For the 13th instalment of our Friends of Friends mix series we had a bit of a synchronous moment when both Leeor (who runs FoF) and myself suggested a retrospective mix of the label’s expanding catalogue. And seeing as how I’d opened the series back in March last year, Leeor asked if I’d be up for doing the retrospective, an offer I couldn’t really refuse (and no horse heads were involved either).

Going through the label’s catalogue and putting this together was a lot of fun. It also made me think a lot about this idea of friends which the label is based on. This year has taught me a lot about bonds of friendship and their importance. From my time in Japan during the March 11th earthquake to various other musical projects like Original Cultures and the Finest Ego compilation, 2011 has been the year of friendship for me in many ways. So when Leeor and I discussed the next episode of the Friends of Friends mix series, it felt almost normal that we would both suggest a retrospective look at the expanding FoF catalogue – after all we became friends because of the label. ’What Friends Are For’ celebrates the label, its musicians and their friends. I hope you enjoy it just as much as I did putting it together. It’s such a pleasure to work with these guys and I know that the day we finally meet will be a good one. Enjoy!

Primus Luta returns for June with a little special edition of his regular RIPL show – taking it back a bit with a selection of favourite jams from the past. Here’s what he had to say on the subject:

Throwback edition. No real theme to it, just a bunch of joints I ain’t played in years, but in typical RIPL fashion, covering spectrums of sound. I mean where else but RIPL are ya gonna get Kool Kieth and Delia Derbyshire? Mad Professor and Richard Devine? Cool Breeze and Bjork? Dedicated to the artist continuing to push the sound barriers forward, just a reminder, history is on your side.

For those of you not up on some of these artists this works as a great way to discover some amazing music you may have missed over the years, and for those of you more familiar with the tracklist this should make for a perfect trip down memory lane.

So with a little delay here comes the February podcast from my good self, aptly retitled to March pt.1 – expect another show end of month as usual. With the shorter amount of days last month and relentless work I’ve had to finish before my upcoming trip (more on that soon) it just wasn’t possible to get the show done in time without rushing it. Add to this the fact that this instalment is a seriously heavy affair and I felt it was only right to take a few more days and give you something worthwhile.

Putting the tracklist together I’ve just realised that out of 41 tracks in this show, 34 are forthcoming – a good reflection of the quality and amount of good music we’ve been privileged to receive in the inbox. And there were another 10 odd tracks I wanted to include. This month’s show is also a reflection of labels we’re feeling this year. Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus’ musical child, is the subject of our mini feature with new music from Mono/Poly, Taylor McFerrin, Matthewdavid and Jerimiah Jae covering the spectrum from blunted beats to smooth, modern jazz. And then we’ve also got the Friends of Friends label (close friends of ours) represented with 3 tracks from upcoming releases by Shlomho, Groundislava and Mexicans with Guns, our other good friends at Project Mooncircle are featured with two recent releases from Robot Koch & John Robinson and Long Arm and then there’s Car Crash Set who’ve sent us new music from Pixelord and John Lemmon (awesome name btw).

Our next guest mix for February comes from Manchester’s Danny Drive Thru, a producer/DJ/tablist I first became aware of a year or so ago thanks to the genius of his Virtua Rap bootlegs which saw him redo classic rap bangers in 8bit style with all the rhymes done in text to speech software. If you ain’t heard them yet, here’s Ante Up – definitely one of the funniest.

That Ante Up remix was included in Fat City’s Producer series, and since then Danny’s also done some remix work for fellow Mancunian Sneaky (he of Fingathing fame) – which we aired a while back – and had his music pushed by people including Fulgeance, Kutmah and the Hoya Hoya crew. He’s definitely one of the more interesting producers to come out of the UK in recent years, and the recent stuff he sent us at the tail end of last year should hopefully mean you hear more from him this year. We certainly hope so anyways as there’s some tasty stuff in there.

All of which obviously led us to inquire about a guest mix, which Danny duly delivered over the holidays in the shape of The Story of Our Lives – recorded on two turntables with some effects. The mix encompasses influences you can hear in some of Danny’s work as well as being another cinematic, sonic ride – just what we like then.

