LV – Aural Winter Blanket

Our second guest mix of the year comes courtesy of a London-based trio little of which is known apart from the most important thing – their music is good. LV is the name, and I first heard of them a few years back when Steve Goodman aka Kode 9 released a track of theirs (afaik their first release) on his Hyperdub label. A sweet, dub-tinged ballad called ‘Globetrotting’ it was love at first hearing you could say.

Since then I’ve kept an ear out for them, notably coming across their remix of Willie Isz earlier last year (which we featured on the November 09 show). They’ve released on a variety of other labels, including Ramp, primarily remixes. After all that I bumped into one of the trio, Simon, at the Hyperdub 5 party in November, and the following week once more at the Ramp party. We got chatting, exchanged emails and I mentioned a guest mix would be a welcome addition to the Rhythm Inc catalogue not least because I was a fan and because following our chats I could tell they would fit right at home with our ethos and listeners.

As I returned to the world of the internet this week I thought of hitting Simon back up for the guest mix when, great minds thinking alike, an email popped in with a link and tracklist. I instantly downloaded it, fired it up and as we chatted by email it occurred to me that this was a truly great guest mix and perfect addition to our series – it goes deep, treading territories we don’t often explore with a dubby vibe we absolutely love.

Think back to the beginnings of the show (some 5+ years ago) when Trick and Waxfactor put forward their love of people like Wordsound and the Agriculture as the basis for Rhythm Inc’s birth and you might start to be close to what the guys have delivered. I am well and truly stoked and cannot thank them enough.

Featuring primarily music from other people, including favourites of ours such as Untold and Pole, they’ve also put in an unofficial (but approved) remix they did for Klaus Roeder, and it’s an absolute corker.

The name of the mix comes from Simon, as I asked him for some words for the post he didn’t give me anything but mentioned that the mix was the ‘aural equivalent of a blanket, useful for the winter days’ – and well that’s the perfect description.

For more on LV be sure to check their myspace where you can purchase all previous releases, all of which we heartily recommend especially their Hyperdub plates. Look out for more from them in 2010 on Hyperdub as well as Soul Jazz and Keysound recordings among others. We’ll be sure to let you know and air the new music as it comes. They were also talking about a session they did with Tokyo’s Quarta330 when he was town last November, and I really hope something comes of that as it would be a thoroughly entertaining combo.

So without further ado, grab the mix, sit back, wrap up and prepare to go in deep – this one is a trip.

Rhythm Incursions – Best of 09 pt 2

bo2009med

We wrap up 2009 with part 2 of our ‘best of’ mix. This is the last show of the year and continues to run down some of our favourite tracks from the last 12 months.

The mix starts with our second ‘Labels of 09′ mini feature looking at Ramp Recordings, a label that for me has had an incredible year and put out good music, consistently without worrying about scenes, genres and things like that. Doing eclectic isn’t necessarily hard though, doing it well however is and for me Ramp is one of those labels who managed to do just that: serve up a truly eclectic mix of releases, artists and styles and do so with a cohesion, quality control and consistency that only makes the music shine that much more. Add to this some quality artwork and an ear for snapping up producers that are bubbling under, like FaltyDL, Shortstuff or Tokimonsta, and you have a label which you need to make time for if you haven’t yet.

As I said they’ve had a rather busy year with something close to ten or so releases so I’ve managed to fit as much as I can in this mini feature with pretty much one track from every release this year, bar one or two. If you like what you hear then check the website and catch up with some seriously good music.

Elsewhere part 2 of the best of 09 features music from the likes of Darkstar, Peverelist, Joker, Dorian Concept, Daedelus, Clutchy Hopkins, Soundspecies, Mount Kimbie, Hudson Mohawke, Floating Points, Machinedrum, Poirier, Blue Daisy, Jamie Vex’d, Quarta330 and many more.

As usual tracklist and download links below. And if you haven’t yet may we suggest you sign up to the newsletter, RSS feed or iTunes feed and this way you’ll never miss a show.

So that’s it for 2009, and the first decade of this century/millenium. Many thanks to all our listeners, all the labels and artists we’ve worked with and who’ve supported us, all our guests, our extended family, DDay One, Mr Trick, 2tall and everyone else. It’s been a great year and here’s to 2010!

Peace

Laurent

Rhythm Incursions: July 09

We’re back with a much delayed regular show. Apologies for the lack of updates and shows in June, but life got in the way with work, other projects and my own Original Cultures work. Still the upside is we’ve got quite a lot of stuff to get through, so this month there’ll be two regular shows, with the next one dropping towards the end of the month. In between we should also have a few guest mixes and other surprises so stay tuned to the site.

