<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

Our latest guest mix comes from US producer howse, a little known name I was put onto by Jimmy from Streets of Beige when I guested on the YSK radio show on NTS a couple months back. Jimmy played one of howse’s tracks on the show and I remember my first reaction being one of surprise swiftly followed by ‘this sounds like ambient juke!’ – which is a good thing.

The music in question is freely available to download via howse’s Bandcamp as an EP entitled Undizputed. Feeling that this was some seriously dope music and interesting take on current styles within dance music I hit him up and asked if he’d be down to do a guest mix, which he was kind enough to agree to. As it turns out he’s got a new EP forthcoming on the Astro Nautico label, which will drop towards late August. You can hear a preview from the EP on the latest podcast and expect to hear more on the shows in coming months for sure.

For now though howse graces us with an hour long mixtape of sounds he’s feeling for your listening pleasure. The mix features a nice cross section of both laid back and upfront dance music and more including many Rhythm Inc favourites and friends like Sepalcure, Mike Slott, Kode 9, Addison Groove, Ossie, Peverelist, FaltyDL and more.

Little remains to be said beyond thanking the man for his time and encouraging you to further check his music and support it if you like it. As I said he has what I feel is a real unique and interesting take on certain current trends in dance music and that’s not just refreshing but also makes for fascinating listening.

As always you can download and/or stream the mix below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feed to get the shows directly to your inbox/reader/iTunes player.

Enjoy!

As announced earlier, this month’s regular podcasts are all cancelled aside from RIPL which will drop on Monday. Despite having been kept busy by our work on the Nihon Kizuna compilation, we’re starting to get back into normal mode here in Tokyo and I’m finally starting to be able to enjoy the holiday and get stuck into the shows I had booked, which are no longer getting cancelled as the city returns to life after a couple of interesting weeks.

This mix was originally going to be a promo mix for the Mo’ Fun party I’m doing next month. Then it also became a mix to promote the Nihon Kizuna release before the work on that kept us too busy and the success proved that additional promotion probably wasn’t that much needed, especially not when we had so much to do. And so it went back to being a mix to promote Mo’ Fun vol.12 though by then it had become a love letter to Japan, a country I feel spiritually connected to and which I have a tremendous amount of love and respect for.

A lot of the music in this mix reminds me of Japan, with many tracks – old and new – having a direct link to the country and its people. For example the Skeng remix which closes it features samples recorded by The Bug and Kode 9 in Kyoto in 2007 when they were visiting/touring. The Baku megamix of Poison Dart was recorded shortly after that same tour. Cut End was a long standing anthem at BTC before Mala released it on Deep Medi. While Yosi Horikawa’s tracks always transport me to Japan whenever I listen to them. Alongside these tracks there’s a bunch of new stuff I’m feeling and the whole thing is joined together and interspersed by recordings I made on the streets of Tokyo in 2008, namely in Ogikubo, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku and Kiyose.

Mo’ Fun vol.12 is going down on April 9th, at Heavy Sick Zero in Nakano, Tokyo. Full details can be found on the Facebook event page. Many thanks to KK-san for inviting me to play.

If you enjoy this mix then please make a donation to the Japanese Red Cross, or alternatively buy a copy of the Nihon Kizuna compilation – all proceeds from which go to the Japanese Red Cross.

Many thanks to all the artists and labels featuring in this mix. Dedicated to the victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

So with a little delay here comes the February podcast from my good self, aptly retitled to March pt.1 – expect another show end of month as usual. With the shorter amount of days last month and relentless work I’ve had to finish before my upcoming trip (more on that soon) it just wasn’t possible to get the show done in time without rushing it. Add to this the fact that this instalment is a seriously heavy affair and I felt it was only right to take a few more days and give you something worthwhile.

Putting the tracklist together I’ve just realised that out of 41 tracks in this show, 34 are forthcoming – a good reflection of the quality and amount of good music we’ve been privileged to receive in the inbox. And there were another 10 odd tracks I wanted to include. This month’s show is also a reflection of labels we’re feeling this year. Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus’ musical child, is the subject of our mini feature with new music from Mono/Poly, Taylor McFerrin, Matthewdavid and Jerimiah Jae covering the spectrum from blunted beats to smooth, modern jazz. And then we’ve also got the Friends of Friends label (close friends of ours) represented with 3 tracks from upcoming releases by Shlomho, Groundislava and Mexicans with Guns, our other good friends at Project Mooncircle are featured with two recent releases from Robot Koch & John Robinson and Long Arm and then there’s Car Crash Set who’ve sent us new music from Pixelord and John Lemmon (awesome name btw).

