[MP3] The Weeknd – High For This (Stadium Footwork edit)

So in between the constant aftershocks we’ve been getting here in Tokyo (nearly 1,000 earthquakes and shocks since March 11), organising the Nihon Kizuna release and parties and trying to actually have a holiday, I got chatting to Nasty Nasty on Twitter a few weeks back. I think it all started because Planet Mu are about to release a new single of his called ‘No Names’, which I thoroughly recommend you check out.

So we got chatting and the man kindly sent us some newer material to go alongside this new single – more on that in coming shows (or if you catch me DJing in Tokyo this weekend). Alongside this, he also sent a couple of club edits the other day – a totally tripped out Chopped n Screwed job and this one, a stadium-sized footwork edit of The Weeknd which he made for a recent Frite Nite party – the SF label/crew he works with. It’s pretty effin’ good, in fact it went down a treat when I dropped it last saturday in Tokyo and it seems to have turned into a crowd favourite overall, leading the man to kindly allow us to put it online for posterity. Don’t let the edit title fool you either, this is one of the nicest takes on the footwork sound I’ve heard in a while.

You can stream and/or download it below as a 320 mp3.

For more on Nasty Nasty have a listen on Soundcloud, and like I said look out for the Planet Mu 12 and more coming soon which we’ll be airing on the show for sure.

[MP3] DJ G – Doodlebug

Latest tracks by DJG

An email came from DJ G in our inbox a few days ago (courtesy of Alex Incyde) announcing a forthcoming free release of 12 tracks which G is going to make available on his site as of September 15. The name rung a bell and after putting the headphones on I realised where I’d heard his name, and music, before – in various radio shows from Joe Nice, the charismatic U.S dubstep ambassador.

Titled Voids (1 and 2) the release was explained by DJ G to us as follows:

I’m releasing a collection of twelve tracks through my website djgsound.com on Wednesday September 15. It’s not an album, but I do feel the tracks belong together, and I decided they belong in two parts; Voids One is really for the ravers, the djs. These songs represent a sound I pushed hard in the club over the last few years: dark, energetic, moody rave vibes. Voids Two is more personal, a bit lighter maybe, and closer to my heart.

These are songs that I’ve never really been able to let go of, nearly all of them I pulled from scheduled releases or turned away offers from labels for various reasons. They are songs that I really believe in and feel connected to. Some were written as far back as 2007 and as recently as a month ago and they’ve been supported by an endless list of big name djs and requested by friends and listeners for release.

Ahead of the release he’s agreed to let us give a track away for free and I’ve picked Doodlebug, a track I remember first hearing on a Joe Nice show where it made a big impact. And that impact hasn’t dimmed, primarily thanks to its irresistible bassline.

You can download/stream the track below as well as view the full tracklist for the Voids releases. They drop September 15 on his website. Stay tuned until and if you like what you hear be sure to check his site and soundcloud (which we’ve embedded above).

Jammer – Better Than (Lorn remix)

Anyone who listens to the shows regularly or has been following us for a while now should know Lorn. Our story with the Milwaukee native goes waaaaaay back to the scratch internet boards days when he was making some of the most amazing, mind-bending loops for people to cut over. A few years ago he started reappearing on the radar with his own productions, and in 2009 his first proper debut album was snapped up by Brainfeeder for release (if you don’t count the extensive amount of music he’s put out for free before that, or the break record he released).

All of which only added to the surprise I got a few weeks back when Big Dada hit me up to say that Lorn had remixed the new Jammer single that the label will be releasing next week. Yes that’s right – Lorn from Milwaukee remixing Jammer, the grime legend from London. It doesn’t get better than this, literally.

‘Better Than’ is out March 15 on Big Dada, with original, instrumental and aforementioned Lorn remix which you can download/stream below courtesy of the lovely Dada people. Described as a dubstep remix elsewhere, I can see why people would say that, though personally Lorn’s take doesn’t particularly make me think of any specific genre, it’s just an incredibly heavy, crushing flip of the original, taking Jammer’s vocals into the territories Lorn is most comfortable in – dark, vicious territories with towering drums and bass lines.

If you want more from the man be sure to check his myspace, as well as the mini feature we did on him last year. And stay tuned for more previews of his album, ‘Nothing Else’ which will drop on Brainfeeder in June 2010. For now though enjoy this beauty of a remix.

Omega Clash – Straighter Metal

omegaclashlogo

Omega Clash is a project consisting of Adopahighway and Lorn. I discovered them last night when Lorn tweeted about the digital release of their first EP via bandcamp. I promptly got on it and was very pleasantly surprised. Fitting nicely with Lorn’s recent output, and forthcoming LP (check previous shows for previews of that), Omega Clash’s EP1 is a short but intense musical journey into twisted beats, hip hop and electronica with hints of ambient and metal. And that’s not even doing it any ‘real’ justice.

I got in touch with Lorn shortly after all this and the guys have agreed to let us give away a track from the EP – so see below where you can download ‘Straighter Metal’ which is possibly my favourite track on there, a wicked, metal-inspired number.

And if you like what you hear than hit up the Omega Clash bandcamp where you can buy the EP in high quality for 6$ onwards. I heavily recommend it! And look out for a mini feature on Lorn in the August show. For now crank it up and throw your metal hands in the air.

Fulgeance – Ann Arbor

fulgeance

No secret has been made on this here site and radio show about our liking and interest in the One Handed Music label. You just have to look at the tracklists since January to see that. And they don’t even pay us!

Seriously though, as Trick pointed out to me by email a while back One Handed are obviously on it when it comes to their A&R approach and this is reflected in their next release, the ‘Smartbanging’ EP by Fulgeance. The French producer has become a favourite of mine since I first discovered him last year on the excellent 7×7 series, and even more so since I saw him live in London earlier this year. The man makes sweaty club music rooted in hip hop without taking itself too seriously, allowing for ridiculously infectious slowed down 4×4 rhythms laced with deliriously addictive synths and melodies. All of which he performs live on 2 MPCs while talking to the audience and just being an all-round great showman. If you ever get the chance to see him live, don’t miss it.

Back to the point, his new EP on One Handed has been one of my favourite releases of the year so far, with the title track rightfully getting an airing whenever I’ve been able to. After some pressing issues the EP is finally ready for release, and to celebrate this joyous fact the lovely people at One Handed are giving out a track for free (beats going round decapitating people as the French have been known to do).

So see below for a stream and download of ‘Ann Arbor’ taken from the ‘Smartbanging’ EP and also look over on the Bandcamp page for full details of the EP and links to buy the digital version (as well as a direct link for Ann Arbor if ours somehow doesn’t work for you). Vinyl version should be dropping anytime now, keep an eye on One Handed’s myspace for that. Also see PR blurb below:

Smartbanging’: it’s a made up word, but it’s as good as any to describe the style of this French don of the MPC2000: he makes the kind of goodtime party music that never goes out of fashion – but he’s about as far from ‘fashion’ as you can get. And he makes it all with a musical finesse that elevates it above the dumb club bangers and offers nourishment for the head as well as fuel for the feet. His EP features four of his own mutant discoid cuts and a strange, mesmerising late night trip from Detroit electro wunderkind Jimmy Edgar.

His two EPs for Musique Large and his alter-ego Peter Digital Orchestra have won him fans such as Busy P, Gilles Peterson and Dazed & Confused.

As usual a big big thanks to Alex for the love, and all that’s left to say is please proceed to get sweaty to this. Oh yeah and buy it, it’ll make your life better.