As for this month’s new show, it’s another 80 mins of fresh new sounds and older favourites taking in music from Cooly G, Awol One, Busdriver, Milanese, Om Unit, Clutchy Hopkins, FaltyDL, Mr Dibiase, SA-RA, Push Button Objects, Prefuse 73, Joker, Bibio, Ras G and many more. Full tracklist below.

This month’s mini feature shines a light on L.A. producer Take aka Sweatson Klank. Take is by far one of my favourite producers in the whole ‘beat scene’ movement, and someone who I think is quite often forgotten or underated when discussing the recent rise in popularity and attention surrounding the whole beat thing. More than that, having been around for 10+ years, Take links the old and the new as far as the beat thing goes, having helped to usher in the beat movement in L.A. alongside people like Kutmah, Eric Coleman and others. His work, like that of people like Prefuse and Dabrye, nicely shows this and this mini feature shines a little light on this acting as a nice introduction to those who may not know of him. Peep the tracklist for full details and check his myspace for all the latest release news. Also look out for an interview I did with the man coming out shortly, here’s a sneak peek.

As usual you can download/stream the show directly below and/or subscribe via RSS or iTunes so you never miss a thing.

Enjoy and catch you in a few weeks.

Rhythm Incursions: May 09

Right then, we roll into the summer months like a heatwave with a show packed to the rafters with new music, exclusives and a few old favourites. In a bit of a departure from our normal shows, I opted for more of a mix feel to the show this month. With so much music to showcase that was the logical option, though you still have the pleasure of my unimmitable presenting style, complete with dodgy French accent.

On the show this month we have new music from Nadsroic, Mike Slott, Dimlite, Danny Breaks, Scienz of Life, 2nd Class Citizen, Ceschi, Dizz1, Mad EP, DJ Food, King Midas Sound, Architeq, Om Unit, Memory9, Wrongtom vs Roots Manuva, Loops Haunt, Paul White, Fulgeance, FaltyDL, Joker, The Grouch, Busdriver, Ben Sharpa, Machine Drum, Waajeed, Dorian Concept, and more.

And if all that wasn’t enough we’ve also got two mini features this month: one on the excellent new Beat Dimensions vol2 compilation from Jay Scarlett and Cinnaman and the other on Nosaj Thing, who releases his debut album this month on Alpha Pup. The Nosaj Thing feature was long overdue considering how much we’ve enjoyed and supported his music on the show over the last year.

So without further ado, get stuck in with Rhythm Incursions May, 75 minutes of musical goodness to help bring in the summer vibes. Full details on where to buy all the releases can be found in the playlist.

As a last note a big thank you to all the listeners and visitors who have made Rhythm Incursions such a popular show according to our stats: we’re clocking an average of 1200 downloads a day across the site, which is no mean feat and a pleasure to know considering Rhythm Incursions is a totally independent show run by ourselves in our own time. The best reward is to know that people are enjoying what we do, so once more a big thank you to all listeners past, present and future.

Enjoy!

Rhythm Incursions: April 09

April 25, 2009 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent

While it’s been a bit of a quiet month here at Rhythm Inc headquarters (life has a habit of getting in the way like that), the music has kept coming in thick and fast. This month’s show is therefore another slightly extended edition with 70 minutes of fresh new music and exclusives. From the live, funky sounds of El Michels Affair and The Heliocentrics to the dubbed out riddims of Dubterror, T-Woc and Ras G via 21st century gfunk from Joker, Funky stylings from Kode 9 and boom bap headnodders and the new school hip hop flavours of Willie Isz, Paul White, Dorian Concept, Jamie Vex’d, G.O.D and GB.

The mini feature this month looks at the work of West Coast producer Dert, a man who’s produced for KRS One among others and made a name for himself through various beat tapes and mashups releases including the excellent ‘Sometimes I Rhyme Slow’ and his reinterpretation of the Pink Floyd classic ‘Dark Side of The Moon’. For the feature we’ve hand picked 5 beats/tracks from previous releases as well as from his forthcoming CMYK EP, which is out now. Peep the playlist for full details of where to cop everything, and also look for Dert on iTunes where you can buy a few of his albums (can’t seem to find a way to link to the page directly, but it’ll come up if you search for Dert in the iTunes store).