Elsewhere we’ve got new music from Uncle Lew & Coco B, Kode 9 & The Spaceape, Julio Bashmore, SCB, Danny Drive Thru, Lorn, Non Projects, Rick Wilhite, Austin Peralta, Subeena, Quantic, Chrissy Murderbot, Om Unit, Nicolas Jaar, Lopez, Siriusmo, Royalty, 1000 Names, Prefuse 73 and more – covering a broad range of music. I somehow feel that this month’s show really lives up to our tagline of discerning music for discerning ears. It changes and moves and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together.

As always be sure to check the artists and labels (all linked below) if you feel the music. Download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes/newsletter to get the goodies directly in your inbox.

I’ll be back late march – live from Tokyo as I’ll be in Japan for six weeks from next week. Expect some udpates on the site in that time, guest mixes from our FoF series, Skyence and more including a mega special secret download dropping in the next two weeks. No more details but it will be worth it trust me. I’ll also be joining the Raid System boys on March 25th for a special party in Tokyo that’ll be broadcast on Ustream. More details soon.

Meanwhile enjoy, bump loud and share.

<itunes:summary>So with a little delay here comes the February podcast from my good self, aptly retitled to March pt.1 - expect another show end of month as usual. With the shorter amount of days last month and relentless work I've had to finish before my upcoming trip (more on that soon) it just wasn't possible to get the show done in time without rushing it. Add to this the fact that this instalment is a seriously heavy affair and I felt it was only right to take a few more days and give you something worthwhile.

Putting the tracklist together I've just realised that out of 41 tracks in this show, 34 are forthcoming - a good reflection of the quality and amount of good music we've been privileged to receive in the inbox. And there were another 10 odd tracks I wanted to include. This month's show is also a reflection of labels we're feeling this year. Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus' musical child, is the subject of our mini feature with new music from Mono/Poly, Taylor McFerrin, Matthewdavid and Jerimiah Jae covering the spectrum from blunted beats to smooth, modern jazz. And then we've also got the Friends of Friends label (close friends of ours) represented with 3 tracks from upcoming releases by Shlomho, Groundislava and Mexicans with Guns, our other good friends at Project Mooncircle are featured with two recent releases from Robot Koch & John Robinson and Long Arm and then there's Car Crash Set who've sent us new music from Pixelord and John Lemmon (awesome name btw).

Elsewhere we've got new music from Uncle Lew & Coco B, Kode 9 & The Spaceape, Julio Bashmore, SCB, Danny Drive Thru, Lorn, Non Projects, Rick Wilhite, Austin Peralta, Subeena, Quantic, Chrissy Murderbot, Om Unit, Nicolas Jaar, Lopez, Siriusmo, Royalty, 1000 Names, Prefuse 73 and more - covering a broad range of music. I somehow feel that this month's show really lives up to our tagline of discerning music for discerning ears. It changes and moves and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together.

As always be sure to check the artists and labels (all linked below) if you feel the music. Download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes/newsletter to get the goodies directly in your inbox.

I'll be back late march - live from Tokyo as I'll be in Japan for six weeks from next week. Expect some udpates on the site in that time, guest mixes from our FoF series, Skyence and more including a mega special secret download dropping in the next two weeks. No more details but it will be worth it trust me. I'll also be joining the Raid System boys on March 25th for a special party in Tokyo that'll be broadcast on Ustream. More details soon.

Meanwhile enjoy, bump loud and share.

Another month, another show and we made it just in time this month despite my best intentions. To be fair I did fracture my wrist two weeks ago which is probably the best excuse I’ve had for a late show (look out for those potholes if you’re cycling around town at night!). Following beautifully from our RIPL and RIRS shows earlier in the month I’m very happy to bring another 2 hours of fresh new music and classics selected especially for you, and with the summer on our doorstep round here this month’s selection is on the slightly sunny side.

