We round off the summer with our regular podcast, the perfect end to a busy two months that have seen guest mixes from DJ Pain, Vangel, Katzuma, My Dry Wet Mess, Sven Swift, Mr Beatnick, B-Ju and a live set from Draco alongside the regular shows from Primus Luta in the US, Raid System in Tokyo and our goodselves in London. If you missed any of those the show archives are the best place to start.

This month’s show features plenty of forthcoming releases for the autumn as well as some of highlights from the year so far including FaltyDL, Actress, Blundetto, Mount Kimbie, Lorn, Teebs, Blue Daisy, Hint, Skream, Om Unit, Hyperdub, King Midas Sound, Shigeto, Sideshow, Kelpe and many more.

No mini feature as such this month but instead we’ve got two tracks from the latest releases on the A Future Without label, who gave us an exclusive download from Baba Yaga last week in case you missed it, and Exile’s Radio remix project including one from the free album and one from the official AM/FM remix album.

The latest installment of our joint mix series with the Friends of Friends label comes from Barcelona based producer My Dry Wet Mess, who’s the latest signing to Daedelus’ Magical Properties label. The young producer has been popping up on everyone’s radars as of late, and made it onto mine a few days ago (late I know) when Om Unit played me his unofficial remix of Actress’ ‘Maze’ – my mind was suitably blown. With this in mind I’m rather chuffed to have the man drop by for our series with a tasty mix.

Here’s what he had to say on the mix…

I made this mixtape with the same attitude of recording a tape for a trip by car back in the days… when I couldn’t wait to be on the road and play my most recent discoveries to my friends (over and over). So it’s mostly songs I’ve been listening to non stop in the last few days plus a couple of tracks I’ve been working on. MDWM

The man obvioulsy has great musical tastes in line with our own considering half the tracklist has also been on loop in my iPod for the last month or so. Alongside Rhythm Inc favourites like Mweslee, Hud Mo, Mount Kimbie, Dorian Concept, Kan Kick and American Men, the man’s own productions stand out most for me – hinting at what’s to come hopefully.

As with previous mixes in this series the photo was also sourced especially for the occasion by Leeor at FoF, and once more it comes courtesy of Oliver Kish. Massive thanks to Leeor and MDWM for this. Stay tuned for the next episode next month!

Regular listeners and readers will no doubt remember Throwing Snow, who a few months back dropped one of our favourite guest mixes of the year so far here on Rhythm Inc. Aside from making music himself, Ross (as he is known) also co-runs the A Future Without label with Will Plowman. AFW is releasing a series of EPs this month featuring two new additions to the label: Baba Yaga and Memotone alongside Chewy Benson and Daniel Dixon. From dubstep influences to abstract beats, folk to electronica and more, the releases show the breadth of the label and its musical outlook. As an aside check the guest mix Ross did for us if you haven’t yet as it includes plenty of the label’s music.

To celebrate the occasion we’ll be featuring tracks from Baba Yaga and Memotone in this month’s Rhythm Inc show (online next week) and the guys have very kindly given us an exclusive Baba Yaga track to give away. Entitled ‘Effigy’ it’s a mellow affair, straddling hip hop and electronic music effortlessly and perfect for a sunday vibe.

Without a doubt one of the standout artists of the year for me in 2010 is Robot Koch. The German, never-sleeping producer has already dropped a raft of exciting releases via Project Mooncircle and looks set to continue with a new LP entitled ‘Songs for Trees and Cyborgs’ due for release in October on the Mooncircle label.

With this in mind the label has given out a track from the LP for download (see below) featuring Gracelia Maria as well as put up a very exciting Robot Koch vs Boxcutter track for streaming (see embed above). The rest of the LP features the likes of Doshy, 1000names, RQM and Portable Mora all getting the vs treatment alongside 8 new productions. It’s a beast of a release and as always has this crisp sound that for me has become a standard of the man’s productions – they sound big on any system.

Our latest guest mix comes from a long time friend of Rhythm Incursions and Turntable Radio, the German producer and DJ B-Ju. I first discovered and met B in the days of Turntable Radio and scratch forums, when he was one of the most unique and interesting cats to come out of Germany around the early-mid 00s. I still remember his sets as part of the now defunct ITF experimental category as some of the best from that era, and it was no surprise to see him appear in recent years as part of the new school of European producers that are taking the whole electronic hip hop/beats aesthetic into their own hands.

