<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

We start a new guest mix series this week brought to you by our Tokyo family, Raid System. A month or so ago Broken Haze, who heads Raid System in Tokyo, started a new series of guest mixes featuring artists they’re fans of and/or work with. Somehow it took two of those mixes before him and I thought about adding the series to Rhythm Incursions. We’ve now remedied that and so this week and next we’ll bring you the first two mixes (which have been available for a few weeks) and from now on all Raid System guest mixes will also go out on the Rhythm Incursions feed.

For the first in the series Raid System got Spain’s Nino to step up with a short half hour mix. Following his release on Donky Pitch earlier this year, Nino has been a name to watch for sure. Much like Mweslee before him and other young Spanish producers like No Aipre, Nino brings forth a funky production sound that is quite often irresistible. On this mix he brings together quite a few of our favourites of recent times for a perfect uplifting session.

Be sure to check Nino’s soundcloud for more on the man and go cop the Donky Pitch EP if you haven’t yet. As always you can stream and/or download below or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes feeds and never miss a show.

Next up is a guest mix from eLan as well as the last of our TSOM mixes from KEIZOmachine and Duct.

So a while back the promo for the new Sexual Harrassment remix EP on Citinite dropped in our inbox. This four track EP features the likes of Dam Funk, Sweat X and Jimmy Edgar taking on Sexual Harrassment – a short lived funk/punk group from the 80s whose subject matter was raunchy and makes for amazing material for the remixes. We loved it. So when Citinite got in touch about airing a Spoek Mathambo (one half of Sweat X) mix themed around the group it was a no brainer. After all the emotions we’ve been through here recently in Japan we all need some good old fashioned fun.

What follows is a dope mix featuring the likes of Kraftwerk, Grace Jones, Timbaland, Too Short, Wiley, Sun Ra alongside Jimmy Edgar, Rashad, Magic Mike, Sweat.X and more. Just looking at the tracklist makes you sweat.

As always simply click below to download and/or stream the mix. Or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes/email and get the good stuff in your inbox/reader automatically.

A big thanks to Citinite for this one. Check their blog for more buy links for the digital of the EP, it’s out this week.
For now though grab a member of the opposite sex, crank it up and get sweaty.

And so the end of year arrives and with it our last show of 2010. The last of our end of year shows, this one follows the 2009 best of mix I did last year though instead of spreading across two shows I tried to squeeze all I could into one session. Make no mistake, despite the naysayers and the doom and gloom surrounding the music industry in general, for me 2010 has been a rather good year music wise. On one side there’s seemingly more music than ever, and with that comes a certain lack of quality control. On the other, this lack of quality control and breakdown of the traditional models within the industry has I believe given various labels and artists in the ‘underground’ a lot more potential for flourishing. As the old saying goes, you’ve just got to look closer to find the gold among all the noise.

I originally had 160 odd tracks earmarked for this show. A couple of days of ruminating and trying things out and I managed to keep it down to 60 or so, as well as the mini feature on All City Records, my label of the year (as you should know by now – they did two guest mixes for us earlier this month). In the process of putting the mix together it first occurred to me that if you consider the amount of music I received this year for the show (at a guess I’d say 500 odd releases, maybe even more) then there really is a big job of sifting through everything to find the stuff that’s actually worthy of a best of mix. Even then I had to leave stuff out that I wished could have been fitted. The criteria (if you will) was a mix of what I’d played on the show in the last 12 months and which I considered to be well above par, as well as tracks that have been staples in my DJ sets and tracks from albums that have barely left my portable player all year. The result is the following tracklist. Apologies to those I missed, but if anything it’s the perfect excuse for you to go over all the shows we’ve put out in the last year (hint hint). I also tried to avoid too much duplication with the previous two end of year shows from Primus Luta and Raid System.

