Rhythm Incursions / Primus Luta aka RIPL – August ’10

Stepping up first as always this month is Primus Luta with RIPL. Slight change this month as he takes the occasion to look over the first half of the year and highlight favourites and must buys. I’ll leave the explaining to him but one eye over the tracklist and you’ll see Rhythm Inc favourites everywhere including All City records, Alpha Pup, Flying Lotus and Brainfeeder, Ghostly and more.
So this month as the summer nears end I decided to do an early reflection on the year and highlight some of the standout work I’ve heard throughout the year. So we’ll call this the RIPL Mid-Year Report with the very special RIPL Mid-Year Awards. Overall the selection gives a good picture of just how much ground is being covered by producers in 2010. With categories ranging from the “Wobble the Bass” award, the “Ultimate Break Beat” and the “Dr. Dre’s Detox” award, well lets just say it’ll put a smile on your face.
All of this in prep to actually do some sort of award thing for the end of the year. If not for the dope music and occasional vibes, check this out to see where my head is about ‘awarding’ the beat scene and fall through with some comments to let me know if there’s awards I got wrong, ones you really like, or ones you think I missed.
So that’s it. As the man said comments are much welcomed, let us know what you think!
As always show is available to direct download and stream below alongside full tracklist. Or just sign up to the RSS/iTunes feeds and never miss a show. Stay tuned for a guest mix from B-Ju next monday, RIRS August next friday and a very special guest mix from My Dry Wet Mess, the latest signing to Daedelus’ label, the following monday. It’s gonna be a good end of summer trust us.

We start the last week of what has been a very busy month here on Rhythm Inc with the first show from our second new team of presenters all the way live (well sort of) from Tokyo, Japan. Following the debut of Primus Luta last week with his new regular RIPL show (peep it here if you missed it) we’re very happy to welcome XLII and Broken Haze to the Rhythm Inc family for a new monthly podcast under the banner of their Raid System label and collective. Seeing as how I’m feeling highly inspired for names, we decided to take Primus’ idea of RIPL and make this new show RIRS. Bit more of a mouth full that’s for sure but hey. If you have a better idea answers on the back of a postcard in the comments below please.
Regular listeners will remember Raid System from a series of guest mixes we aired earlier this year featuring Broken Haze, XLII and Ken One. Following this we got talking with XLII and much like happened with Primus Luta it felt like a very logical thing to invite the guys on board for a regular show. So every month the dynamic duo of XLII and Broken Haze will be bringing you some fresh new music, exclusives and more from their label, friends and artists worldwide alongside some light hearted banter and presentation styles in English and Japanese. Considering that Japan is now our third biggest country for visits it’s only right for us to rep a show for the Japanese massive. 日本人のみんなさんよろしくおねがいします!
As with Primus’ first show, this is a test run of sort while we iron out all the kinks before officially launching our new schedule in June and over the summer. So please do let us know of any feedback in the comments section.
XLII and Broken Haze have put together a selection of new and forthcoming releases for you this month. Each show will feature segments presented by each of them, going back to back. This first show features a selection of new music from many of our favourites like Starkey, Paul White, Planet Mu and Lorn alongside many new artists who we haven’t featured in the past.
So without further ado please welcome our latest presenters to the Rhythm Incursions family – XLII and Broken Haze. As usual direct download link and stream are below. If you don’t want to miss a show please subscribe via our RSS or iTunes feeds (links in the sidebar).

