Rhythm Incursions – Best of 09 pt 2
December 24, 2009 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent
We wrap up 2009 with part 2 of our ‘best of’ mix. This is the last show of the year and continues to run down some of our favourite tracks from the last 12 months.
The mix starts with our second ‘Labels of 09′ mini feature looking at Ramp Recordings, a label that for me has had an incredible year and put out good music, consistently without worrying about scenes, genres and things like that. Doing eclectic isn’t necessarily hard though, doing it well however is and for me Ramp is one of those labels who managed to do just that: serve up a truly eclectic mix of releases, artists and styles and do so with a cohesion, quality control and consistency that only makes the music shine that much more. Add to this some quality artwork and an ear for snapping up producers that are bubbling under, like FaltyDL, Shortstuff or Tokimonsta, and you have a label which you need to make time for if you haven’t yet.
As I said they’ve had a rather busy year with something close to ten or so releases so I’ve managed to fit as much as I can in this mini feature with pretty much one track from every release this year, bar one or two. If you like what you hear then check the website and catch up with some seriously good music.
Elsewhere part 2 of the best of 09 features music from the likes of Darkstar, Peverelist, Joker, Dorian Concept, Daedelus, Clutchy Hopkins, Soundspecies, Mount Kimbie, Hudson Mohawke, Floating Points, Machinedrum, Poirier, Blue Daisy, Jamie Vex’d, Quarta330 and many more.
As usual tracklist and download links below. And if you haven’t yet may we suggest you sign up to the newsletter, RSS feed or iTunes feed and this way you’ll never miss a show.
So that’s it for 2009, and the first decade of this century/millenium. Many thanks to all our listeners, all the labels and artists we’ve worked with and who’ve supported us, all our guests, our extended family, DDay One, Mr Trick, 2tall and everyone else. It’s been a great year and here’s to 2010!
Peace

Rhythm Incursions – October 09
November 5, 2009 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent

Despite it being nearly one week into November, we’re bringing you the October show which suffered the delaying combo of both my laptop dying and a rather nasty cold hitting me in the same week. The show was actually wrapped 2 weeks ago but we couldn’t get it out till now. Lucky you though, as you’ll be getting another show in a few weeks with our November edition.
I realised as I was putting the tracklist together that for some reason this month features a rather high number of freely available tracks. This is in part a reflection of my own listening habits (and the fact I spend way too much time on the internet) but also I think of the move by artists and labels to make more music available freely as a way to promote paying releases, gigs and other merchandise. Lastly I would also say that the increasing number of free tracks in our playlists this year is a reflection of the increase in quality in free music. Whereas before free tracks where often throwaway material, today an increasing number of artists are releasing bootlegs, remixes and their own tracks for free and keeping a high quality control on it. Again I think this is something that plays into the aforementioned ‘free music as promotion’ vehicle. All the artists with a freely available track in this month’s show also have physical, paying releases and quite a few are actually established artists in their own ‘scenes’.
What about the music though? This month we take in a rather wide range of music, reflecting the diversity of what’s been trickling into our inbox/hands. From the psychedelic meets Afghani traditional music of Ariana Delawari to straight beats (and some incredible flips) from KenLo, fLako, Fulgeance and Dibiase via tribal house vibes from Blue Daisy, 21st century boogie from Dam Funk, hard-hitting hip hop from Kids in Tracksuits and Mr Lif and forward-thinking productions from Om Unit, Mike Slott and Talen. And that’s only part of it, there’s more and it’s all high quality as far as I’m concerned.
This month’s mini-feature is a tie-in with the 5th anniversary of the Hyperdub label. Headed by Kode 9, Hyperdub has long been a favourite at Rhythm Inc, with Trick regularly playing the label’s early releases as both the show and label share roughly the same birthdays. To celebrate their anniversary Hyperdub have curated an incredible compilation, called ’5′, spanning two CDs or 5 12″s and featuring classic material from the label’s archive, unreleased one-offs and 15 or so brand new productions from the label’s artists and friends including names like Flying Lotus, Mala, Martin, Samiyam, Ikonika, Quarta330, and more. It’s fair to say that ’5′ is the final nail in the coffin for lesser labels, if it was even needed, that shows just how influential and forward thinking Hyperdub has been as an independent over the years. From its humble beginnings to its current wide palette of sounds, Hyperdub continues to do what everyone least expects, and that’s just one of many reasons why we love them and their music. For the feature we’ve got four tracks from the compilation taking in The Bug under his King Midas Sound alias, Mala, Kode 9 and Samiyam – music as different as it comes and yet somehow logically intertwined.
So enough with the words, sit back and crank the volume for 2h of the latest and freshest music. And stay tuned for some special shows coming up in the month. For now enjoy!