So that’s it for 2010, another year under the belt and onwards. Rhythm Incursions has seen a lot of changes this year – new website, new presenters, new regular guest series. It’s been an absolute blast, and I want to thank everyone who’s made the show what it is and who works out of their own time towards continuing to make this one of the finer podcast series out there. In no specific order much love and thanks to Primus Luta, XLII, Broken Haze, Dday One and Leeor at FoF for their work. A big thank you as well to all the labels, artists and PR who send us stuff and take time to talk to us, sometimes even bowing to our pressures for guest spots. Among them (too many to mention) special thanks to Olan at All City, Gordon at Mooncircle, Marcus at Planet Mu & Hyperdub, Flip at Error Broadcast, Melissa at Tailored, the Outpost, Alex Nut and Alex Chase. Lastly big thanks to my close friends and inspirations Om Unit and Vinilificio.

Right then, enough of the chatter. I’ll let you enjoy the mix. It’s roughly 2h15, with the first 2 hours taken by the mix and the last 15 minutes the All City records megamix celebrating some of their releases from 2010. I was intent on doing a proper megamix of all the releases, but just couldn’t due to time and other engagements. Still this should give you the last push to check their stuff if you haven’t yet. No talking, all mixing and music!

As always stream and/or download below, or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes/email. The playlist is so long I can’t find the energy of linking all the labels/websites this time so PLEASE if you like what you hear than check the playlist and go out there and support the artists and the music. You can browse all available shows by artists on this page, and all previous shows have full, linked tracklists.

Love and blessings, see you in 2011!

All City return with the 7th instalment of their L.A 10×10 series, this time featuring Computer Jay and Dam Funk – two of L.A’s funkiest providers. As a bonus Om Unit made a dub of one of the Computer Jay tracks, ‘The Phantom’, which the label is giving away for free to promote the release (see below). Having heard this dub a few weeks ago when Om Unit was working on it we can tell you it’s a Rhythm Inc towers favourite and the perfect taster for what is yet another solid release from the Irish label.

The 10″ is out now, with 5 track – 2 from Dam Funk and 3 from Computer Jay. As always the legendary B+ provides the photo for the cover. You can buy the release here. And if you missed any of the other 10×10 releases catch them all here like Pokemon – so far they’ve featured Daedelus, Teebs, Dibiase, GB, Carlos Y Gaby, Take, Matthewdavid and more. You know this is going to be as essential a collection as the 7×7 series from 2008.

You can also preview a lot of these releases and follow All City on soundcloud. Om Unit also lives here on the internets with a shiny new site full of goodies and news. His Corridor EP is finally officially out, so go cop that if you haven’t yet.

For now though, stream and/or download Om Unit’s dub of Computer Jay below. Crank up and enjoy! Oh and look out for more Om Unit remixes on All City in the very near future.

The Friends of Friends mix series returns this month after a gap in September, this time packing 30 minutes of heat from Cardiff courtesy of the Darkhouse Family.

For those of you new to the series, it’s a curation of guest mixes by the FoF label and our good selves showcasing fresh new talent from around the world who happened to be friends of the label or ourselves. So far we’ve had the likes of My Dry Wet Mess, Sven Swift, Asura and myself on the mix, and this month’s mix was curated by ourselves as the FoF work machine is in full effect following the recent release of their third split EP, featuring Robot Koch and Mexicans With Guns. That EP is out now and you can check tracks from it in recent shows too.

Onto this month’s guest mix. Darkhouse Family is a production duo from Cardiff who I came across this summer thanks to Om Unit and the Hoya:Hoya family in Manchester. The beats I heard definitely caught my ear and we soon got chatting leading me to ask for a guest mix. The guys have been slowly garnering attention, with an EP on Fat City earlier this year and shows in the UK and more recently in Amsterdam for Viral Radio. I’ll let them do the introductions though:

Darkhouse Family is the product of many smokey studio hours shared by Don Leisure & Metabeats… Linking up in late 2007 the duo gelled quickly over a shared musical heritage of hiphop and uk club culture and a loose beat tape project began to grow. This later turned into DHF after the old chopped up soul sample sound was replaced by a more synthed out, smoked out & synthetic sound that the group is known for… The Family Trees EP on Fat City Recordings put Darkhouse on the map with solid DJ support from Martyn, The Gaslamp Killer, Alex Nut, Illum Sphere, Kutmah, Dibiase & more.