He’s had releases on labels such as Equinox, Dirtybird and more recently Error Broadcast following his earlier years as a turntablist (during which he won a bunch of titles in the DMCs and elsewhere), most of which we’ve featured on the show. He’s currently DJing with his partner in crime Soular all around Germany and working on two new EPs. Check out the latest dates on myspace and exclusive tracks and mixes on Soundcloud.

So as you can gather it’s a real pleasure to have the man drop by for a guest mix. For the occasion he sent a 50 minute selection of black plastic that covers the recent experimentations between dubstep/2step and funky house with people like James Blake, Joy Orbison, Four Tet, SBTRKT, Sepalcure and Hypno and more all represented. It’s definitely right up our alley here at Rhythm Inc towers, with many of these artists featured on the show and in rotation in our players.

Stepping up first as always this month is Primus Luta with RIPL. Slight change this month as he takes the occasion to look over the first half of the year and highlight favourites and must buys. I’ll leave the explaining to him but one eye over the tracklist and you’ll see Rhythm Inc favourites everywhere including All City records, Alpha Pup, Flying Lotus and Brainfeeder, Ghostly and more.

So this month as the summer nears end I decided to do an early reflection on the year and highlight some of the standout work I’ve heard throughout the year. So we’ll call this the RIPL Mid-Year Report with the very special RIPL Mid-Year Awards. Overall the selection gives a good picture of just how much ground is being covered by producers in 2010. With categories ranging from the “Wobble the Bass” award, the “Ultimate Break Beat” and the “Dr. Dre’s Detox” award, well lets just say it’ll put a smile on your face.

All of this in prep to actually do some sort of award thing for the end of the year. If not for the dope music and occasional vibes, check this out to see where my head is about ‘awarding’ the beat scene and fall through with some comments to let me know if there’s awards I got wrong, ones you really like, or ones you think I missed.

We return with a guest mix on this fine monday as our monthly shows for August have been pushed to friday. Next up in our ever growing line up of guests is Vangel, a Canadian producer and DJ who I think I first came across via the work we do on Turntable Radio. Details are hazy but for the last couple of years he’s been on our radar with various releases and collaborations, notably his EP for Scientist’s Equinox records (which we aired last year).

Over the last few months we got talking about a guest spot on the show for which the man came up with ‘In My Rumination’ a mix that fits more than perfectly within the Rhythm Inc cannon. Over 50 minutes Vangel takes you everywhere and back, weaving the likes of DJ Shadow, Four Tet, El-P, Prefuse, Caribou, Battles, Koushik, Thom Yorke and more together alongside some of his own productions. The result is a blissfull ride into music perfect to help get over the monday morning blues.

Depakote, an L.A producer who’ve featured before on the show and the site, has just released his new album for free ahead of a more official release on the Highpoint Lowlife label later next month.

Called ‘The Gummo Album’ it uses the film of the same name as its sampling and thematic center and laces the whole thing up into 19 tracks of straight up boom bap with a couple of personal favourites such as Lylikoranic and Painful Bells.

Our latest freebie mp3 comes courtesy of the lovely people at the Tru Thoughts label who offered us the pick of one track to giveaway from Natural Self’s rather excellent ‘My Heart Beats Remixes and Versions’ EP which drops in two weeks. And considering the quality of the EP it wasn’t an easy choice but we soon settled on a killer flip of the track ‘The Origin’ by Kidkanevil.

Over nine tracks the EP covers a lot of ground and shines light on both Natural Self’s work, with a take on/cover of Radiohead’s ‘Street Spirit’ and a remix of ‘All Static’, and that of the chosen remixers and versioners who take the EP into wide musical territories from space and future beats, courtesy of Kidkanevil, Eliphino and Yult, to lush reggae vibes, courtesy of Prince Fatty (whose remix we featured on the July show by the way).

As I said we chose the Kidkanevil remix for your enjoyment, a dark and brooding number with a serious neck snap to it. You can download it and/or stream it below.
