Rhythm Incursions / Primus Luta aka RIPL – May ’10

I’m very happy to introduce our first (of two) brand new regular presenters to the Rhythm Incursions airwaves. Primus Luta from AvantUrb joins us for a new monthly show direct from the East coast of the United states. Alongside DDay One’s semi-regular show from L.A we’ve now got two presenters repping both sides of the country.
Regular listeners will remember the name as he’s guested on the show quite a few times in the last year, first with the retrospective Beat Construction mix in April, and then with 3 parts of his four-part The Vanguard series earlier this year. An avid music fan and musician, he holds the same interest in new music as we do and brings to the show the same open minded and embracing attitude that we try and put into ours. After chatting by email, following his work and putting his mixes on the show for the best part of a year, it felt like a natural progression to bring him on board.
Here’s some words from the man himself regarding the new show, which has been dubbed RIPL:
For the first episode of RIPL the aim was to give a broad idea of the type of stuff you can expect to hear over the coming months. This is an incredible period in music, with folk from the four corners really representing at the leading edge, where sounds and styles are being born every minute. We like to umbrella these into singular genres for simplicity, but the truth of the matter is that genre’s themselves have become modular.
Each genre, each sub-genre, is like a pebble dropping into the ocean of sound sending out ripples in concentric circles. They bounce off of each other, absorb one another’s energy, intersect, and create new ripples, new sounds, new genres, new sub genres. This show is all about the ripples. Okay I just made that up. It sounded good though, nowhere near as good as the music itself. Bring on the RIPL!!
Primus Luta will be holding it down on the second week of each month starting next month with his RIPL show. He will be followed by our other new presenters XLII and Broken Haze from Raid System in Tokyo – who regular listeners will remember we featured recently in a 3-part special – who will hold down the third week of the month starting in June (their debut show goes out next week). And then on the last week of the month our regular show will continue to go out. So that’ll be 3 times the amount of regular music coming your way each month, each from a different continent but with the same aim of bringing discerning music to discerning ears.
Please leave your feedback on this show so we can continue to build and take in your input as well.
Enjoy!

Rhythm Incursions – October 09
November 5, 2009 by Laurent

Despite it being nearly one week into November, we’re bringing you the October show which suffered the delaying combo of both my laptop dying and a rather nasty cold hitting me in the same week. The show was actually wrapped 2 weeks ago but we couldn’t get it out till now. Lucky you though, as you’ll be getting another show in a few weeks with our November edition.
I realised as I was putting the tracklist together that for some reason this month features a rather high number of freely available tracks. This is in part a reflection of my own listening habits (and the fact I spend way too much time on the internet) but also I think of the move by artists and labels to make more music available freely as a way to promote paying releases, gigs and other merchandise. Lastly I would also say that the increasing number of free tracks in our playlists this year is a reflection of the increase in quality in free music. Whereas before free tracks where often throwaway material, today an increasing number of artists are releasing bootlegs, remixes and their own tracks for free and keeping a high quality control on it. Again I think this is something that plays into the aforementioned ‘free music as promotion’ vehicle. All the artists with a freely available track in this month’s show also have physical, paying releases and quite a few are actually established artists in their own ‘scenes’.
What about the music though? This month we take in a rather wide range of music, reflecting the diversity of what’s been trickling into our inbox/hands. From the psychedelic meets Afghani traditional music of Ariana Delawari to straight beats (and some incredible flips) from KenLo, fLako, Fulgeance and Dibiase via tribal house vibes from Blue Daisy, 21st century boogie from Dam Funk, hard-hitting hip hop from Kids in Tracksuits and Mr Lif and forward-thinking productions from Om Unit, Mike Slott and Talen. And that’s only part of it, there’s more and it’s all high quality as far as I’m concerned.
This month’s mini-feature is a tie-in with the 5th anniversary of the Hyperdub label. Headed by Kode 9, Hyperdub has long been a favourite at Rhythm Inc, with Trick regularly playing the label’s early releases as both the show and label share roughly the same birthdays. To celebrate their anniversary Hyperdub have curated an incredible compilation, called ’5′, spanning two CDs or 5 12″s and featuring classic material from the label’s archive, unreleased one-offs and 15 or so brand new productions from the label’s artists and friends including names like Flying Lotus, Mala, Martin, Samiyam, Ikonika, Quarta330, and more. It’s fair to say that ’5′ is the final nail in the coffin for lesser labels, if it was even needed, that shows just how influential and forward thinking Hyperdub has been as an independent over the years. From its humble beginnings to its current wide palette of sounds, Hyperdub continues to do what everyone least expects, and that’s just one of many reasons why we love them and their music. For the feature we’ve got four tracks from the compilation taking in The Bug under his King Midas Sound alias, Mala, Kode 9 and Samiyam – music as different as it comes and yet somehow logically intertwined.
So enough with the words, sit back and crank the volume for 2h of the latest and freshest music. And stay tuned for some special shows coming up in the month. For now enjoy!

