We round off the summer with our regular podcast, the perfect end to a busy two months that have seen guest mixes from DJ Pain, Vangel, Katzuma, My Dry Wet Mess, Sven Swift, Mr Beatnick, B-Ju and a live set from Draco alongside the regular shows from Primus Luta in the US, Raid System in Tokyo and our goodselves in London. If you missed any of those the show archives are the best place to start.

This month’s show features plenty of forthcoming releases for the autumn as well as some of highlights from the year so far including FaltyDL, Actress, Blundetto, Mount Kimbie, Lorn, Teebs, Blue Daisy, Hint, Skream, Om Unit, Hyperdub, King Midas Sound, Shigeto, Sideshow, Kelpe and many more.

No mini feature as such this month but instead we’ve got two tracks from the latest releases on the A Future Without label, who gave us an exclusive download from Baba Yaga last week in case you missed it, and Exile’s Radio remix project including one from the free album and one from the official AM/FM remix album.

Not much else to say apart from enjoy! As usual the show can be download and streamed below – or just subscribe via RSS or iTunes to receive the shows directly to your inbox/desktop/reader.

Thanks as always to the artists and labels – if you like what you hear be sure to click the links and support the music.

Stay tuned for more guest mixes in September, from Russia and Japan among other places. The long overdue site redesign should also happen sometime next month.

Rhythm Incursions / Primus Luta aka RIPL – August ’10

Stepping up first as always this month is Primus Luta with RIPL. Slight change this month as he takes the occasion to look over the first half of the year and highlight favourites and must buys. I’ll leave the explaining to him but one eye over the tracklist and you’ll see Rhythm Inc favourites everywhere including All City records, Alpha Pup, Flying Lotus and Brainfeeder, Ghostly and more.

So this month as the summer nears end I decided to do an early reflection on the year and highlight some of the standout work I’ve heard throughout the year. So we’ll call this the RIPL Mid-Year Report with the very special RIPL Mid-Year Awards. Overall the selection gives a good picture of just how much ground is being covered by producers in 2010. With categories ranging from the “Wobble the Bass” award, the “Ultimate Break Beat” and the “Dr. Dre’s Detox” award, well lets just say it’ll put a smile on your face.

All of this in prep to actually do some sort of award thing for the end of the year. If not for the dope music and occasional vibes, check this out to see where my head is about ‘awarding’ the beat scene and fall through with some comments to let me know if there’s awards I got wrong, ones you really like, or ones you think I missed.

So that’s it. As the man said comments are much welcomed, let us know what you think!

As always show is available to direct download and stream below alongside full tracklist. Or just sign up to the RSS/iTunes feeds and never miss a show. Stay tuned for a guest mix from B-Ju next monday, RIRS August next friday and a very special guest mix from My Dry Wet Mess, the latest signing to Daedelus’ label, the following monday. It’s gonna be a good end of summer trust us.

Rhythm Incursions / Raid System aka RIRS – May ’10

We start the last week of what has been a very busy month here on Rhythm Inc with the first show from our second new team of presenters all the way live (well sort of) from Tokyo, Japan. Following the debut of Primus Luta last week with his new regular RIPL show (peep it here if you missed it) we’re very happy to welcome XLII and Broken Haze to the Rhythm Inc family for a new monthly podcast under the banner of their Raid System label and collective. Seeing as how I’m feeling highly inspired for names, we decided to take Primus’ idea of RIPL and make this new show RIRS. Bit more of a mouth full that’s for sure but hey. If you have a better idea answers on the back of a postcard in the comments below please.

Regular listeners will remember Raid System from a series of guest mixes we aired earlier this year featuring Broken Haze, XLII and Ken One. Following this we got talking with XLII and much like happened with Primus Luta it felt like a very logical thing to invite the guys on board for a regular show. So every month the dynamic duo of XLII and Broken Haze will be bringing you some fresh new music, exclusives and more from their label, friends and artists worldwide alongside some light hearted banter and presentation styles in English and Japanese. Considering that Japan is now our third biggest country for visits it’s only right for us to rep a show for the Japanese massive. 日本人のみんなさんよろしくおねがいします!

As with Primus’ first show, this is a test run of sort while we iron out all the kinks before officially launching our new schedule in June and over the summer. So please do let us know of any feedback in the comments section.

XLII and Broken Haze have put together a selection of new and forthcoming releases for you this month. Each show will feature segments presented by each of them, going back to back. This first show features a selection of new music from many of our favourites like Starkey, Paul White, Planet Mu and Lorn alongside many new artists who we haven’t featured in the past.

