<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

We wrap up the summer with a special ‘live’ show recorded last weekend during one of our Maisonette Electronique Ustream shows. The session features both XLII from Raid System, who was over in Europe for the summer from Tokyo, and Om Unit who co-hosts the Maisonette Electronique Ustream show we’ve been doing since the beginning of the year.

So this podcast is a combined Rhythm Inc and RIRS session with Om Unit dropping in a short selection towards the end of the show. It features a wide selection of new music and recent favourites from all of us including Thundercat, Danny Brown, Darkhouse Family, Touchy Subject, Zed Bias, Damu and Sully on Keysound Recordings, Shlohmo, Dizz1, Walton, Cardopusher, Prison Garde xxxy, Kuedo, Goth Trad, Throwing Snow, Jonwayne, Krampfhaft and more.

The first hour is mixed and presented by XLII with the second hour presented by myself with Om Unit joining in for the last 20 minutes. Full tracklist is below and as always you can stream and/or download, or simply subscribe to the RSS or iTunes feed to receive all the shows directly.

And remember to check out the Maisonette Electronique Ustream channel from which we broadcast at least once a month now with guests which have in the last few months included the likes of Lorn, Kid Kanevil, Daisuke Tanabe and Kutmah! You can also check all the archived streams here.

<itunes:summary>We wrap up the summer with a special 'live' show recorded last weekend during one of our Maisonette Electronique Ustream shows. The session features both XLII from Raid System, who was over in Europe for the summer from Tokyo, and Om Unit who co-hosts the Maisonette Electronique Ustream show we've been doing since the beginning of the year.

If you follow us on the twitternets you probably already know how EXCITED (yes I used caps on purposes there) we are about Tectonic‘s forthcoming compilation which brings together 12 of dubstep’s finest producers with legendary Jamaican dub producer Scientist.

Coming out on December 6 and entitled ‘Scientist Launches Dubstep Into Outer Space’ the compilation brings 12 unreleased tracks from the likes of The Bug aka King Midas Sound, Guido, Pinch, Mala, Loefah, Kode 9, RSD, Shackleton and more and sees them dubbed by Scientist – unleashing the full extent of his arcane knowledge and in the process realising a timely and historical link between one of dubstep’s founding inspirations and the sound’s homes in London and Bristol. It’s not just an exceptionally well put together and A&R-ed release (I mean it includes dubs like Mala’s ‘City Cycle’) it’s also a sonic tour de force, both on the original and Scientist dub versions. Lastly it’s also a great history lesson, showing the differences between dub and its European child in fascinating ways.

To celebrate the release Tectonic have arranged a UK tour with Scientist vs The Upsetters, Pinch, Mala and Loefah – who will be making a stop in London this Thursday for a special room 1 session at Fabric. Details and tickets here. The night runs 9pm till 3, tickets are £12.50.

In addition to this tour, Tectonic have also released two free tracks from the album via Topspin – the dubs of the King Midas Sound and Guido tracks. You can download the King Midas Sound dub via XLR8R and the Guido one below. We’ll also be doing a mini feature on the release for this month’s show – stay tuned for more on that. And you can expect us to be playing tracks from this for a while longer too. Oh and if you were sharp enough you may have heard previews on our inaugural Ustream this past weekend – you can hear a recording of it here, the Scientist previews are roughly 1 hour or so in I think.

That’s it for now, big thanks to Tectonic and Fabric for the freebies and let me say it again – this is the essential dubstep release of the year, if not the decade. Absolutely unmissable.

And so here we are at the end of the year, and the decade. Let us therefore indulge in this most seasonal of traditions with a two-part, end of year ‘best of’ show for 2009. The idea was to build on last year’s first installment, and then before I knew it I’d sat down in front of the computer with a shortlist of 100+ tracks and the idea of actually doing a proper mix as opposed to a simple selection of tracks. As with last year there is no talking this time round, just pure music selection for your enjoyment.

We start with part 1 and 50 odd tracks which have all been highlights of the year here at Rhythm Inc towers from the likes of Architeq, Paul White, Alice Russell, Raekwon, DOOM, Oh No, Heliocentrics, Loops Haunt, LuckyMe, Robot Koch, Milanese, King Midas Sound, 2nd Class Citizen and many, many more. The selection is a nice representation of this year’s playlists too with a couple of previously un-aired goodies thrown in on top. As always complete tracklist below with link to the mix for those that aren’t subscribed to our feed or iTunes channels (hint hint).

