<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

Having made it safe and sound to Tokyo after 20h on planes, I’m posting this before I pass out from jetlag and exhaustion. Our FoF mix series returns after a month hiatus with a guest mix from London’s Streets of Beige – purveyors of some of the more interesting London line ups in recent months including live appearances from Letherette and My Dry Wet Mess.

Bare Girls from Streets of Beige put together this guest mix continuing the tradition of the series reflecting his own tastes and some of the more underrated producers out there from Japan, the U.S and Belgium among others. Here’s some text from the man himself about the mix, a photo to accompany it above and full links to download/stream and tracklist below that:

The journey of being asked to make this mixtape through to sending in the finished product has been riddled with as much excitement as it has complexities and also isolation, caused largely by significant changes that all of us in the team are currently going through on various levels.

When making this mix I was thinking about the sensitive precipice we straddle whenever we’re flung into a period of rapid and unavoidable change – between embracing the emergence of opportunity, or being weighed down by the unfamiliarity of our position and the uncertainty we face. And how finding the inspiration and courage to avoid the sometimes bleak void that manifests itself in the later can be an intense emotional struggle.

This resulted in the tender, organic and touching moments at the beginning of this mix that are given a timely shock awakening by a hit of full on sample-chopping mastery courtesy of Cupp Cave a good ten songs in. Along with his take on modern beats I’ve tried to cast light on a range of producers who I feel are criminally underrepresented. This includes (in no particular order) Knxwledge, Lapalux, Blank & Kytt, Monkey_sequence.19, Morpheground, Duke Hugh and several more who you can ogle on the tracklisting.

Of course there are some seasoned producers on there too (and a selection of field recordings from recent adventures with the 404), and having melded these elements together on a sleepy Sunday afternoon this set just the right tone for a more mellow and laid-back selection, but one that was still so vital and exciting that you can practically smell the fresh blood here.

Big thanks to Leeor and Streets of Beige for the mix. Check SoB’s Facebook page for more on them and upcoming parties.

And so the end of year arrives and with it our last show of 2010. The last of our end of year shows, this one follows the 2009 best of mix I did last year though instead of spreading across two shows I tried to squeeze all I could into one session. Make no mistake, despite the naysayers and the doom and gloom surrounding the music industry in general, for me 2010 has been a rather good year music wise. On one side there’s seemingly more music than ever, and with that comes a certain lack of quality control. On the other, this lack of quality control and breakdown of the traditional models within the industry has I believe given various labels and artists in the ‘underground’ a lot more potential for flourishing. As the old saying goes, you’ve just got to look closer to find the gold among all the noise.

I originally had 160 odd tracks earmarked for this show. A couple of days of ruminating and trying things out and I managed to keep it down to 60 or so, as well as the mini feature on All City Records, my label of the year (as you should know by now – they did two guest mixes for us earlier this month). In the process of putting the mix together it first occurred to me that if you consider the amount of music I received this year for the show (at a guess I’d say 500 odd releases, maybe even more) then there really is a big job of sifting through everything to find the stuff that’s actually worthy of a best of mix. Even then I had to leave stuff out that I wished could have been fitted. The criteria (if you will) was a mix of what I’d played on the show in the last 12 months and which I considered to be well above par, as well as tracks that have been staples in my DJ sets and tracks from albums that have barely left my portable player all year. The result is the following tracklist. Apologies to those I missed, but if anything it’s the perfect excuse for you to go over all the shows we’ve put out in the last year (hint hint). I also tried to avoid too much duplication with the previous two end of year shows from Primus Luta and Raid System.

So that’s it for 2010, another year under the belt and onwards. Rhythm Incursions has seen a lot of changes this year – new website, new presenters, new regular guest series. It’s been an absolute blast, and I want to thank everyone who’s made the show what it is and who works out of their own time towards continuing to make this one of the finer podcast series out there. In no specific order much love and thanks to Primus Luta, XLII, Broken Haze, Dday One and Leeor at FoF for their work. A big thank you as well to all the labels, artists and PR who send us stuff and take time to talk to us, sometimes even bowing to our pressures for guest spots. Among them (too many to mention) special thanks to Olan at All City, Gordon at Mooncircle, Marcus at Planet Mu & Hyperdub, Flip at Error Broadcast, Melissa at Tailored, the Outpost, Alex Nut and Alex Chase. Lastly big thanks to my close friends and inspirations Om Unit and Vinilificio.

Right then, enough of the chatter. I’ll let you enjoy the mix. It’s roughly 2h15, with the first 2 hours taken by the mix and the last 15 minutes the All City records megamix celebrating some of their releases from 2010. I was intent on doing a proper megamix of all the releases, but just couldn’t due to time and other engagements. Still this should give you the last push to check their stuff if you haven’t yet. No talking, all mixing and music!