So that’s it for this month, as usual grab the show directly below or subscribe via iTunes or your podcatcher of choice so you never miss a show (and save yourself a few clicks along the way). Subscription details can be found on the right hand side!

And stay tuned for some more guest mixes in May as well as the usual dose of fresh new music. Oh yeah and if you haven’t already be sure to check the Trick and Tom show’s weekly goodness and keep an eye on Turntable Radio for some special video and audio podcasts in coming weeks.

Enjoy!

Namo – Full Flavour

Namo - Full Flavour

We continue full steam ahead this month with the first of 3 L.A. exclusive mixes, courtesy of our man in the city of angels Dday One. First up is Namo, an L.A. area DJ who has put together a ‘Full Flavour’ mix for us that ticks all the boxes at the Rhythm Inc HQ and has been getting some serious rotation.

We’ll let Dday do the introductions…

“L.A. area DJ Namo, of Long Beach’s premiere weekly wednesday downtempo, hip hop, acid jazz and trip hop spot, The Downbeat Lounge. Last year he dropped his extra long EP ‘The Beat Book’. Based on what he spins live, it was only natural the album was full of deep, down-tempo heavy instrumentals, the kind you might need to pop a painkiller to enjoy. Beautiful, jazzy and dreamy, instantly head-nod worthy, extra slow break-beat with lots of pianos and horns.”

There’s plenty more info over on his myspace. For now though sit back and relax with over an hour of beats old and new in very fine L.A. style. The perfect accompaniment to the recent good weather and incoming spring.

Rhythm Incursions: best of 2008 aka ‘get stuffed or die trying’

Right then. You might have been wondering when the hell this mix was going to be online, and rightly too considering we announced it a while back. In the end, with life and other fun things getting in the way we decided to hold it back until the festivities were starting, kind of like a virtual serving of extra stuffing. And being that it’s the season of over indulging and excess, this month’s show is a best of 08 mix special: no talking, just 70 mins of some of the best and our favouritest music of the year. Whether you’re enjoying the festivities with the family, alone or with friends, away or at home, at work or on holiday (I did work last on xmas day so I know it’s not an impossibility, big up those who are!) we hope you enjoy our last show of the year.

Not only does this show include some of our favourite singles and album tracks from 2008, it also comes with a xmas-sized mini feature looking at the ouput of the Hyperdub label, which gets label of the year by a long mile, regardless of genre.

2008 has definitely been an interesting year musically to say the least. Trick remarked earlier on in the month that album wise it hasn’t been an exceptional year, which I’d have to agree with to an extent. A few albums do stand out, like say The Bug’s ‘London Zoo,’ and between putting this mix together and doing the obligatory end of year list thing over on my blog I’ve come to the realisation that this year it’s much more singles, EPs and certain album tracks that stand out for me. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing either.

This end of year special podcast reflects all of this with tracks from some of the year’s stand out albums, singles, EPs, and even a couple of unreleased numbers that have created quite a lot of interest on and offline. This show is also definitely a bit of a who’s who of the artists and the labels that have populated our tracklists on the regular since Rhythm Incursions moved to its podcast-only format back in June, with the likes of Nosaj Thing, Flying Lotus, Kode 9, Maga Bo, The Bug, J Dilla and more.

Another thing reflected in the mix is the return of the producer to the front in certain corners of the hip hop world (see explosion of interest around Flying Lotus for proof of that) and how this return has been distinctively led by a more awkward and experimental approach to instrumental tracks, also echoed in the work of certain producers affiliated with the dubstep, grime and other electronic scenes. While far from encompassing everything that happened this year, these two musical ‘tendencies’ have definitely had a big impact on fans, producers and DJs alike.

So that’s about it. We’re officially done for 08. Massive thanks to you the listeners for your continued support and a big big shout to the entire Rhythm Incursions clique: Mr Trick, Waxfactor, Carlo, Joey Beats, Dday One and the extended fam. Also a big thank you to all the artists and labels who have supported the show this year through their music and guest appearances.

Look out for more of the same in 2009, as we roll out some very tasty guest mixes and new shows from all the regulars in January (who knows Waxfactor might even come out of his hiding lair). If you’re new to the show then be sure to check our archives and the feed where you can find all the previous shows available for download (and there’s been some corkers this year).

And finally if you’re still feeling somewhat hungry or are looking for something else to get stuck into, then check out Turntable Radio’s own festive offering, which is none other than the entire Season’s Beatings series of festive mixes. These went live at the same time as this mix, so get stuck in yo!

See you in 2009.

Peace

Laurent
