As announced last week our label of the year for 2010 is All City – or more accurately my label of the year as Primus Luta and the Raid System boys are also choosing their own. With this in mind, we’ve been busy talking to Olan, who runs the Dublin-based label, over the last few months to arrange a guest mix to celebrate the occasion. As it turns out he offered to do two mixes, the first of which is this mini mix of 10 records from 2010. This will be followed by a proper mix called ‘A Random Slice of Cali’ celebrating his love of music from the area as well as All City’s L.A 10 x 10 series which was released throughout the year on the label (and which we’ve featured extensively throughout the year on the shows).

First up though are 10 records from the year which Olan wanted to share. Funnily enough these reflect a lot of the records that we’ve also enjoyed here at Rhythm Inc towers with artists like Floating Points, Shed, Kyle Hall and Untold all appearing. And for the trainspotters out there the mix also includes the amazing collabo between Martyn and Mike Slott which the label will be releasing shortly.

Not much more to say on this – it’s really just a little taster of All City’s musical preferences and the perfect appetizer for the main mix which will drop tomorrow! Be sure to stay tuned for that.

Alongside the excellent 10 x 10 series which the label has put out this year, featuring luminaries and newcomers including Dam Funk, Matthewdavid, Take, Tokimonsta, Computer Jay, Daedelus, and many more, you should also get the Beatstrumental 7 x 7 series which preceeded it in 2008 and was an excellent showcase of the growing beat scene post-Beat Dimensions with 7″s from Fulgeance, Le NKO, Hudson Mohawke, Mike Slott and more. Quite frankly every release on the label has been of quality and so you should really just treat yourself to as much as you can!

It’s February, the weather on this side of the world could still be primarily described as apocalyptic and the recession is still going on apparently. All of which means you need some fresh new music and aural pleasures more than ever. Fear not, we’ve got you covered.

Up this month we take a close look at Mux Mool, an NYC-based artist we first discovered thanks to Jakub at Ghostly Int and who will be releasing a new album on the label in the coming weeks. We look at some new and older tracks of his, showing his versatile approach to hip hop and electronic music. It goes without saying we’re big fans.

We wrap up 2009 with part 2 of our ‘best of’ mix. This is the last show of the year and continues to run down some of our favourite tracks from the last 12 months.

The mix starts with our second ‘Labels of 09′ mini feature looking at Ramp Recordings, a label that for me has had an incredible year and put out good music, consistently without worrying about scenes, genres and things like that. Doing eclectic isn’t necessarily hard though, doing it well however is and for me Ramp is one of those labels who managed to do just that: serve up a truly eclectic mix of releases, artists and styles and do so with a cohesion, quality control and consistency that only makes the music shine that much more. Add to this some quality artwork and an ear for snapping up producers that are bubbling under, like FaltyDL, Shortstuff or Tokimonsta, and you have a label which you need to make time for if you haven’t yet.

As I said they’ve had a rather busy year with something close to ten or so releases so I’ve managed to fit as much as I can in this mini feature with pretty much one track from every release this year, bar one or two. If you like what you hear then check the website and catch up with some seriously good music.

Peep this really good interview with the man by On-Point for further proof/explanation. The 5 tracks span Dorian’s short but fairly intense discography so far.

We’re back with a much delayed regular show. Apologies for the lack of updates and shows in June, but life got in the way with work, other projects and my own Original Cultures work. Still the upside is we’ve got quite a lot of stuff to get through, so this month there’ll be two regular shows, with the next one dropping towards the end of the month. In between we should also have a few guest mixes and other surprises so stay tuned to the site.

This month’s mini feature shines a light on L.A. producer Take aka Sweatson Klank. Take is by far one of my favourite producers in the whole ‘beat scene’ movement, and someone who I think is quite often forgotten or underated when discussing the recent rise in popularity and attention surrounding the whole beat thing. More than that, having been around for 10+ years, Take links the old and the new as far as the beat thing goes, having helped to usher in the beat movement in L.A. alongside people like Kutmah, Eric Coleman and others. His work, like that of people like Prefuse and Dabrye, nicely shows this and this mini feature shines a little light on this acting as a nice introduction to those who may not know of him. While it’s been a bit of a quiet month here at Rhythm Inc headquarters (life has a habit of getting in the way like that), the music has kept coming in thick and fast. This month’s show is therefore another slightly extended edition with 70 minutes of fresh new music and exclusives. We’ve been quieter than usual this month, but that hasn’t stopped music coming in by the bucket load into our inbox. 2009 already started on a high (see last month’s podcast for more on that) and it’s not showing any signs of stopping with labels and artists gearing up for the first quarter of the year with a lot of interesting projects and releases.

A deep space transmission reached us at Rhythm Incursions this week, coming from somewhere familiar and signed by none other than 2tall, universal astronaut, extended Rhythm Inc family member and producer at large. The sounds of the transmission are warm and comforting, much needed in these cold and snowy times. Once we decoded the transmission, the result was an hour of the latest sounds from across the planet beamed straight into your speakers.

So we suggest you turn it up to 11 and strap up for a race across the universe carried by basslines and some of the finest beats, new and old.

Also look out for 2tall‘s forthcoming release under his Om Unit moniker, which should be incoming on Terrorhythm records in the coming months. It’s been getting support from Benji B on BBC 1xtra and Alexander Nut on Rinse FM and having heard it we can tell you it’s well worth the wait.

This week’s podcast comes to you from another member of the Rhythm Incursions extended family. 2tall should need no introduction to regular listeners, but just in case I’ll leave it to him to do the introductions: “long time TTR/RI musical contributor, ex-DMC battler/turntablist, performer/showboater/nervous white guy with the correct arm movements and limited knowledge of music”. When you put it like that, what else is there to say?

Seriously though, those of you new to the show should check out the exclusive track from 2tall’s latest album, ‘The Softer Diagram’, which we featured a couple of weeks back. The album is out now, in physical and digital stores.

As we warned a couple of weeks back, 2tall’s put together an exclusive mix for Rhythm Incursions, looking at the recent wave of new beatmakers that are showing a return, or should that be a rebirth, of the beat. It’s a worldwide ting and the mix showcases it well with plenty of fresh and unreleased beats from the likes of Flying Lotus, Bullion, Uncle Lew, Jay Scarlett, Waajeed, Samiyam, Ras G, Dert, 00genesis and many more.