As I said this best of show is more of a ‘mix’ than our normal shows – everything has been mixed and mashed up to allow me to fit as much music as I can in 75 minutes and still give every track a chance to shine.

Part two will be dropping very shortly, either on Christmas eve or Boxing day (the day after xmas) – it all depends on how much I manage to get done tonight. It will feature another 50 or so tracks from our best of 2009 list as well as the second ‘Labels of 09′ mini-feature, this time looking at the output of Ramp Recordings which is by far one of the stand out labels of the year for us. And don’t forget to check last month’s show for part of our ‘Labels of 09′ mini-feature which looked at the excellent One Handed Music.

So I won’t keep you any longer. Get stuck in, lie back, crank up the volume, ignore the family members and enjoy the first half of our best of 09 show!

We reach the last but one show of the year with yet more exclusives and brand new music for your listening enjoyment. In addition, the mini feature this month is part 1 of a ‘Labels of 2009′ feature as I couldn’t just choose one label this year so instead decided to shine a light on two labels who both deserve it in my opinion.

Music wise we’ve got some exclusive previews of music from Om Unit, Loops Haunt, Debruit, Leatherette and Ernesto Gonzales, all of which will be dropping in the first quarter of 2010. Alongside these we have the usual fresh music from a host of artists and labels including Hyperdub, Ramp Recordings, Tectonic, Dutty Artz, the amazing Mr Chop release on Now Again/Five Day Weekend, the psychedelic new Edan release, Madlib and Strong Arm Steady, Non+Herrmutt Lobby, SA-RA, DJ Food, Ben Sharpa and many more.

As for the mini feature, well part 1 of the ‘Labels of 2009′ shines a light on One Handed MUsic, the London-based independent headed by Alex Chase (also responsible for Stones Throw in Europe). Despite, or most likely because, its small roster of artists, 2009 has been a good year for the label release wise with the Paul White debut album, another 2 EPs from the prolific London beat-maker, an EP from Bullion the label’s other, hugely promising London artist, and an amazing EP from Fulgeance, the French MPC master who does ‘chopped & screwed house’ (as Mr Trick called it) like no one else can. The releases aren’t just the reason why I choose OHM as a label of the year – it’s everything else, like Alex’s obviously on point A&R and the artwork and attention that has gone into every release, whether physical or digital (anyone who’s seen the hand-sewn pillow cases for the Paul White album will testity). So I’ll let the music do the talking with a selection of five tracks from this year’s releases. Look out for OHM to continue their rise in 2010 with more Paul White, a long-awaited Tranquill EP and more.

Part 2 of the mini-feature will be coming next month, looking at Ramp Recordings, which ironically Alex Chase pointed out was also run by someone from Suffolk, that is Tom@Ramp. So looks like Suffolk had it on lock for ’09 then – who would have thought. The December show will most likely be similar to the one I put together last year, ie. a best of 09 mix with the label mini feature included in there. Look out for details soon, it’ll drop just before xmas in time for the seasonal overload.

For now though, sit back, crank up the volume and enjoy. And remember check the tracklist for full details of websites and where to buy the music and go out and support if you like what you hear!

In addition, the mini feature this month is part 1 of a 'Labels of 2009' feature as I couldn't just choose one label this year so instead decided to shine a light on two labels who both deserve it in my opinion.

Music wise we've got some exclusive previews of music from Om Unit, Loops Haunt, Debruit, Leatherette and Ernesto Gonzales, all of which will be dropping in the first quarter of 2010.

As for the mini feature, well part 1 of the 'Labels of 2009' shines a light on One Handed MUsic, the London-based independent headed by Alex Chase (also responsible for Stones Throw in Europe). Despite, or most likely because, its small roster of artists, 2009 has been a good year for the label release wise with the Paul White debut album, another 2 EPs from the prolific London beat-maker, an EP from Bullion the label's other, hugely promising London artist, and an amazing EP from Fulgeance, the French MPC master who does 'chopped & screwed house' (as Mr Trick called it) like no one else can. The releases aren't just the reason why I choose OHM as a label of the year - it's everything else, like Alex's obviously on point A&R and the artwork and attention that has gone into every release, whether physical or digital (anyone who's seen the hand-sewn pillow cases for the Paul White album will testity). So I'll let the music do the talking with a selection of five tracks from this year's releases.