There was a lot of music to go through for the show this month, so much I had to leave about 10 odd tracks out. We have new and forthcoming bits from the likes of Mochilla and Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Kode 9, Ramp Recordings, Swede:art, DJ Nate, Mount Kimbie, Terror Danjah, Afta1, Goth Trad, Ichiro_, Africa Hitech, Andrea Triana, Skyence and many more. Alongside all this new music this month’s mini feature takes a look at the legendary Berghain nightclub, one of Berlin’s most well known clubbing institution. It’s not often we cover techno or techno related music on this show but this month I really felt some light needed to be shone on the latest Berghain mix CD which is out now mixed by Ben Klock. Along with it came three singles, a track from each of which we’ve put in our mini feature. This is an ideal way to become acquainted with what’s been happening lately on the techno side of things especially if like me you like some techno stuff you’ve heard but aren’t an avid fan. Those who know may not hear anything new but I’d be willing to bet that most of our listeners are probably not too up on their techno. Hopefully this mini feature helps to show a good selection of what’s out there with a killer track from Martyn which has been a firm favourite of mine for the last month.

As always the show is available to download and stream below and directly via our newsletter, RSS and iTunes feeds (links in the righthand column). Full tracklist below with links to all the websites and where you can buy the music.

That’s it for June, stay tuned for our regular shows in July alongside some tasty guest mixes which we’ll be announcing very soon. Oh and a long overdue site revamp!

It’s with great pleasure that we kick off a new monthly series of guest mixes in conjuction with the Friends of Friends label. FoF should be no stranger to regular listeners, as we’ve been strong supporters of the label ever since it started in late 08/early 09. We’ve worked with them in supporting the releases and spreading the word, and even hooked them up with Om Unit for a forthcoming release, so when Lazy Brow who runs the label got in touch recently about starting a series of guest mixes and asked me to do the first one it was a no-brainer. Not to mention a real honor and pleasure.

Once the mix was wrapped we got chatting about how best to get it out there to as many heads as possible and so the next logical step was to do a Rhythm Inc/FoF team up. So starting this week, once a month we’ll be dropping an exclusive mix as part of the Friends of Friends mix series – each mix will be brought to you by a friend of the label. The next one in the series is already done, but we won’t give out who it is just yet. Expect to be hearing sounds from worldwide producers who are doing things we love. It’s a friend and family thing really.

Each mix will be podcast on Rhythm Inc and also available via FoF’s Soundcloud page and website.

The artwork for this one comes from a friend of FoF, of course. Photographer Oliver Kish snapped this truly incredible picture and had this story to tell regarding how it came about. It is not staged! (click it for a bigger version)

“This photo was taken during my first tip to the blooming poppy fields in Southern California. Thinking the day was over, I turned a corner and there he was, the tinman. I took a quick snap on my original Russian made LC-A, then headed home. I’ve been to the poppy fields since and have never run into the tinman again. Right place, right time, channeling the Wizard…”

As for the mix when I was asked to do this the idea of a theme for it came pretty quickly – showcase music from friends and family worldwide. People I know and have worked with over the years in various music scenes. In my 8 or so years as a music journalist and in various other roles relating to music I’ve had the pleasure to meet and work with some amazing artists, many of whom I feel lucky and honored to call friends, and quite a few who are close personal friends of mine and continually inspire me and drive me on. This mix aims to represent that by showcasing as much of the talent I feel close to – it covers scratch music, jungle, dubstep, beats, hip hop, electro and much more. The mix also reflects the truly worldwide spread of exciting music today and my own times spent in various countries, including the UK, France, Italy and Japan.

The mix itself is a pretty intense ride with 27 tracks in 45 minutes but I hope people get as much enjoyment from it as I did putting it together and that it leads to them checking out the artists and supporting them. The mix features a heap of exclusives, unreleased tracks and forthcoming releases. I have worked with every artist and/or label featured in this mix, so this is truly a snapshot of my friends and family.

<itunes:summary>It's with great pleasure that we kick off a new monthly series of guest mixes in conjuction with the Friends of Friends label. FoF should be no stranger to regular listeners, as we've been strong supporters of the label ever since it started in late 08/early 09. We've worked with them in supporting the releases and spreading the word, and even hooked them up with Om Unit for a forthcoming release, so when Lazy Brow who runs the label got in touch recently about starting a series of guest mixes and asked me to do the first one it was a no-brainer. Not to mention a real honor and pleasure.

Once the mix was wrapped we got chatting about how best to get it out there to as many heads as possible and so the next logical step was to do a Rhythm Inc/FoF team up. So starting this week, once a month we'll be dropping an exclusive mix as part of the Friends of Friends mix series - each mix will be brought to you by a friend of the label. The next one in the series is already done, but we won't give out who it is just yet. Expect to be hearing sounds from worldwide producers who are doing things we love. It's a friend and family thing really.