Rhythm Incursions / Primus Luta aka RIPL – May ’10

I’m very happy to introduce our first (of two) brand new regular presenters to the Rhythm Incursions airwaves. Primus Luta from AvantUrb joins us for a new monthly show direct from the East coast of the United states. Alongside DDay One’s semi-regular show from L.A we’ve now got two presenters repping both sides of the country.
Regular listeners will remember the name as he’s guested on the show quite a few times in the last year, first with the retrospective Beat Construction mix in April, and then with 3 parts of his four-part The Vanguard series earlier this year. An avid music fan and musician, he holds the same interest in new music as we do and brings to the show the same open minded and embracing attitude that we try and put into ours. After chatting by email, following his work and putting his mixes on the show for the best part of a year, it felt like a natural progression to bring him on board.
Here’s some words from the man himself regarding the new show, which has been dubbed RIPL:
For the first episode of RIPL the aim was to give a broad idea of the type of stuff you can expect to hear over the coming months. This is an incredible period in music, with folk from the four corners really representing at the leading edge, where sounds and styles are being born every minute. We like to umbrella these into singular genres for simplicity, but the truth of the matter is that genre’s themselves have become modular.
Each genre, each sub-genre, is like a pebble dropping into the ocean of sound sending out ripples in concentric circles. They bounce off of each other, absorb one another’s energy, intersect, and create new ripples, new sounds, new genres, new sub genres. This show is all about the ripples. Okay I just made that up. It sounded good though, nowhere near as good as the music itself. Bring on the RIPL!!
Primus Luta will be holding it down on the second week of each month starting next month with his RIPL show. He will be followed by our other new presenters XLII and Broken Haze from Raid System in Tokyo – who regular listeners will remember we featured recently in a 3-part special – who will hold down the third week of the month starting in June (their debut show goes out next week). And then on the last week of the month our regular show will continue to go out. So that’ll be 3 times the amount of regular music coming your way each month, each from a different continent but with the same aim of bringing discerning music to discerning ears.
Please leave your feedback on this show so we can continue to build and take in your input as well.
Enjoy!

Rhythm Incursions – April ’10

After nearly a week of blue, planeless skies here in London I guess we can confidently say that spring has arrived – and hopefully summer isn’t too far behind. So as we do every month let us celebrate with some music and another 2 hours of new, upcoming, old and unreleased bits for discerning ears.
On the show this month we’ve got new and forthcoming music from B-Ju, Ras G, Robot Koch Lando Kal, Lorn, Jahcoozi, FaltyDL, Om Unit, Letherette, Uncle Lew, Alex B, Take, Deru, LV and Quarta330, Shigeto, Skitz, Tokimonsta, Space Invadas, Yosi Horikawa, Dimlite and more alongside some favourites of recent times from RSD, James Blake, Uyama Hiroto, Mount Kimbie, Daisuke Tanabe and Flying Lotus among others.
This month’s mini feature meanwhile looks at the work of Japanese producer O.N.O. Probably best know as the producer for Tha Blue Herb, one of Japan’s most famous rap crews, and hailing from the northern island of Hokkaido, O.N.O has also been releasing under his name as a solo artist for well over ten years now. And it’s his work as a solo artist that’s always fascinated me since I discovered him thanks to Waxfactor about five years ago. This mini feature aims to shine a little light on the man’s incredible production range which runs from hip hop to dub, jungle to house, ambient to abstract and at times crazy electronic music. The constant in a lot of his music is his use of machines to create the sounds, something which really takes meaning when you see his live shows (youtube here and here) where equipped with 2 MPCs, a sequencer and effects units he puts on one of the most fascinating and enjoyable live electronic music shows I’ve ever seen. On the mini feature we’ve got 4 tracks from releases spanning most of his solo career and which as I said gives a nice idea of his diverse output. For more on the man check his website and those of you in/around Tokyo can catch him playing with Flying Lotus for a Tokyo Brainfeeder session soon – hopefully this might help shine some more light on his work outside Japan.
For now though sit back and enjoy another two hours of discerning music for discerning ears. As always you can grab the show directly at the link below, stream at the bottom of this post, or subscribe to our iTunes and/or RSS feed and you won’t even have to click through and read through all this every time we drop a new show. Look out for more guest mixes coming up next and some news regarding the shows. Until then enjoy!