So looks like Suffolk had it on lock for '09 then - who would have thought. The December show will most likely be similar to the one I put together last year, ie. a best of 09 mix with the label mini feature included in there. Look out for details soon, it'll drop just before xmas in time for the seasonal overload.

For now though, sit back, crank up the volume and enjoy. And remember check the tracklist for full details of websites and where to buy the music and go out and support if you like what you hear!

Despite it being nearly one week into November, we’re bringing you the October show which suffered the delaying combo of both my laptop dying and a rather nasty cold hitting me in the same week. The show was actually wrapped 2 weeks ago but we couldn’t get it out till now. Lucky you though, as you’ll be getting another show in a few weeks with our November edition.

I realised as I was putting the tracklist together that for some reason this month features a rather high number of freely available tracks. This is in part a reflection of my own listening habits (and the fact I spend way too much time on the internet) but also I think of the move by artists and labels to make more music available freely as a way to promote paying releases, gigs and other merchandise. Lastly I would also say that the increasing number of free tracks in our playlists this year is a reflection of the increase in quality in free music. Whereas before free tracks where often throwaway material, today an increasing number of artists are releasing bootlegs, remixes and their own tracks for free and keeping a high quality control on it. Again I think this is something that plays into the aforementioned ‘free music as promotion’ vehicle. All the artists with a freely available track in this month’s show also have physical, paying releases and quite a few are actually established artists in their own ‘scenes’.

What about the music though? This month we take in a rather wide range of music, reflecting the diversity of what’s been trickling into our inbox/hands. From the psychedelic meets Afghani traditional music of Ariana Delawari to straight beats (and some incredible flips) from KenLo, fLako, Fulgeance and Dibiase via tribal house vibes from Blue Daisy, 21st century boogie from Dam Funk, hard-hitting hip hop from Kids in Tracksuits and Mr Lif and forward-thinking productions from Om Unit, Mike Slott and Talen. And that’s only part of it, there’s more and it’s all high quality as far as I’m concerned.

This month’s mini-feature is a tie-in with the 5th anniversary of the Hyperdub label. Headed by Kode 9, Hyperdub has long been a favourite at Rhythm Inc, with Trick regularly playing the label’s early releases as both the show and label share roughly the same birthdays. To celebrate their anniversary Hyperdub have curated an incredible compilation, called ’5′, spanning two CDs or 5 12″s and featuring classic material from the label’s archive, unreleased one-offs and 15 or so brand new productions from the label’s artists and friends including names like Flying Lotus, Mala, Martin, Samiyam, Ikonika, Quarta330, and more. It’s fair to say that ’5′ is the final nail in the coffin for lesser labels, if it was even needed, that shows just how influential and forward thinking Hyperdub has been as an independent over the years. From its humble beginnings to its current wide palette of sounds, Hyperdub continues to do what everyone least expects, and that’s just one of many reasons why we love them and their music. For the feature we’ve got four tracks from the compilation taking in The Bug under his King Midas Sound alias, Mala, Kode 9 and Samiyam – music as different as it comes and yet somehow logically intertwined.

So enough with the words, sit back and crank the volume for 2h of the latest and freshest music. And stay tuned for some special shows coming up in the month. For now enjoy!

Right then, we roll into the summer months like a heatwave with a show packed to the rafters with new music, exclusives and a few old favourites. In a bit of a departure from our normal shows, I opted for more of a mix feel to the show this month. With so much music to showcase that was the logical option, though you still have the pleasure of my unimmitable presenting style, complete with dodgy French accent.

On the show this month we have new music from Nadsroic, Mike Slott, Dimlite, Danny Breaks, Scienz of Life, 2nd Class Citizen, Ceschi, Dizz1, Mad EP, DJ Food, King Midas Sound, Architeq, Om Unit, Memory9, Wrongtom vs Roots Manuva, Loops Haunt, Paul White, Fulgeance, FaltyDL, Joker, The Grouch, Busdriver, Ben Sharpa, Machine Drum, Waajeed, Dorian Concept, and more.

And if all that wasn’t enough we’ve also got two mini features this month: one on the excellent new Beat Dimensions vol2 compilation from Jay Scarlett and Cinnaman and the other on Nosaj Thing, who releases his debut album this month on Alpha Pup. The Nosaj Thing feature was long overdue considering how much we’ve enjoyed and supported his music on the show over the last year.

So without further ado, get stuck in with Rhythm Incursions May, 75 minutes of musical goodness to help bring in the summer vibes. Full details on where to buy all the releases can be found in the playlist.

