<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

Our next guest mix for February comes from Manchester’s Danny Drive Thru, a producer/DJ/tablist I first became aware of a year or so ago thanks to the genius of his Virtua Rap bootlegs which saw him redo classic rap bangers in 8bit style with all the rhymes done in text to speech software. If you ain’t heard them yet, here’s Ante Up – definitely one of the funniest.

That Ante Up remix was included in Fat City’s Producer series, and since then Danny’s also done some remix work for fellow Mancunian Sneaky (he of Fingathing fame) – which we aired a while back – and had his music pushed by people including Fulgeance, Kutmah and the Hoya Hoya crew. He’s definitely one of the more interesting producers to come out of the UK in recent years, and the recent stuff he sent us at the tail end of last year should hopefully mean you hear more from him this year. We certainly hope so anyways as there’s some tasty stuff in there.

All of which obviously led us to inquire about a guest mix, which Danny duly delivered over the holidays in the shape of The Story of Our Lives – recorded on two turntables with some effects. The mix encompasses influences you can hear in some of Danny’s work as well as being another cinematic, sonic ride – just what we like then.

As I said you can expect to hear more from Danny this year. I believe the Sneaky remix is getting an official release soon on Sneaky’s remix album and I’d be willing to bet that his name will be appearing on at least a couple of releases before the year is over. We’ll be airing a few more bits of his in coming months too.

For now though head over to the soundcloud page for more music and bump the mix loud – it includes quite a few old Rhythm Inc favourites like Birdy Nam Nam, the 2tall Beautiful Mindz project, Kelpe and Fulgeance. As always you can download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes/newsletter to receive automatic updates and all the shows directly to your computer.

Massive thanks to Danny for taking the time to do this mix. Enjoy!

2tall and I came up with the idea for this mix at the beginning of the year. Ten months on it’s finally unleashed on the world. The idea was simple: showcase a genealogy if you will of the evolution of the hip hop production ethics, especially that classic boom bap sound that characterised a lot of the classic hip hop productions that many of us grew up on. Also we wanted to show that the production revolution had been quietly going on for over ten years, and that while in recent years a lot of the producers have gained in reputation and attention, this was nothing new as such, but had deep roots.

In many ways that approach echoes what Rhythm Incursions stands for to me – I remember talking at length to both Trick and Waxfactor when they started the show 5 years ago, back when their motto was ‘picking up where hip hop stops’. This mix very much reflects this ethos too.

So enough of the words, you can read a full breakdown of why, and how, over on the site we set up for the mix, here.

You can download the artwork on the site too, in high res.

I’m going to post the tracklist here, in case some of you are too lazy to go and check it for yourselves, but be warned – it’s LONG. Or as someone mentioned, a mile long.

Download and stream below, or directly from the website – http://www.aboombapcontinuum.com.

Enjoy, and if you do please pass it along to as many people as you can. We want this heard as far and wide as possible. Thanks to all the artists for the music and inspiration.

<itunes:summary>2tall and I came up with the idea for this mix at the beginning of the year. Ten months on it's finally unleashed on the world.

In many ways that approach echoes what Rhythm Incursions stands for to me - I remember talking at length to both Trick and Waxfactor when they started the show 5 years ago, back when their motto was 'picking up where hip hop stops'. This mix very much reflects this ethos too.

So enough of the words, you can read a full breakdown of why, and how, over on the site we set up for the mix, here.

You can download the artwork on the site too, in high res.

I'm going to post the tracklist here, in case some of you are too lazy to go and check it for yourselves, but be warned - it's LONG. Or as someone mentioned, a mile long.

Download and stream below, or directly from the website - http://www.aboombapcontinuum.com.

Enjoy, and if you do please pass it along to as many people as you can. We want this heard as far and wide as possible. Thanks to all the artists for the music and inspiration.

Regular listeners of the show will remember this one from a few months back when we gave it an inaugural airing on the show: Joker’s ‘Digidesign’ given the treatment by 2tall aka Om Unit. The original has been one of the tracks of the year for many people, and this remix has also received a fair amount of attention in recent months with its slower take on the original, keeping the same energy-driving melodies but flipping them over a hip hop beat to just as much devastating effect as the original.

Well after a few months of being aired exclusively on this show and elsewhere by the lucky few to have a copy, the remix is coming out as a one-sided white label in December. And we have one test press of the release to give out to one lucky winner. You won’t find another free copy anywhere else!

To win a test press copy of Joker ‘Digidesign (Om Unit’s Pop Lock remix)’ all you have to do is answer the following question about Om Unit’s origins. And make sure you fit the conditions too:

What was the name of 2tall’s DJ crew who won the UK DMC teams back in ’03?

Answers and your postal address by email to laurent at spinscience.org.uk with the title ‘Om Unit competition’. You must have an EU address in order to win. Competition closes at midnight on Sunday November 21, 2009. One winner will be chosen at random from the correct answers on Monday November 22 and contacted directly.

If you haven’t heard the track yet you can stream it below. Those of you who miss out on the chance to win this, then all you have to do is head along to your vinyl pusher (digital or physical) to get your hands on a copy, just in time for the end of year consumer rush too!