Each mix will be podcast on Rhythm Inc and also available via FoF's Soundcloud page and website.

The artwork for this one comes from a friend of FoF, of course. Photographer Oliver Kish snapped this truly incredible picture and had this story to tell regarding how it came about. It is not staged! (click it for a bigger version)

"This photo was taken during my first tip to the blooming poppy fields in Southern California. Thinking the day was over, I turned a corner and there he was, the tinman. I took a quick snap on my original Russian made LC-A, then headed home. I've been to the poppy fields since and have never run into the tinman again. Right place, right time, channeling the Wizard..."

As for the mix when I was asked to do this the idea of a theme for it came pretty quickly - showcase music from friends and family worldwide. People I know and have worked with over the years in various music scenes. In my 8 or so years as a music journalist and in various other roles relating to music I've had the pleasure to meet and work with some amazing artists, many of whom I feel lucky and honored to call friends, and quite a few who are close personal friends of mine and continually inspire me and drive me on. This mix aims to represent that by showcasing as much of the talent I feel close to - it covers scratch music, jungle, dubstep, beats, hip hop, electro and much more.

So I won't blabber on much longer and let you enjoy the music. As always embeds for stream and direct download links are below. Subscribers to the RSS or iTunes feeds will have the mix on their way to them now.

I'd like to just thank all the artists for the music but also their support over the years. It's been a pleasure working with each and everyone of you in whatever capacity and I hope to continue to do so in years to come. And huge thanks to FoF for asking me to do this. It's truly a pleasure!

Peace

Despite it being nearly one week into November, we’re bringing you the October show which suffered the delaying combo of both my laptop dying and a rather nasty cold hitting me in the same week. The show was actually wrapped 2 weeks ago but we couldn’t get it out till now. Lucky you though, as you’ll be getting another show in a few weeks with our November edition.

I realised as I was putting the tracklist together that for some reason this month features a rather high number of freely available tracks. This is in part a reflection of my own listening habits (and the fact I spend way too much time on the internet) but also I think of the move by artists and labels to make more music available freely as a way to promote paying releases, gigs and other merchandise. Lastly I would also say that the increasing number of free tracks in our playlists this year is a reflection of the increase in quality in free music. Whereas before free tracks where often throwaway material, today an increasing number of artists are releasing bootlegs, remixes and their own tracks for free and keeping a high quality control on it. Again I think this is something that plays into the aforementioned ‘free music as promotion’ vehicle. All the artists with a freely available track in this month’s show also have physical, paying releases and quite a few are actually established artists in their own ‘scenes’.

What about the music though? This month we take in a rather wide range of music, reflecting the diversity of what’s been trickling into our inbox/hands. From the psychedelic meets Afghani traditional music of Ariana Delawari to straight beats (and some incredible flips) from KenLo, fLako, Fulgeance and Dibiase via tribal house vibes from Blue Daisy, 21st century boogie from Dam Funk, hard-hitting hip hop from Kids in Tracksuits and Mr Lif and forward-thinking productions from Om Unit, Mike Slott and Talen. And that’s only part of it, there’s more and it’s all high quality as far as I’m concerned.

This month’s mini-feature is a tie-in with the 5th anniversary of the Hyperdub label. Headed by Kode 9, Hyperdub has long been a favourite at Rhythm Inc, with Trick regularly playing the label’s early releases as both the show and label share roughly the same birthdays. To celebrate their anniversary Hyperdub have curated an incredible compilation, called ’5′, spanning two CDs or 5 12″s and featuring classic material from the label’s archive, unreleased one-offs and 15 or so brand new productions from the label’s artists and friends including names like Flying Lotus, Mala, Martin, Samiyam, Ikonika, Quarta330, and more. It’s fair to say that ’5′ is the final nail in the coffin for lesser labels, if it was even needed, that shows just how influential and forward thinking Hyperdub has been as an independent over the years. From its humble beginnings to its current wide palette of sounds, Hyperdub continues to do what everyone least expects, and that’s just one of many reasons why we love them and their music. For the feature we’ve got four tracks from the compilation taking in The Bug under his King Midas Sound alias, Mala, Kode 9 and Samiyam – music as different as it comes and yet somehow logically intertwined.

So enough with the words, sit back and crank the volume for 2h of the latest and freshest music. And stay tuned for some special shows coming up in the month. For now enjoy!