LV – Aural Winter Blanket

Our second guest mix of the year comes courtesy of a London-based trio little of which is known apart from the most important thing – their music is good. LV is the name, and I first heard of them a few years back when Steve Goodman aka Kode 9 released a track of theirs (afaik their first release) on his Hyperdub label. A sweet, dub-tinged ballad called ‘Globetrotting’ it was love at first hearing you could say.
Since then I’ve kept an ear out for them, notably coming across their remix of Willie Isz earlier last year (which we featured on the November 09 show). They’ve released on a variety of other labels, including Ramp, primarily remixes. After all that I bumped into one of the trio, Simon, at the Hyperdub 5 party in November, and the following week once more at the Ramp party. We got chatting, exchanged emails and I mentioned a guest mix would be a welcome addition to the Rhythm Inc catalogue not least because I was a fan and because following our chats I could tell they would fit right at home with our ethos and listeners.
As I returned to the world of the internet this week I thought of hitting Simon back up for the guest mix when, great minds thinking alike, an email popped in with a link and tracklist. I instantly downloaded it, fired it up and as we chatted by email it occurred to me that this was a truly great guest mix and perfect addition to our series – it goes deep, treading territories we don’t often explore with a dubby vibe we absolutely love.
Think back to the beginnings of the show (some 5+ years ago) when Trick and Waxfactor put forward their love of people like Wordsound and the Agriculture as the basis for Rhythm Inc’s birth and you might start to be close to what the guys have delivered. I am well and truly stoked and cannot thank them enough.
Featuring primarily music from other people, including favourites of ours such as Untold and Pole, they’ve also put in an unofficial (but approved) remix they did for Klaus Roeder, and it’s an absolute corker.
The name of the mix comes from Simon, as I asked him for some words for the post he didn’t give me anything but mentioned that the mix was the ‘aural equivalent of a blanket, useful for the winter days’ – and well that’s the perfect description.
For more on LV be sure to check their myspace where you can purchase all previous releases, all of which we heartily recommend especially their Hyperdub plates. Look out for more from them in 2010 on Hyperdub as well as Soul Jazz and Keysound recordings among others. We’ll be sure to let you know and air the new music as it comes. They were also talking about a session they did with Tokyo’s Quarta330 when he was town last November, and I really hope something comes of that as it would be a thoroughly entertaining combo.
So without further ado, grab the mix, sit back, wrap up and prepare to go in deep – this one is a trip.

Rhythm Incursions – Best of 09 pt 2
December 24, 2009 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent
We wrap up 2009 with part 2 of our ‘best of’ mix. This is the last show of the year and continues to run down some of our favourite tracks from the last 12 months.
The mix starts with our second ‘Labels of 09′ mini feature looking at Ramp Recordings, a label that for me has had an incredible year and put out good music, consistently without worrying about scenes, genres and things like that. Doing eclectic isn’t necessarily hard though, doing it well however is and for me Ramp is one of those labels who managed to do just that: serve up a truly eclectic mix of releases, artists and styles and do so with a cohesion, quality control and consistency that only makes the music shine that much more. Add to this some quality artwork and an ear for snapping up producers that are bubbling under, like FaltyDL, Shortstuff or Tokimonsta, and you have a label which you need to make time for if you haven’t yet.
As I said they’ve had a rather busy year with something close to ten or so releases so I’ve managed to fit as much as I can in this mini feature with pretty much one track from every release this year, bar one or two. If you like what you hear then check the website and catch up with some seriously good music.
Elsewhere part 2 of the best of 09 features music from the likes of Darkstar, Peverelist, Joker, Dorian Concept, Daedelus, Clutchy Hopkins, Soundspecies, Mount Kimbie, Hudson Mohawke, Floating Points, Machinedrum, Poirier, Blue Daisy, Jamie Vex’d, Quarta330 and many more.
As usual tracklist and download links below. And if you haven’t yet may we suggest you sign up to the newsletter, RSS feed or iTunes feed and this way you’ll never miss a show.
So that’s it for 2009, and the first decade of this century/millenium. Many thanks to all our listeners, all the labels and artists we’ve worked with and who’ve supported us, all our guests, our extended family, DDay One, Mr Trick, 2tall and everyone else. It’s been a great year and here’s to 2010!
Peace
Laurent