In related Om Unit release news, his debut EP for Terrorhythm, titled ‘The Corridor’, should be out very soon. And in the new year there will be a 10″ release on the mighty All City records label in Ireland and an exclusive track on the first Fabric curated producer compilation ‘Elevator Music’. Keep em peeled on the soundcloud and myspace pages for more.

Things have been a bit quiet round these parts, as we work away at preparing some exciting shows, but we’ve still got some tricks up our sleeves. First of which is this exclusive mix of the first Original Cultures showcase which took place in Bologna, Italy earlier this year. Featuring the musical talents of Om Unit (aka 2tall), from the UK, Tatsuki, from Japan, and Tayone, from Italy, alongside special guest Bruno Briscik on cello bass, the mix highlights some of the best bits of a 2h30 showcase that was truly unique in many ways.

Why unique I hear you ask? Well because all of the music played on the night (apart from Om Unit’s solo set) was created in the days prior to the showcase in a series of workshops between the 3 artists. They’d never met each other before, barely spoke the same languages (Tayone speaks no English) and communicated primarily through music. In the space of 3 days, and roughly 24 hours of actual workshops, they put together 12 tracks and a one hour showcase. Alongside all this, 3 visual artists from the UK and Italy also worked for 3 days alongside the musicians to create a visual show to compliment the music. The result included live painting, an animation and Chinese-shadow based visual displays, all of which formed an integral part of the showcase alongside the music.

For more information on what happened during the workshops and to listen to a two-part audio documentary from which this mix is taken, check part 1 here and part 2 here. There are also additional mixes from the workshops to download on the Original Cultures site. Also look out for a video documentary at the end of september.

Be sure to check the website for full details and if your curiosity has been piqued than check this exclusive mix and look out for a full digital release of the entire audio from the showcase later this year.

As promised we round off July (just in time too) with another 80 mins of fresh new music, exclusives and all that good stuff. Summer is generally a quiet time for music, but it’s fair to say that this year is a bit of an exception with quite a few releases worthy of your attention that have either just come out, are about to or will be out once summer ends (that last part not applying to anyone London obviously, as summer seems to have already ended).

In no specific order we’ve got new music Blue Daisy, Foreign Beggarz, Poirier and Face-T, Shackleton, Shortstuff, Floating Points, DJ Buzz, Disrupt, Elaquent, Tranqill, XLII, Nosaj Thing, Lorn, Guilty Simpson, Fulgeance and more.

Having realised that the last few mini features have all been about west coast producers (without meaning to) this month we turn our attention to Europe, and Austria in particular with 5 tracks from the young producer Dorian Concept – a man who’s been a pleasure to discover and follow with a truly unique take on the whole beat/electronic hip hop thing, backed by some of the most ridiculously exhilarating synth melodies. Peep this really good interview with the man by On-Point for further proof/explanation. The 5 tracks span Dorian’s short but fairly intense discography so far.

So that’s about it for July, stay tuned for more guest mixes in August as well as the regular show, sometime towards the end of the month. For now though, sit back, relax and enjoy!

Since leaving Japan last year I’ve been working on a project to try and bridge the gap between the art scenes in Japan and Europe. At first I was looking at the music scene, as this is the area I’ve spent the most time working on for the last 7 odd years. The project started taking shape when I was in Italy, it evolved and now it is officially launched. I am very proud and happy to introduce to you Original Cultures: a non-profit project that aims to facilitate and promote cultural exchange between Japan and European countries through the medium of modern performing arts.

The countries currently involved in the project are the UK, Italy and Japan, and the performing arts fields are music and visual arts (painting, street art etc…). The project will hold its first event, our pilot, in the first week of June in Bologna, Italy, from June 3 to 6. Six artists will take part in the pilot, representing each country and taking part in a variety of activities including workshops, seminars, a live showcase and an art installation at the Bologna Music Museum. The artists are: Will Barras (UK), Ericailcane (IT), DEM (IT), 2tall / Om Unit (UK), Tayone (IT), and Tatsuki (JP).

You can view a trailer for the pilot below:

We’ve been quieter than usual this month, but that hasn’t stopped music coming in by the bucket load into our inbox. 2009 already started on a high (see last month’s podcast for more on that) and it’s not showing any signs of stopping with labels and artists gearing up for the first quarter of the year with a lot of interesting projects and releases.

As with January, this month’s show comes with just 2 days left in the month but we reckon the wait’s been worth it. We’ve got lots of new stuff and a few bonus, exclusive treats too. We have new material from Robert Logan, Equinox Records, Bullion, 1000 Names, Mr Scruff, Yppah, Two Fingers, Computer Jay, Uncle Lew, Mr Beatnick and more. And we’ve also got a mini feature on the Warp label, who are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year with a string of releases including a new Prefuse 73 album and quite a few more which are yet to be officially announced.

So strap up and get comfy for 70 minutes of audio goodness. And stay tuned as March will see the return of fellow presenter Dday One and a few guest mixes including one from Parisian producer Onra and more to be announced soon.

Enjoy!

