strand to celebrate his new album. Till then, bump and enjoy!

<itunes:summary>This month sees Primus pay particular attention to the work of Laurel Halo - with no less than four tracks from four different releases and aliases of hers including the forthcoming Hyperdub album, her King Felix alias and the RVGN intl collaboration with Lopatin and others - as well as Japanese experimental artist Koyxen who I wasn't particularly up on but is definitely on my to check out list now. Alongside this we've got new music from Melo-X, Chrissy Murderbot, King Britt, Venetian Snares, Brey, Homeboy Sandman, El-P, Madlib and Georgia Anne Muldrow, Aesop Rock, Matthewdavid, Hawthorne Headhunters, Lone, Hype Williams, Untold, Rumpistol, Darkhouse Family and more. As I said, a sizeable run down of some of the more interesting corners of the music world.</itunes:summary>

Our Friends of Friends homies dropped this in the box for the latest in our series. I’ve not had a chance to listen to it yet but based on the tracklist, I’d say it’s once more a perfect fit – Koreless, Pariah, Hype Williams, Four Tet, Objekt and more? We say yes please. Here’s what the man behind it, Pcoat, had to say:

A mix of new and old tunes for all my friends of friends of friends. Recorded while sitting upright (with proper posture, feet placement etc.) at my home in Glassell Park, the mix tells the story of millions of particles of dust falling slowly from the ceiling, passing through a sunbeam, and then ultimately finding home in my lungs. Thank you.

Note the proper posture kids. As always you can stream and/or download below or simply subscribe to the feeds to get all shows directly.

FoF have been busy in the first quarter of the year – a Shlohmo EP, a Tomas Barford EP and more coming including an LP from Tomas. As always their site should be your first port of call for musical inquiries. Stay tuned for the next instalment as always.

With love

Right then we follow up very swiftly from our first #lightbox mix – which Tenaka delivered this past Friday – with the second in the series courtesy of Bantum, who alongside Tenaka was one of the main instigators of the recent Ligthbox tour.

Bantum has put together a 30 mins mix of his own productions for the occasion, showcasing both existing tracks and works in progress. As he puts it:

For this mix I thought I’d include some old tunes, some remixes and some snippets of new tunes I’m currently working on, hopefully for an album. I have included “Slide” and “Gravy” from the Slide and Lay Lay EPs, along with remixes of Irish acts Owensie and Come On Live Long. For the new material I’m working with Margie Lewis and Benni from Irish punk band Logikparty, among others.

Bantum’s blend of electronic music and organic sources and vocals was one of the things that really attracted me to his stuff and which is nicely displayed on here, while the mix also showcases his range in terms of being able to deliver both energetic, driving productions as well as more contemplative numbers.

There is more music from the man – including tracks from the mix – available on both his Soundcloud and Bandcamp. Slide has been a favourite round these parts for a while and we’re looking forward to more from him.

Information and details of the Lightbox tour and how this whole series came about can be found here and look out for the next mix in the series which should be coming shortly (we’re looking at you SertOne, Monto etc…).

For now as always download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feeds to receive each show directly.

Enjoy!

Ok, so this Friday’s guest mix is a little bit special. About a month or so ago I was invited to Ireland as part of the A Boom Bap Continuum talks/project I’ve been working on, and on the sunday I linked up with SertOne – a young Irish producer I’d met as part of the Nihon Kizuna and Finest Ego comps I curated last year. What I originally thought would be a simple chance of catching up and meeting a few more people ended up being a much more fascinating dive into a musical world I wasn’t particularly aware of.

Download Tenaka – Collected (right click and save as)

Long story short – Sert was in Limerick as part of the Lightbox tour, an absolutely fascinating and inspiring initiative by a group of young Irish producers (primarily flirting with hip hop and electronic music) which saw them embark on a tour of the island together having crowdfunded the necessary money to make it happen. In exchange for people’s financial support they offered a variety of freebies – from CDs and goodie bags to workshops and house parties (I mean how awesome is the idea that if you pay X amount to make something like this happen, they’ll all come and play your house party?). The artists featured SertOne, Tenaka, Bantum, Monto, Simon Bird, Lemonada and more with visuals by Feelgoodlost. I ended up spending the evening talking to all the guys and just being blown away by their genuine drive to do something that was not only beneficial to each of them regardless of affiliation or musical inclination but also to the music scene in their country and the fans. And well the music wasn’t half bad either, as everything from beats to ambient and chugging house filled the amazing space of the Twisted Pepper in Limerick and my (slightly Guiness-addled) brain.

You can read more on the Lightbox tour here and I’ll hopefully be wrapping up a piece about it too shortly. In the meantime I did the only logical thing having returned home – I explored the Soundcloud pages of the various artists and started talking to them about a potential series of mixes for the show, which I feel is the perfect occasion to share their work with a wider audience and turn people onto what really feels like a talented generation of producers.

First up in this series is Tenaka who delivered Collected for us a few days ago – a beautifully mesmerising 40 mins mix of his own material which serves as the closest thing to an album of his yet. I’ll let him explain:

“Since my first EP I’ve been close to and scraped 2 albums (one after the ‘Eponymously Titled’ EP and one after the ‘EPhemeral’ EP). ‘Collected’ is a snapshot of those tracks which includes remixes, previously released, unreleased and demos tracks. I took this opportunity to compile them in this mix to serve as a bridge between the EPhemeral EP and the EPoch EP which will be released this summer. I guess this is the closest I’ll get to finishing an album any time soon”

So there you have it. Collected is the first of our #lightbox series and very likely not the last time you’ll be hearing about all of these guys (and more as I keep finding and being recommended new Irish artists I didn’t know of) on Rhythm Inc. For more on Tenaka hit up his Soundcloud where some music can be downloaded as well as his main website.

Next up in the series will be announced shortly.

A huge thank to Tenaka for the time, all the Lightbox guys for their kindness, energy and the music as well as Dara in Galway and the Love Supreme crew in Limerick for bringing me over in the first place.

As always download and/or stream below, or simply subscribe to receive all the shows directly.

Enjoy!