Reason or Romanza – Sunflower
It’s friday and, despite the fact that we’ve been putting up free tracks rather randomly up until now, it’s time for another free download. This week’s freebie comes courtesy of the nice people over at the Civil Music label, UK home to the likes of Debruit, Rusko, Kotchy, Starkey and Drums of Death, and their latest signing: Reason or Romanza. Not the easiest name to roll off the tongue, which is lucky considering we’re primarily bothered about their music.
What’s more we’ve got more than just one free track for your listening pleasure. Read on to find out more.
Reason or Romanza (let’s call them RoR from now on) will be releasing their debut EP on the label, titled ‘EP1′, in early November. ‘EP1′ boasts four tracks from the duo, firmly rooted in the electronica and instrumental hip hop/beats styles that have cemented themselves over the last few years, and four remixes which take the originals into much further territories, touching on dubstep, minimal techno and even tribal house rhythms.
Here’s what the press blurb has to say:
Sitting firmly between Soulful Electronica and Forward-Thinking Soundscapes these two south-end on sea beat collaborators have found new pastures in the fields between Four tet and Flying Lotus. Reason or Romanza have buckets of credits to their ever growing name, they won the ‘best music’ award at the Intel short film awards for the soundtrack to Mahalia Belo’s film ‘Silent Music’, they’ve been getting regular plays across the airways from excited Beat junkies through to Classic fm, Run the London’s Superdisco night and also held residency at Multivitamins minimal/electronica nights in East London. Reason and Romanza have provided remixes for Cheju (Boltfish Recordings) and Kirmann (Lobe Recordings, Lona, Records), with more in the works and now with their debut on civil music, they have been lent a hand with remixes by luminaries from all strains of electronic music – Loaf Recordings top boy Vincent Oliver, Planet Mu’s Skweee legend Eero Johannes, Black Arce’s spacey dub new boy Blue Daisy, eclectic Finnish producer Recue and Electronic legends Posthuman. Four equally eclectic remix’s from the new masters of their respective sounds…
Civil Music are very nicely letting us giveaway ‘Sunflower’, which you can download or stream below, a spacey, electronic number perfect for the current autumn vibes. And you’ll be able to check out the Blue Daisy remix of ‘Seven Uses of Potential Difference’ which is by far my favourite on the release, taking the track deep into tribal territories without sounding cheesy.
And on top of this, they’ve also given us three exclusive remixes of tracks from the release (which we assume didn’t make the final cut). These come from Vincent Oliver (Lo Recordings), Loose Fit (Allez Allez) and Posthuman (Seed, Warp). These 3 exclusive remixes can be downloaded as a zip on the link below. They include two remixes of ‘Seven Uses of Potential Difference’ and one remix of ‘Two Times, Three Times’.

You can pre-order ‘EP1′ from Civil Music directly here, or look out for it to land in your local shop or favourite online spot in the first week of November.
Big thanks to Civil for the hook up and look out for more from these guys including a new EP from Debruit.

Rhythm Incursions July 09 pt2
July 31, 2009 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent

As promised we round off July (just in time too) with another 80 mins of fresh new music, exclusives and all that good stuff. Summer is generally a quiet time for music, but it’s fair to say that this year is a bit of an exception with quite a few releases worthy of your attention that have either just come out, are about to or will be out once summer ends (that last part not applying to anyone London obviously, as summer seems to have already ended).
In no specific order we’ve got new music Blue Daisy, Foreign Beggarz, Poirier and Face-T, Shackleton, Shortstuff, Floating Points, DJ Buzz, Disrupt, Elaquent, Tranqill, XLII, Nosaj Thing, Lorn, Guilty Simpson, Fulgeance and more.
Having realised that the last few mini features have all been about west coast producers (without meaning to) this month we turn our attention to Europe, and Austria in particular with 5 tracks from the young producer Dorian Concept – a man who’s been a pleasure to discover and follow with a truly unique take on the whole beat/electronic hip hop thing, backed by some of the most ridiculously exhilarating synth melodies. Peep this really good interview with the man by On-Point for further proof/explanation. The 5 tracks span Dorian’s short but fairly intense discography so far.
So that’s about it for July, stay tuned for more guest mixes in August as well as the regular show, sometime towards the end of the month. For now though, sit back, relax and enjoy!
