And so we reach the end of the year and the obligatory retrospective edition. This year we’ve opted for a slightly different format, bringing together our three regular shows – RIPL, RIRS and Rhythm Incursions – into one bumper 3h edition that looks back at our favourite music from 2011. With each of us selecting one hour of music, this end of year show features primarily music and tracks which we’ve previously aired as well as a few additions culled from releases and/or artists we’ve supported this year.

We start with the Rhythm Incursions mix presented by Laurent which features a mini feature on the label of the year which is Keysound Recordings, the London label headed by Blackdown. Despite having had a fairly quiet year in comparison to other labels, Keysound’s put out three outstanding albums from Damu, LV & Joshua Idehen and Sully, as well as a handful of 12″s that have all been featured on previous shows and been staples of many sets. As the adage goes quality not quantity and while it’s true that this has actually been a busy year for the label we feel that they really deserve the accolade. Alongside Keysound, the mix features regulars from the past year as well as our favourite releases including Om Unit, Shabazz Palaces, Slugabed, EAN, Kode 9, Yosi Horikawa (with his track from the Nihon Kizuna compilation), NastyNasty, Mark Pritchard under both his solo and Africa Hitech aliases, Machinedrum, Sepalcure and 1000Names.

Primus Luta meanwhile also showcases his favourites – many recognisable from his own 2011 shows – in his mix. A straight up one hour mix with no talking it features some of this year’s best releases from both the electronic and rap world with the likes of 2562, Busdriver, Kendrick Lamar, Blk.Adonis, Welder, Shigeto, Lorn, Siriusmo, Madlib and Dibiase, DRC Music alongside Om Unit, Sepalcure and Sully who all make additional appearances.

And as for Raid System they opted to do another top 20 countdown of their favourite tracks of the year, though this time it isn’t live. Their mix starts with a short run down of our Nihon Kizuna release as well as Broken Haze’s joint EP with B.Bravo before getting into their top 20 for the year featuring many of the artists and labels they’ve been supporting including Joker, Nino, Rustie, Hudson Mohawke, Funkystepz, Zdot, Bobby Tank, Toddska, Starkey, Daniel Haaksman, Knight Riderz, S-Type, Munchi and more.

So there you have it, 2011 the year that was. As always a big thank you to all our listeners and fans, all the labels and artists and a special thanks to everyone who has kindly donated via the Nihon Kizuna compilation we put together while in Japan in March this year. We’ll see you in 2012 with the first show of the year our new BLN.FM syndication, the first of which is curated by Raid System. And so the end of year arrives and with it our last show of 2010. The last of our end of year shows, this one follows the 2009 best of mix I did last year though instead of spreading across two shows I tried to squeeze all I could into one session. Make no mistake, despite the naysayers and the doom and gloom surrounding the music industry in general, for me 2010 has been a rather good year music wise. On one side there’s seemingly more music than ever, and with that comes a certain lack of quality control. On the other, this lack of quality control and breakdown of the traditional models within the industry has I believe given various labels and artists in the ‘underground’ a lot more potential for flourishing. As the old saying goes, you’ve just got to look closer to find the gold among all the noise.

I originally had 160 odd tracks earmarked for this show. A couple of days of ruminating and trying things out and I managed to keep it down to 60 or so, as well as the mini feature on All City Records, my label of the year (as you should know by now – they did two guest mixes for us earlier this month). In the process of putting the mix together it first occurred to me that if you consider the amount of music I received this year for the show (at a guess I’d say 500 odd releases, maybe even more) then there really is a big job of sifting through everything to find the stuff that’s actually worthy of a best of mix. Even then I had to leave stuff out that I wished could have been fitted. The criteria (if you will) was a mix of what I’d played on the show in the last 12 months and which I considered to be well above par, as well as tracks that have been staples in my DJ sets and tracks from albums that have barely left my portable player all year. The result is the following tracklist. Apologies to those I missed, but if anything it’s the perfect excuse for you to go over all the shows we’ve put out in the last year (hint hint). I also tried to avoid too much duplication with the previous two end of year shows from Primus Luta and Raid System.