This mix is just a collection of some new stuff we’ve been sent and are feeling and some of our latest beats also. One of the loose ideas of the mix was to showcase a bunch of new producers who are making dope tracks who may not be household names to everyone.

We are planning an LP in 2011 but will release some more material on Fat City hopefully this year and also undertake some remix work for Frite Nite and Jon Wayne. Don Leisure also has some solo project work on the bubble and Metabeats is set to release his 2nd LP on associated minds and also continues to shake skirts with his CRST project.

So there you have it. Ladies and gents the Darkhouse Family, a name you want to keep in your memory banks for the future and this short but very sweet guest mix will hopefully only make you want to go out and cop the EP as well as check them live. They have a show with Martyn in Cardiff this Thursday.

As always with our FoF series the photo for this session was sourced by the label, once more it’s Oliver Kish who delivers the goods.

Onto the mix though, stream and/or download below. If you like what you hear show some love and stay tuned for the next instalment in the series. Until then pump that in your 4×4!

Ladies and gents the Darkhouse Family, a name you want to keep in your memory banks for the future and this short but very sweet guest mix will hopefully only make you want to go out and cop the EP as well as check them live. They have a show with Martyn in Cardiff this Thursday.

As always with our FoF series the photo for this session was sourced by the label, once more it's Oliver Kish who delivers the goods.

Onto the mix though, stream and/or download below. If you like what you hear show some love and stay tuned for the next instalment in the series. Until then pump that in your 4x4!

We finish September with our usual podcast, bringing you once more a 2-hour fill of fresh new music for your ears.

It’s been a rather busy summer for us here in the UK, and the new show reflects that – no mini feature this month as I instead wanted to focus on all the new music I’ve received over the summer, not least following my recent trip to Hoya:Hoya in Manchester at the end of August alongside Lorn and Om Unit.

Up this month we have new and exclusive bits from the likes of Mochilla, Lazer Sword, Computer Jay, Brey, My Dry Wet Mess, Letherette, Teebs, Pariah, The Gaslamp Killer, Krystal Klear, Peverelist, Zed Bias, Take, The Bug (remixed by Autechre!), Slugabed, Offshore, Floating Points Ensemble and many more. Alongside this are some recent favourite bits from Om Unit, Rudi Zygadlo, Sneaky, Darkhouse Family, Themselves, Wrongtom and Aardvark among others.

It’s a busy two hours so without further ado I’ll let you get stuck in. As always the show is available for download/stream below and the easiest way to stay updated is to subscribe to the RSS or iTunes feeds.

Up in October we have guest mixes from Robot Koch, Mweslee and Salva as well as some more goodies to be announced soon alongside our regular shows. Till then, crank up the volume and enjoy!

We wrap up 2009 with part 2 of our ‘best of’ mix. This is the last show of the year and continues to run down some of our favourite tracks from the last 12 months.

The mix starts with our second ‘Labels of 09′ mini feature looking at Ramp Recordings, a label that for me has had an incredible year and put out good music, consistently without worrying about scenes, genres and things like that. Doing eclectic isn’t necessarily hard though, doing it well however is and for me Ramp is one of those labels who managed to do just that: serve up a truly eclectic mix of releases, artists and styles and do so with a cohesion, quality control and consistency that only makes the music shine that much more. Add to this some quality artwork and an ear for snapping up producers that are bubbling under, like FaltyDL, Shortstuff or Tokimonsta, and you have a label which you need to make time for if you haven’t yet.

As I said they’ve had a rather busy year with something close to ten or so releases so I’ve managed to fit as much as I can in this mini feature with pretty much one track from every release this year, bar one or two. If you like what you hear then check the website and catch up with some seriously good music.

Elsewhere part 2 of the best of 09 features music from the likes of Darkstar, Peverelist, Joker, Dorian Concept, Daedelus, Clutchy Hopkins, Soundspecies, Mount Kimbie, Hudson Mohawke, Floating Points, Machinedrum, Poirier, Blue Daisy, Jamie Vex’d, Quarta330 and many more.