As a last note a big thank you to all the listeners and visitors who have made Rhythm Incursions such a popular show according to our stats: we’re clocking an average of 1200 downloads a day across the site, which is no mean feat and a pleasure to know considering Rhythm Incursions is a totally independent show run by ourselves in our own time. The best reward is to know that people are enjoying what we do, so once more a big thank you to all listeners past, present and future.

Enjoy!

<itunes:summary>Right then, we roll into the summer months like a heatwave with a show packed to the rafters with new music, exclusives and a few old favourites.

And if all that wasn't enough we've also got two mini features this month: one on the excellent new Beat Dimensions vol2 compilation from Jay Scarlett and Cinnaman and the other on Nosaj Thing, who releases his debut album this month on Alpha Pup. The Nosaj Thing feature was long overdue considering how much we've enjoyed and supported his music on the show over the last year.

So without further ado, get stuck in with Rhythm Incursions May, 75 minutes of musical goodness to help bring in the summer vibes. Full details on where to buy all the releases can be found in the playlist.

As a last note a big thank you to all the listeners and visitors who have made Rhythm Incursions such a popular show according to our stats: we're clocking an average of 1200 downloads a day across the site, which is no mean feat and a pleasure to know considering Rhythm Incursions is a totally independent show run by ourselves in our own time. The best reward is to know that people are enjoying what we do, so once more a big thank you to all listeners past, present and future.

Enjoy!

Right then. You might have been wondering when the hell this mix was going to be online, and rightly too considering we announced it a while back. In the end, with life and other fun things getting in the way we decided to hold it back until the festivities were starting, kind of like a virtual serving of extra stuffing. And being that it’s the season of over indulging and excess, this month’s show is a best of 08 mix special: no talking, just 70 mins of some of the best and our favouritest music of the year. Whether you’re enjoying the festivities with the family, alone or with friends, away or at home, at work or on holiday (I did work last on xmas day so I know it’s not an impossibility, big up those who are!) we hope you enjoy our last show of the year.

Not only does this show include some of our favourite singles and album tracks from 2008, it also comes with a xmas-sized mini feature looking at the ouput of the Hyperdub label, which gets label of the year by a long mile, regardless of genre.

2008 has definitely been an interesting year musically to say the least. Trick remarked earlier on in the month that album wise it hasn’t been an exceptional year, which I’d have to agree with to an extent. A few albums do stand out, like say The Bug’s ‘London Zoo,’ and between putting this mix together and doing the obligatory end of year list thing over on my blog I’ve come to the realisation that this year it’s much more singles, EPs and certain album tracks that stand out for me. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing either.

This end of year special podcast reflects all of this with tracks from some of the year’s stand out albums, singles, EPs, and even a couple of unreleased numbers that have created quite a lot of interest on and offline. This show is also definitely a bit of a who’s who of the artists and the labels that have populated our tracklists on the regular since Rhythm Incursions moved to its podcast-only format back in June, with the likes of Nosaj Thing, Flying Lotus, Kode 9, Maga Bo, The Bug, J Dilla and more.

Another thing reflected in the mix is the return of the producer to the front in certain corners of the hip hop world (see explosion of interest around Flying Lotus for proof of that) and how this return has been distinctively led by a more awkward and experimental approach to instrumental tracks, also echoed in the work of certain producers affiliated with the dubstep, grime and other electronic scenes. While far from encompassing everything that happened this year, these two musical ‘tendencies’ have definitely had a big impact on fans, producers and DJs alike.

So that’s about it. We’re officially done for 08. Massive thanks to you the listeners for your continued support and a big big shout to the entire Rhythm Incursions clique: Mr Trick, Waxfactor, Carlo, Joey Beats, Dday One and the extended fam. Also a big thank you to all the artists and labels who have supported the show this year through their music and guest appearances.

Look out for more of the same in 2009, as we roll out some very tasty guest mixes and new shows from all the regulars in January (who knows Waxfactor might even come out of his hiding lair). If you’re new to the show then be sure to check our archives and the feed where you can find all the previous shows available for download (and there’s been some corkers this year).

And finally if you’re still feeling somewhat hungry or are looking for something else to get stuck into, then check out Turntable Radio’s own festive offering, which is none other than the entire Season’s Beatings series of festive mixes. These went live at the same time as this mix, so get stuck in yo!

See you in 2009.

Peace