The good people over at Friends of Friends have announced the release date for the remix EP of their first release, which we announced a few months back and tracks from which we aired on the show in March. On top of that they’re also launching a remix contest for one of the tracks from the original EP.
‘Friends of Friends Remixed’ features remixes of the original tracks by Daedelus and Jogger from Nosaj Thing, Mexicans with Guns, Grahm Zilla, Michna and Eliot Lipp among others. The remix EP will be released on July 28th. In addition T-shirts made exclusively for the first release are still available on the label’s site. The t-shirts come in a bundle with a copy of the EP and a download card for the remix EP. Check the FoF site for details and to buy.
As for the remix project, visit this link for full details. By submitting your email address you’ll be sent the stems for Jogger’s ‘Nice Tights’ track and then the rest is up to you. See below for additional details:
One winner will be selected by FOF Music and Jogger, the second by you, the fans. Both winners will have there remix posted on the MXP4 FOF Music widget, along with the original and official remixes. Winners will also receive a merch pack with music, t-shirt, stickers and other surprises. The contest will run from June 18 to July 19, 2009. Winners will be announced on or around July 22.

Despite having come down with a nasty bit of flu we soldier on this month with another show full of musical goodness, including plenty of new and exciting forthcoming bits. Just ignore the gruff tone of voice. EDIT: I’ve also just realised I forgot to edit the intro, so it doesn’t repeat for ten seconds. Apologies all but I thought it best to put the show out rather than wait another couple of hours. It goes with the whole being ill thing.
2009 continues to be a pretty interesting year, with each month bringing new releases from new and established artists and labels, and we’re not about to complain. This month is no different with our selection box full of some great music including new bits from the likes of Bibio, AM Architect, DOOM, Take, Lorn, Daedelus, Nosaj Thing, Martyn, Hudson Mohawke and many more. From downtempo moods to straight up hip hop boom bap to deep dubby styles and mashed up electronica and chiptune, it’s all covered one way or another.
The mini feature this month looks at the recently launched Friends of Friends label out in L.A., which we wrote about a few weeks back. As usual check the playlist below for full details, and links to where you can buy the music. If you like what you hear, go out there and support the artists.
And stay tuned to the site for more guest mixes in the coming month, including the last of our L.A. specials and a guest mix from the Musique Large label in Paris, as well as more to be announced. For now though, sit back and enjoy!

Friends of Friends – a friendly kind of label
We received word of a new label in the last week or so which combines great music with an interesting concept that makes the most of the current situation in the music industry.
Friends of Friends is the name of the label. Based in L.A their first release features L.A ‘legend’ Daedelus and Jogger. We’ll let them explain the concept in more detail:
The concept in short for our inaugural release is FoF invites an artist to join the FoF family by signing on to do a split EP; they in turn invite another musician or group to complete the split release and commission a designer to create the EP’s artwork on a limited edition T-Shirt which will include a download card (100% seed paper card). Included in the download will be the release, exclusive remixes and special content: ie videos, mixes etc
So as you can see it’s definitely not your average release but what really struck us is that this is exactly the kind of release and idea that can help bridge the current issues between physical and digital and how artists can make money in an age where music is seen as increasingly disposable and people want the music product free but are actually willing to pay for good quality, relevant physical products like t-shirts, designs etc…
The release features 3 tracks each from Daedelus and Jogger, and the remixes come from the likes of Nosaj Thing, Thunderheist and more. We’ve had the EP for a while now and we’re definitely liking the sound of it. Expect to hear some of the music in coming shows and if like us FoF caught your interest and raised your curiosity then head over to the site to check where and how to buy. The first EP is out now.