As always stream and/or download below, or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes/email. The playlist is so long I can’t find the energy of linking all the labels/websites this time so PLEASE if you like what you hear than check the playlist and go out there and support the artists and the music. You can browse all available shows by artists on this page, and all previous shows have full, linked tracklists.

Love and blessings, see you in 2011!

Following from the inaugural mix of our Friends of Friends series last month (here if you missed it) we swiftly follow it up with an exclusive mix from L.A’s Asura, a producer who’s slowly but surely making a name for himself as part of the city’s ever growing, open-minded music scene that encompasses beats, electronic, hip hop, atmospheric and more. Entitled ‘I Am The Homonculus’ it’s a lovely ride through the man’s musical tree as he calls it.

For those new to this series, the FoF mix series features an exclusive mix every month from a close friend of the label complete with an exclusive picture from another close friend of the label. The mixes go out exclusively on Rhythm Incursions and also via FoF’s Soundcloud page (embed below). The picture this month comes from Shaun ‘Sodapop’ Koplow, and has the following story attached to it:

This photo was the result of luck while messing around with my new Panasonic Lumix – GF1. While setting up camp in Joshua Tree for Lazy Brow’s bachelor party, I figured I’d attempt to document things with a few long exposures. I came up with a few shots that seemed exemplary of that night’s bro-motions just fine… this being one of them.

As for the mix, Asura had the following to say about it:

My musical tree spanning the past five years, full of old ones, friends’ ones, and my ones. Los Angeles is represented deep while paying special attention to certain very very important tracks in my development (especially pay attention to “The Big Ship”, “Outdoor Miner”, “I Am A Scientist”, and “Tommib”). Searching for the oppositions of melody/noise, order/chaos, pop/non-pop, and all that good bullshit. Mostly just enjoy, I know I did.

For more on Asura you can check Nonprojects.net and his myspace. Look out for a new split release between the man and Non Project’s Anenon, which should be out later this month via the label and Alpha Pup distribution.

For now though sit back and enjoy this lush musical ride into the influences of one of L.A’s best kept secrets!

After nearly a week of blue, planeless skies here in London I guess we can confidently say that spring has arrived – and hopefully summer isn’t too far behind. So as we do every month let us celebrate with some music and another 2 hours of new, upcoming, old and unreleased bits for discerning ears.

On the show this month we’ve got new and forthcoming music from B-Ju, Ras G, Robot Koch Lando Kal, Lorn, Jahcoozi, FaltyDL, Om Unit, Letherette, Uncle Lew, Alex B, Take, Deru, LV and Quarta330, Shigeto, Skitz, Tokimonsta, Space Invadas, Yosi Horikawa, Dimlite and more alongside some favourites of recent times from RSD, James Blake, Uyama Hiroto, Mount Kimbie, Daisuke Tanabe and Flying Lotus among others.

This month’s mini feature meanwhile looks at the work of Japanese producer O.N.O. Probably best know as the producer for Tha Blue Herb, one of Japan’s most famous rap crews, and hailing from the northern island of Hokkaido, O.N.O has also been releasing under his name as a solo artist for well over ten years now. And it’s his work as a solo artist that’s always fascinated me since I discovered him thanks to Waxfactor about five years ago. This mini feature aims to shine a little light on the man’s incredible production range which runs from hip hop to dub, jungle to house, ambient to abstract and at times crazy electronic music. The constant in a lot of his music is his use of machines to create the sounds, something which really takes meaning when you see his live shows (youtube here and here) where equipped with 2 MPCs, a sequencer and effects units he puts on one of the most fascinating and enjoyable live electronic music shows I’ve ever seen. On the mini feature we’ve got 4 tracks from releases spanning most of his solo career and which as I said gives a nice idea of his diverse output. For more on the man check his website and those of you in/around Tokyo can catch him playing with Flying Lotus for a Tokyo Brainfeeder session soon – hopefully this might help shine some more light on his work outside Japan.

For now though sit back and enjoy another two hours of discerning music for discerning ears. As always you can grab the show directly at the link below, stream at the bottom of this post, or subscribe to our iTunes and/or RSS feed and you won’t even have to click through and read through all this every time we drop a new show. Look out for more guest mixes coming up next and some news regarding the shows. Until then enjoy!

<itunes:summary>After nearly a week of blue, planeless skies here in London I guess we can confidently say that spring has arrived - and hopefully summer isn't too far behind. So as we do every month let us celebrate with some music and another 2 hours of new, upcoming, old and unreleased bits for discerning ears.