So that’s it for 2010, another year under the belt and onwards. Rhythm Incursions has seen a lot of changes this year – new website, new presenters, new regular guest series. It’s been an absolute blast, and I want to thank everyone who’s made the show what it is and who works out of their own time towards continuing to make this one of the finer podcast series out there. In no specific order much love and thanks to Primus Luta, XLII, Broken Haze, Dday One and Leeor at FoF for their work. A big thank you as well to all the labels, artists and PR who send us stuff and take time to talk to us, sometimes even bowing to our pressures for guest spots. We roll into the month of December with the prerequisite end of year best of’s and playlists. Up first is Primus Luta with his RIPL show. He runs down his favourite joints of 2010, well the ones he managed to fit in, using his award system – which he premiered back in the summer with the mid-year awards.

In there you’ll find a veritable who’s who of labels and artists we’ve supported this year and since we started. Labels like Planet Mu (who got label of the year from me in November), Hyperdub, Warp, Brainfeeder, R&S, Project Mooncircle all feature alongside Alpha Pup which Primus decided to make his label of the year. The mini feature looks at the Alpha Pup’s output as well as that of the labels it distributes like Elm & Oak, Brainfeeder and Friends of Friends.

Here’s some words from the man himself on the show:

Awwe man this was probably my hardest show to compile, because there was just way too much good music this year. I feel bad for all of the amazing stuff that I left off. Even more, the whole time I’m compiling goodness just keeps dropping. Makes for an exciting 2011, but first of course a little recap of the incredible 2010. Back in August we did the RIPL Mid-Year Report, and so for this episode we’ve got the 2010 RIPL Awards. Tried to cover a good spectrum of things with this and give the respect where it was due, but again there was just way too much music to possibly represent it all in just one show. See you in 2011, promises to be killer.

We won’t bore you with more words and instead just let you get stuck in with what is definitely a great opening show for our end of year recap. It’s going to make my end of year show certainly more difficult to compile!

The last show of the month sees the return of our regular podcast, following the missed October show due to this little thing called life getting in the way. Both Primus Luta and myself missed October, though Raid System held the fort alongside DDay One. Primus came back earlier this month with a bumper 2 hour show and this show does much the same with a lot of forthcoming and exclusive bits and a look over some of my favourites in recent months.

This month we also have a mini feature on the excellent Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space release, forthcoming on Tectonic on the 6th of December. For the occasion we’re showcasing three tracks from the release, and don’t forget you can download the Guido dub in our download section still. The album is killer and I recommend you go cop it when it’s out, definitely the dubstep release of the year.

Now Mu’s output this year has been extensive, and of outstanding quality in many ways, so rather than a thorough mini feature I’ve opted for a 3 track taster of some of my favourite releases of theirs including Vex’d, Rudi Zygadlo and DJ Roc. I’ve also realised that this month’s show marks the 2 year anniversary of my officially presenting the Rhythm Incursions show, taking over from Mr Trick. Unintentionally this month is also the first time the show comes at you in a semi live format, that is it was recorded in one take on Serato as opposed to the usual Ableton prerecorded sessions. As a result the audio is a little rougher than usual, especially because my set up is in transit and I’ll be hopefully getting a new, shinier set up in the coming month. Still I hope the small technical hiccups don’t distract from the music too much and do let us know your feedback in the comments.

Sometimes life gets in the way, especially when like us here at Rhythm Incursions you do something for the love out of your own time. Last month both Primus Luta and myself had to cancel our regular shows due to various life stuff getting in the way – in his case a recent trip to Seattle for the Decibel festival and some rehearsals for his new CSS show (remember the debut mix here for download). The plus side of missing a show though is that there’s plenty to go through the next time around, and so this month’s RIPL show comes packing with fresh bits with just over 2 hours of music for your ears.

We start the last week of what has been a very busy month here on Rhythm Inc with the first show from our second new team of presenters all the way live (well sort of) from Tokyo, Japan. Following the debut of Primus Luta last week with his new regular RIPL show (peep it here if you missed it) we’re very happy to welcome XLII and Broken Haze to the Rhythm Inc family for a new monthly podcast under the banner of their Raid System label and collective. Seeing as how I’m feeling highly inspired for names, we decided to take Primus’ idea of RIPL and make this new show RIRS. Bit more of a mouth full that’s for sure but hey. If you have a better idea answers on the back of a postcard in the comments below please.