As usual tracklist and download links below. And if you haven’t yet may we suggest you sign up to the newsletter, RSS feed or iTunes feed and this way you’ll never miss a show.

So that’s it for 2009, and the first decade of this century/millenium. Many thanks to all our listeners, all the labels and artists we’ve worked with and who’ve supported us, all our guests, our extended family, DDay One, Mr Trick, 2tall and everyone else. It’s been a great year and here’s to 2010!

Peace

Laurent

<itunes:summary>We wrap up 2009 with part 2 of our 'best of' mix. This is the last show of the year and continues to run down some of our favourite tracks from the last 12 months.

The mix starts with our second 'Labels of 09' mini feature looking at Ramp Recordings, a label that for me has had an incredible year and put out good music, consistently without worrying about scenes, genres and things like that. Doing eclectic isn't necessarily hard though, doing it well however is and for me Ramp is one of those labels who managed to do just that: serve up a truly eclectic mix of releases, artists and styles and do so with a cohesion, quality control and consistency that only makes the music shine that much more. Add to this some quality artwork and an ear for snapping up producers that are bubbling under, like FaltyDL, Shortstuff or Tokimonsta, and you have a label which you need to make time for if you haven't yet.

As I said they've had a rather busy year with something close to ten or so releases so I've managed to fit as much as I can in this mini feature with pretty much one track from every release this year, bar one or two. If you like what you hear then check the website and catch up with some seriously good music.

Elsewhere part 2 of the best of 09 features music from the likes of Darkstar, Peverelist, Joker, Dorian Concept, Daedelus, Clutchy Hopkins, Soundspecies, Mount Kimbie, Hudson Mohawke, Floating Points, Machinedrum, Poirier, Blue Daisy, Jamie Vex'd, Quarta330 and many more.

As usual tracklist and download links below. And if you haven't yet may we suggest you sign up to the newsletter, RSS feed or iTunes feed and this way you'll never miss a show.

So that's it for 2009, and the first decade of this century/millenium. Many thanks to all our listeners, all the labels and artists we've worked with and who've supported us, all our guests, our extended family, DDay One, Mr Trick, 2tall and everyone else. It's been a great year and here's to 2010!

Peace

Despite it being nearly one week into November, we’re bringing you the October show which suffered the delaying combo of both my laptop dying and a rather nasty cold hitting me in the same week. The show was actually wrapped 2 weeks ago but we couldn’t get it out till now. Lucky you though, as you’ll be getting another show in a few weeks with our November edition.

I realised as I was putting the tracklist together that for some reason this month features a rather high number of freely available tracks. This is in part a reflection of my own listening habits (and the fact I spend way too much time on the internet) but also I think of the move by artists and labels to make more music available freely as a way to promote paying releases, gigs and other merchandise. Lastly I would also say that the increasing number of free tracks in our playlists this year is a reflection of the increase in quality in free music. Whereas before free tracks where often throwaway material, today an increasing number of artists are releasing bootlegs, remixes and their own tracks for free and keeping a high quality control on it. Again I think this is something that plays into the aforementioned ‘free music as promotion’ vehicle. All the artists with a freely available track in this month’s show also have physical, paying releases and quite a few are actually established artists in their own ‘scenes’.

What about the music though? This month we take in a rather wide range of music, reflecting the diversity of what’s been trickling into our inbox/hands. From the psychedelic meets Afghani traditional music of Ariana Delawari to straight beats (and some incredible flips) from KenLo, fLako, Fulgeance and Dibiase via tribal house vibes from Blue Daisy, 21st century boogie from Dam Funk, hard-hitting hip hop from Kids in Tracksuits and Mr Lif and forward-thinking productions from Om Unit, Mike Slott and Talen. And that’s only part of it, there’s more and it’s all high quality as far as I’m concerned.