On the show this month we've got new and forthcoming music from B-Ju, Ras G, Robot Koch Lando Kal, Lorn, Jahcoozi, FaltyDL, Om Unit, Letherette, Uncle Lew, Alex B, Take, Deru, LV and Quarta330, Shigeto, Skitz, Tokimonsta, Space Invadas, Yosi Horikawa, Dimlite and more alongside some favourites of recent times from RSD, James Blake, Uyama Hiroto, Mount Kimbie, Daisuke Tanabe and Flying Lotus among others.

This month's mini feature meanwhile looks at the work of Japanese producer O.N.O. Probably best know as the producer for Tha Blue Herb, one of Japan's most famous rap crews, and hailing from the northern island of Hokkaido, O.N.O has also been releasing under his name as a solo artist for well over ten years now. And it's his work as a solo artist that's always fascinated me since I discovered him thanks to Waxfactor about five years ago. This mini feature aims to shine a little light on the man's incredible production range which runs from hip hop to dub, jungle to house, ambient to abstract and at times crazy electronic music. The constant in a lot of his music is his use of machines to create the sounds, something which really takes meaning when you see his live shows (youtube here and here) where equipped with 2 MPCs, a sequencer and effects units he puts on one of the most fascinating and enjoyable live electronic music shows I've ever seen. On the mini feature we've got 4 tracks from releases spanning most of his solo career and which as I said gives a nice idea of his diverse output. For more on the man check his website and those of you in/around Tokyo can catch him playing with Flying Lotus for a Tokyo Brainfeeder session soon - hopefully this might help shine some more light on his work outside Japan.

For now though sit back and enjoy another two hours of discerning music for discerning ears. As always you can grab the show directly at the link below, stream at the bottom of this post, or subscribe to our iTunes and/or RSS feed and you won't even have to click through and read through all this every time we drop a new show. Look out for more guest mixes coming up next and some news regarding the shows. Until then enjoy!

You can download the Dimlite-produced track ‘Issues’ below. Here’s the official word on it:
“The latest track from Finale’s debut album A Pipe Dream & A Promise, “Issues,” traces the difficulties of growing up in a less than ideal situation and doing what you have to do to make the best of it. Supported by the electronic beat of Swiss producer Dimlite, Finale spits verses of true stories about those who have had to face adversity in their life. Finale offered this explanation of the track: “When I got the beat, Dimlite just sent me the drums and I wrote it within an hour. I thought of the craziest and most real stories. I think rappers forget to show the moral of the story. I think they are so used to telling the outlandish, most gangsteriffic crap, they forget to tell the stories that people can relate to, like teen pregnancy, like my mom was 15 when she had me.”

Personally it’s growing on me a lot, much more than the Jay Dee produced one which was leaked a few weeks back. The album, ‘A Pipe Dream and a Promise’, is out now. Buy it from iTunes here (iTunes link).

Right then, we roll into the summer months like a heatwave with a show packed to the rafters with new music, exclusives and a few old favourites. In a bit of a departure from our normal shows, I opted for more of a mix feel to the show this month. With so much music to showcase that was the logical option, though you still have the pleasure of my unimmitable presenting style, complete with dodgy French accent.

On the show this month we have new music from Nadsroic, Mike Slott, Dimlite, Danny Breaks, Scienz of Life, 2nd Class Citizen, Ceschi, Dizz1, Mad EP, DJ Food, King Midas Sound, Architeq, Om Unit, Memory9, Wrongtom vs Roots Manuva, Loops Haunt, Paul White, Fulgeance, FaltyDL, Joker, The Grouch, Busdriver, Ben Sharpa, Machine Drum, Waajeed, Dorian Concept, and more.

And if all that wasn’t enough we’ve also got two mini features this month: one on the excellent new Beat Dimensions vol2 compilation from Jay Scarlett and Cinnaman and the other on Nosaj Thing, who releases his debut album this month on Alpha Pup. The Nosaj Thing feature was long overdue considering how much we’ve enjoyed and supported his music on the show over the last year.

So without further ado, get stuck in with Rhythm Incursions May, 75 minutes of musical goodness to help bring in the summer vibes. Full details on where to buy all the releases can be found in the playlist.

As a last note a big thank you to all the listeners and visitors who have made Rhythm Incursions such a popular show according to our stats: we’re clocking an average of 1200 downloads a day across the site, which is no mean feat and a pleasure to know considering Rhythm Incursions is a totally independent show run by ourselves in our own time. The best reward is to know that people are enjoying what we do, so once more a big thank you to all listeners past, present and future.

Enjoy!