As I said you can expect to hear more from Danny this year. I believe the Sneaky remix is getting an official release soon on Sneaky’s remix album and I’d be willing to bet that his name will be appearing on at least a couple of releases before the year is over. We’ll be airing a few more bits of his in coming months too.

Just over 3 years ago when I first started helping Mr Trick with Rhythm Incursions we aired a guest mix from Germany’s Snatchatec called Indigo – a mix CD the man had self-released. Snatchatec was a long time collaborator and friend of DJ Scientist, who runs Equinox records. Together they did a project called the Dedicated Beatheads in 2007, which we aired on Turntable Radio. Our own long standing relationship with Scientist is how the hook up for Indigo came to happen. The mix proved one of our more popular mixes in 2008, and was a perfect example of Snatchatec’s deft mixing and scratching and ear for cinematic selections.

Sometime towards the end of last year Snatchatec got in touch again to say he’d done a follow up to Indigo and would we be up for airing it – the answer to which was of course yes. In that time, he’s continued to work with Scientist and Equinox records, with whom he’s toured and recorded, as well as his own Deckpackers project. Most notably he provided a remix for Scientist and Ceschi’s Same Old Love Song 12″ release in 2009.

So ladies and gents to kick start February we’re very happy to bring you Indigo pt.2 – another hour long ride into the finest beats and productions of recent years, with a truly cinematic feel that’s hard to resist. The mix features plenty of producers who have long been friends and favourites of ours here at Rhythm Inc towers, from Sixtoo and former presenter Joey Beats to Maker, Ooah, edIT, Scientist, 2econd Class Citizen and Mochipet.

Sometimes life gets in the way, especially when like us here at Rhythm Incursions you do something for the love out of your own time. Last month both Primus Luta and myself had to cancel our regular shows due to various life stuff getting in the way – in his case a recent trip to Seattle for the Decibel festival and some rehearsals for his new CSS show (remember the debut mix here for download). We roll into the autumn with the first of our regular shows, presented as always by Primus Luta from the U.S East Coast. This month’s RIPL show takes in a raft of new, forthcoming and recent releases from many of our favourites labels and artists including Shed, Terror Danjah, Planet Mu, R&S, Pariah, Jahcoozi, Lorn, Swede:art, Dibiase, TAKE and more.

Of particular interest are two forthcoming releases on R&S from Model 500 and Pariah as well as forthcoming releases on Project Mooncircle from Robot Koch and Pavel Dovgal (who are both guest mixing on Rhythm Inc in coming weeks). That’s not all though as Primus also fits in tasty new bits from Eskmo, Wrongtom and Roots Manuva, ill.gates, Maddslinky, F and Sideshow.

The latest installment of our joint mix series with the Friends of Friends label comes from Barcelona based producer My Dry Wet Mess, who’s the latest signing to Daedelus’ Magical Properties label. The young producer has been popping up on everyone’s radars as of late, and made it onto mine a few days ago (late I know) when Om Unit played me his unofficial remix of Actress’ ‘Maze’ – my mind was suitably blown. With this in mind I’m rather chuffed to have the man drop by for our series with a tasty mix.

Here’s what he had to say on the mix…

I made this mixtape with the same attitude of recording a tape for a trip by car back in the days… when I couldn’t wait to be on the road and play my most recent discoveries to my friends (over and over). So it’s mostly songs I’ve been listening to non stop in the last few days plus a couple of tracks I’ve been working on. MDWM

The man obvioulsy has great musical tastes in line with our own considering half the tracklist has also been on loop in my iPod for the last month or so. Alongside Rhythm Inc favourites like Mweslee, Hud Mo, Mount Kimbie, Dorian Concept, Kan Kick and American Men, the man’s own productions stand out most for me – hinting at what’s to come hopefully.

As with previous mixes in this series the photo was also sourced especially for the occasion by Leeor at FoF, and once more it comes courtesy of Oliver Kish. Massive thanks to Leeor and MDWM for this. Stay tuned for the next episode next month!