A deep space transmission reached us at Rhythm Incursions this week, coming from somewhere familiar and signed by none other than 2tall, universal astronaut, extended Rhythm Inc family member and producer at large. The sounds of the transmission are warm and comforting, much needed in these cold and snowy times.

Right then. You might have been wondering when the hell this mix was going to be online, and rightly too considering we announced it a while back. In the end, with life and other fun things getting in the way we decided to hold it back until the festivities were starting, kind of like a virtual serving of extra stuffing. And being that it’s the season of over indulging and excess, this month’s show is a best of 08 mix special: no talking, just 70 mins of some of the best and our favouritest music of the year. Whether you’re enjoying the festivities with the family, alone or with friends, away or at home, at work or on holiday (I did work last on xmas day so I know it’s not an impossibility, big up those who are!) we hope you enjoy our last show of the year.

Not only does this show include some of our favourite singles and album tracks from 2008, it also comes with a xmas-sized mini feature looking at the ouput of the Hyperdub label, which gets label of the year by a long mile, regardless of genre.

2008 has definitely been an interesting year musically to say the least. Trick remarked earlier on in the month that album wise it hasn’t been an exceptional year, which I’d have to agree with to an extent. A few albums do stand out, like say The Bug’s ‘London Zoo,’ and between putting this mix together and doing the obligatory end of year list thing over on my blog I’ve come to the realisation that this year it’s much more singles, EPs and certain album tracks that stand out for me. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing either.

This end of year special podcast reflects all of this with tracks from some of the year’s stand out albums, singles, EPs, and even a couple of unreleased numbers that have created quite a lot of interest on and offline. This show is also definitely a bit of a who’s who of the artists and the labels that have populated our tracklists on the regular since Rhythm Incursions moved to its podcast-only format back in June, with the likes of Nosaj Thing, Flying Lotus, Kode 9, Maga Bo, The Bug, J Dilla and more.

Another thing reflected in the mix is the return of the producer to the front in certain corners of the hip hop world (see explosion of interest around Flying Lotus for proof of that) and how this return has been distinctively led by a more awkward and experimental approach to instrumental tracks, also echoed in the work of certain producers affiliated with the dubstep, grime and other electronic scenes. While far from encompassing everything that happened this year, these two musical ‘tendencies’ have definitely had a big impact on fans, producers and DJs alike.

So that’s about it. We’re officially done for 08. Massive thanks to you the listeners for your continued support and a big big shout to the entire Rhythm Incursions clique: Mr Trick, Waxfactor, Carlo, Joey Beats, Dday One and the extended fam. Also a big thank you to all the artists and labels who have supported the show this year through their music and guest appearances.

Look out for more of the same in 2009, as we roll out some very tasty guest mixes and new shows from all the regulars in January (who knows Waxfactor might even come out of his hiding lair). If you’re new to the show then be sure to check our archives and the feed where you can find all the previous shows available for download (and there’s been some corkers this year).

And finally if you’re still feeling somewhat hungry or are looking for something else to get stuck into, then check out Turntable Radio’s own festive offering, which is none other than the entire Season’s Beatings series of festive mixes. These went live at the same time as this mix, so get stuck in yo!

See you in 2009.

Peace

<itunes:summary>Right then. You might have been wondering when the hell this mix was going to be online, and rightly too considering we announced it a while back. In the end, with life and other fun things getting in the way we decided to hold it back until the festivities were starting, kind of like a virtual serving of extra stuffing. And being that it's the season of over indulging and excess, this month's show is a best of 08 mix special: no talking, just 70 mins of some of the best and our favouritest music of the year. Whether you're enjoying the festivities with the family, alone or with friends, away or at home, at work or on holiday (I did work last on xmas day so I know it's not an impossibility, big up those who are!) we hope you enjoy our last show of the year.

Trick remarked earlier on in the month that album wise it hasn't been an exceptional year, which I'd have to agree with to an extent. A few albums do stand out, like say The Bug's 'London Zoo,' and between putting this mix together and doing the obligatory end of year list thing over on my blog I've come to the realisation that this year it's much more singles, EPs and certain album tracks that stand out for me. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing either.

This end of year special podcast reflects all of this with tracks from some of the year's stand out albums, singles, EPs, and even a couple of unreleased numbers that have created quite a lot of interest on and offline. This show is also definitely a bit of a who's who of the artists and the labels that have populated our tracklists on the regular since Rhythm Incursions moved to its podcast-only format back in June, with the likes of Nosaj Thing, Flying Lotus, Kode 9, Maga Bo, The Bug, J Dilla and more.

While far from encompassing everything that happened this year, these two musical 'tendencies' have definitely had a big impact on fans, producers and DJs alike.

So that's about it. We're officially done for 08.

If you're new to the show then be sure to check our archives and the feed where you can find all the previous shows available for download (and there's been some corkers this year).

And finally if you're still feeling somewhat hungry or are looking for something else to get stuck into, then check out Turntable Radio's own festive offering, which is none other than the entire Season's Beatings series of festive mixes. These went live at the same time as this mix, so get stuck in yo!

See you in 2009.

Peace

Laurent