This month’s mini-feature is a tie-in with the 5th anniversary of the Hyperdub label. Headed by Kode 9, Hyperdub has long been a favourite at Rhythm Inc, with Trick regularly playing the label’s early releases as both the show and label share roughly the same birthdays. To celebrate their anniversary Hyperdub have curated an incredible compilation, called ’5′, spanning two CDs or 5 12″s and featuring classic material from the label’s archive, unreleased one-offs and 15 or so brand new productions from the label’s artists and friends including names like Flying Lotus, Mala, Martin, Samiyam, Ikonika, Quarta330, and more. It’s fair to say that ’5′ is the final nail in the coffin for lesser labels, if it was even needed, that shows just how influential and forward thinking Hyperdub has been as an independent over the years. From its humble beginnings to its current wide palette of sounds, Hyperdub continues to do what everyone least expects, and that’s just one of many reasons why we love them and their music. For the feature we’ve got four tracks from the compilation taking in The Bug under his King Midas Sound alias, Mala, Kode 9 and Samiyam – music as different as it comes and yet somehow logically intertwined.

So enough with the words, sit back and crank the volume for 2h of the latest and freshest music. And stay tuned for some special shows coming up in the month. For now enjoy!

As promised we round off July (just in time too) with another 80 mins of fresh new music, exclusives and all that good stuff. Summer is generally a quiet time for music, but it’s fair to say that this year is a bit of an exception with quite a few releases worthy of your attention that have either just come out, are about to or will be out once summer ends (that last part not applying to anyone London obviously, as summer seems to have already ended).

In no specific order we’ve got new music Blue Daisy, Foreign Beggarz, Poirier and Face-T, Shackleton, Shortstuff, Floating Points, DJ Buzz, Disrupt, Elaquent, Tranqill, XLII, Nosaj Thing, Lorn, Guilty Simpson, Fulgeance and more.

Having realised that the last few mini features have all been about west coast producers (without meaning to) this month we turn our attention to Europe, and Austria in particular with 5 tracks from the young producer Dorian Concept – a man who’s been a pleasure to discover and follow with a truly unique take on the whole beat/electronic hip hop thing, backed by some of the most ridiculously exhilarating synth melodies. Peep this really good interview with the man by On-Point for further proof/explanation. The 5 tracks span Dorian’s short but fairly intense discography so far.

So that’s about it for July, stay tuned for more guest mixes in August as well as the regular show, sometime towards the end of the month. For now though, sit back, relax and enjoy!

L.A’s Dam Funk is dropping his debut album on Stones Throw later this year, but it wouldn’t be an ST release if there wasn’t something special to it and in this case it’s the fact that the release will be available as a 5 LP, with 2h30 of music!

As L.A’s ambassador of Boogie Funk, Dam Funk’s made a name for himself in the last few years as a purveyor of some of the best sounds, rocking dancefloors worldwide and dropping tracks to much acclaim and plenty of support across the board. Accordingly his debut LP is awaited by many, us included, and the first taste of it is here now in the form of the LAtrik EP, the first of five that make up the album.

LAtrick is available on Stones Throw as a digital release, with more to come. Click the link to buy and look below for official words from Dam and ST as well as a download of the track ‘On & On’ taken from the EP. Big thanks to Stones Throw for letting us share it with you.

From Dam-Funk himself:

“LAtrik is more of my ‘electric style’ (hence the title of this volume) which is influenced by, yet never bitin’, such great artist as Juan Atkins (Cybotron) & Prince to name just a few. It also highlights the more Modern sounds of L.A. based Funk right now with instrumentals like ‘Toeachizown’ & vocal tracks like ‘Mirrors’ which, I feel are distinctly my sound, humbly speaking. I hope U dig it, as this was made 4 U! Stay tuned 4 Volumes: 2. 3, 4, & 5. – D-F”

From ST:

“Dam-Funk is currently putting finishing touches on his debut album Toeachizown which will be released this Fall as 5/LP set – two and a half hours of music – with CD version to follow. Toeachizown is a modern funk album, created in five distinct parts: LAtrik, Fly, Life, Hood, Sky. Stones Throw will be releasing a few of these volumes digitally prior to the vinyl & CD release in Fall. LAtrik is available now exclusively at http://stonesthrow.com.”
