We return to L.A. for our latest guest mix. Depakote is a producer who got in touch with us after we’d posted about the Sun Ra beat tape a few months ago. He was one of the producers on said beat tape and he sent us links to a bunch of his freely available beat tapes/albums. I liked what I heard and we got chatting. One thing leading to another he sent me a preview of his forthcoming album and I asked him for a guest mix.

Fast forward a couple of months and the mix is here, put together by his friend The Samurai and featuring music from Depakote himself as well as friends in and around L.A. As the attention continues to build on the Californian city and its bubbling electronic and hip hop scenes this mix provides a perfect snapshot of what many of the city’s upcoming producers are up to.

Depakote will be releasing his debut album on the Hightpoint Lowlife label in the near future, entitled ‘It’s not 94 anymore’. Having had the pleasure of checking a preview of it I must say it’s a rather nice release, a real slice of modern L.A. boom bap that fits perfectly within the city’s recent, and incredibly varied, hip hop output.