While it’s been a bit of a quiet month here at Rhythm Inc headquarters (life has a habit of getting in the way like that), the music has kept coming in thick and fast. This month’s show is therefore another slightly extended edition with 70 minutes of fresh new music and exclusives. From the live, funky sounds of El Michels Affair and The Heliocentrics to the dubbed out riddims of Dubterror, T-Woc and Ras G via 21st century gfunk from Joker, Funky stylings from Kode 9 and boom bap headnodders and the new school hip hop flavours of Willie Isz, Paul White, Dorian Concept, Jamie Vex’d, G.O.D and GB.

The mini feature this month looks at the work of West Coast producer Dert, a man who’s produced for KRS One among others and made a name for himself through various beat tapes and mashups releases including the excellent ‘Sometimes I Rhyme Slow’ and his reinterpretation of the Pink Floyd classic ‘Dark Side of The Moon’. For the feature we’ve hand picked 5 beats/tracks from previous releases as well as from his forthcoming CMYK EP, which is out now. Peep the playlist for full details of where to cop everything, and also look for Dert on iTunes where you can buy a few of his albums (can’t seem to find a way to link to the page directly, but it’ll come up if you search for Dert in the iTunes store).

So that’s it for this month, as usual grab the show directly below or subscribe via iTunes or your podcatcher of choice so you never miss a show (and save yourself a few clicks along the way). Subscription details can be found on the right hand side!

And stay tuned for some more guest mixes in May as well as the usual dose of fresh new music. Oh yeah and if you haven’t already be sure to check the Trick and Tom show’s weekly goodness and keep an eye on Turntable Radio for some special video and audio podcasts in coming weeks.

Right then. You might have been wondering when the hell this mix was going to be online, and rightly too considering we announced it a while back. In the end, with life and other fun things getting in the way we decided to hold it back until the festivities were starting, kind of like a virtual serving of extra stuffing. And being that it’s the season of over indulging and excess, this month’s show is a best of 08 mix special: no talking, just 70 mins of some of the best and our favouritest music of the year. Whether you’re enjoying the festivities with the family, alone or with friends, away or at home, at work or on holiday (I did work last on xmas day so I know it’s not an impossibility, big up those who are!) we hope you enjoy our last show of the year.

Not only does this show include some of our favourite singles and album tracks from 2008, it also comes with a xmas-sized mini feature looking at the ouput of the Hyperdub label, which gets label of the year by a long mile, regardless of genre.

2008 has definitely been an interesting year musically to say the least. Trick remarked earlier on in the month that album wise it hasn’t been an exceptional year, which I’d have to agree with to an extent. A few albums do stand out, like say The Bug’s ‘London Zoo,’ and between putting this mix together and doing the obligatory end of year list thing over on my blog I’ve come to the realisation that this year it’s much more singles, EPs and certain album tracks that stand out for me. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing either.

This end of year special podcast reflects all of this with tracks from some of the year’s stand out albums, singles, EPs, and even a couple of unreleased numbers that have created quite a lot of interest on and offline. This show is also definitely a bit of a who’s who of the artists and the labels that have populated our tracklists on the regular since Rhythm Incursions moved to its podcast-only format back in June, with the likes of Nosaj Thing, Flying Lotus, Kode 9, Maga Bo, The Bug, J Dilla and more.

Another thing reflected in the mix is the return of the producer to the front in certain corners of the hip hop world (see explosion of interest around Flying Lotus for proof of that) and how this return has been distinctively led by a more awkward and experimental approach to instrumental tracks, also echoed in the work of certain producers affiliated with the dubstep, grime and other electronic scenes. While far from encompassing everything that happened this year, these two musical ‘tendencies’ have definitely had a big impact on fans, producers and DJs alike.

So that’s about it. We’re officially done for 08. Massive thanks to you the listeners for your continued support and a big big shout to the entire Rhythm Incursions clique: Mr Trick, Waxfactor, Carlo, Joey Beats, Dday One and the extended fam. Also a big thank you to all the artists and labels who have supported the show this year through their music and guest appearances.

Look out for more of the same in 2009, as we roll out some very tasty guest mixes and new shows from all the regulars in January (who knows Waxfactor might even come out of his hiding lair). If you’re new to the show then be sure to check our archives and the feed where you can find all the previous shows available for download (and there’s been some corkers this year).

And finally if you’re still feeling somewhat hungry or are looking for something else to get stuck into, then check out Turntable Radio’s own festive offering, which is none other than the entire Season’s Beatings series of festive mixes. These went live at the same time as this mix, so get stuck in yo!

See you in 2009.

Peace