Regular listeners will remember Raid System from a series of guest mixes we aired earlier this year featuring Broken Haze, XLII and Ken One. Following this we got talking with XLII and much like happened with Primus Luta it felt like a very logical thing to invite the guys on board for a regular show. So every month the dynamic duo of XLII and Broken Haze will be bringing you some fresh new music, exclusives and more from their label, friends and artists worldwide alongside some light hearted banter and presentation styles in English and Japanese. Considering that Japan is now our third biggest country for visits it’s only right for us to rep a show for the Japanese massive. 日本人のみんなさんよろしくおねがいします！

As with Primus’ first show, this is a test run of sort while we iron out all the kinks before officially launching our new schedule in June and over the summer. So please do let us know of any feedback in the comments section.

XLII and Broken Haze have put together a selection of new and forthcoming releases for you this month. Each show will feature segments presented by each of them, going back to back. I’m very happy to introduce our first (of two) brand new regular presenters to the Rhythm Incursions airwaves. Primus Luta from AvantUrb joins us for a new monthly show direct from the East coast of the United states. Alongside DDay One’s semi-regular show from L.A we’ve now got two presenters repping both sides of the country.

Regular listeners will remember the name as he’s guested on the show quite a few times in the last year, first with the retrospective Beat Construction mix in April, and then with 3 parts of his four-part The Vanguard series earlier this year. An avid music fan and musician, he holds the same interest in new music as we do and brings to the show the same open minded and embracing attitude that we try and put into ours. After chatting by email, following his work and putting his mixes on the show for the best part of a year, it felt like a natural progression to bring him on board.

Here’s some words from the man himself regarding the new show, which has been dubbed RIPL:

For the first episode of RIPL the aim was to give a broad idea of the type of stuff you can expect to hear over the coming months. This is an incredible period in music, with folk from the four corners really representing at the leading edge, where sounds and styles are being born every minute. We like to umbrella these into singular genres for simplicity, but the truth of the matter is that genre’s themselves have become modular.

Each genre, each sub-genre, is like a pebble dropping into the ocean of sound sending out ripples in concentric circles. They bounce off of each other, absorb one another’s energy, intersect, and create new ripples, new sounds, new genres, new sub genres. This show is all about the ripples. Okay I just made that up. It sounded good though, nowhere near as good as the music itself. Bring on the RIPL!!

Primus Luta will be holding it down on the second week of each month starting next month with his RIPL show. He will be followed by our other new presenters XLII and Broken Haze from Raid System in Tokyo – who regular listeners will remember we featured recently in a 3-part special – who will hold down the third week of the month starting in June (their debut show goes out next week). And then on the last week of the month our regular show will continue to go out. So that’ll be 3 times the amount of regular music coming your way each month, each from a different continent but with the same aim of bringing discerning music to discerning ears.

A deep space transmission reached us at Rhythm Incursions this week, coming from somewhere familiar and signed by none other than 2tall, universal astronaut, extended Rhythm Inc family member and producer at large. The sounds of the transmission are warm and comforting, much needed in these cold and snowy times. Once we decoded the transmission, the result was an hour of the latest sounds from across the planet beamed straight into your speakers.

So we suggest you turn it up to 11 and strap up for a race across the universe carried by basslines and some of the finest beats, new and old.

This month’s show comes literally in the nick of time, with less than 24 hours to go before we hit February. Still the benefit of a slight delay combined with the beginning of the new year is that we have a ridiculous amount of new music to go through this month, and I mean a lot.

One month in, and 2009 is already shaping up to be an interesting year with some really decent full length releases in the first few months of the year, most of which are highlighted in this month’s show. From L.A to Australia, England to Japan the show takes in new tracks from the likes of Exile, Filastine, Harmonic 313, Jneiro Jarel, Sleeper, Ras G, Two Fingers (aka Amont Tobin, Sway and Doublick) and Lukid among others.