So without further ado please welcome our latest presenters to the Rhythm Incursions family – XLII and Broken Haze. As usual direct download link and stream are below. If you don’t want to miss a show please subscribe via our RSS or iTunes feeds (links in the sidebar).

Friends of Friends mix series: Kper – My Friends, My Family

May 21, 2010 by Laurent

It’s with great pleasure that we kick off a new monthly series of guest mixes in conjuction with the Friends of Friends label. FoF should be no stranger to regular listeners, as we’ve been strong supporters of the label ever since it started in late 08/early 09. We’ve worked with them in supporting the releases and spreading the word, and even hooked them up with Om Unit for a forthcoming release, so when Lazy Brow who runs the label got in touch recently about starting a series of guest mixes and asked me to do the first one it was a no-brainer. Not to mention a real honor and pleasure.

Once the mix was wrapped we got chatting about how best to get it out there to as many heads as possible and so the next logical step was to do a Rhythm Inc/FoF team up. So starting this week, once a month we’ll be dropping an exclusive mix as part of the Friends of Friends mix series – each mix will be brought to you by a friend of the label. The next one in the series is already done, but we won’t give out who it is just yet. Expect to be hearing sounds from worldwide producers who are doing things we love. It’s a friend and family thing really.

Each mix will be podcast on Rhythm Inc and also available via FoF’s Soundcloud page and website.

The artwork for this one comes from a friend of FoF, of course. Photographer Oliver Kish snapped this truly incredible picture and had this story to tell regarding how it came about. It is not staged! (click it for a bigger version)

“This photo was taken during my first tip to the blooming poppy fields in Southern California. Thinking the day was over, I turned a corner and there he was, the tinman. I took a quick snap on my original Russian made LC-A, then headed home. I’ve been to the poppy fields since and have never run into the tinman again. Right place, right time, channeling the Wizard…”

As for the mix when I was asked to do this the idea of a theme for it came pretty quickly – showcase music from friends and family worldwide. People I know and have worked with over the years in various music scenes. In my 8 or so years as a music journalist and in various other roles relating to music I’ve had the pleasure to meet and work with some amazing artists, many of whom I feel lucky and honored to call friends, and quite a few who are close personal friends of mine and continually inspire me and drive me on. This mix aims to represent that by showcasing as much of the talent I feel close to – it covers scratch music, jungle, dubstep, beats, hip hop, electro and much more. The mix also reflects the truly worldwide spread of exciting music today and my own times spent in various countries, including the UK, France, Italy and Japan.

The mix itself is a pretty intense ride with 27 tracks in 45 minutes but I hope people get as much enjoyment from it as I did putting it together and that it leads to them checking out the artists and supporting them. The mix features a heap of exclusives, unreleased tracks and forthcoming releases. I have worked with every artist and/or label featured in this mix, so this is truly a snapshot of my friends and family.

So I won’t blabber on much longer and let you enjoy the music. As always embeds for stream and direct download links are below. Subscribers to the RSS or iTunes feeds will have the mix on their way to them now.

I’d like to just thank all the artists for the music but also their support over the years. It’s been a pleasure working with each and everyone of you in whatever capacity and I hope to continue to do so in years to come. And huge thanks to FoF for asking me to do this. It’s truly a pleasure!

Peace

Laurent aka Kper

Rhythm Incursions / Primus Luta aka RIPL – May ’10

May 16, 2010 by Laurent

I’m very happy to introduce our first (of two) brand new regular presenters to the Rhythm Incursions airwaves. Primus Luta from AvantUrb joins us for a new monthly show direct from the East coast of the United states. Alongside DDay One’s semi-regular show from L.A we’ve now got two presenters repping both sides of the country.

Regular listeners will remember the name as he’s guested on the show quite a few times in the last year, first with the retrospective Beat Construction mix in April, and then with 3 parts of his four-part The Vanguard series earlier this year. An avid music fan and musician, he holds the same interest in new music as we do and brings to the show the same open minded and embracing attitude that we try and put into ours. After chatting by email, following his work and putting his mixes on the show for the best part of a year, it felt like a natural progression to bring him on board.

Here’s some words from the man himself regarding the new show, which has been dubbed RIPL:

For the first episode of RIPL the aim was to give a broad idea of the type of stuff you can expect to hear over the coming months. This is an incredible period in music, with folk from the four corners really representing at the leading edge, where sounds and styles are being born every minute. We like to umbrella these into singular genres for simplicity, but the truth of the matter is that genre’s themselves have become modular.

Each genre, each sub-genre, is like a pebble dropping into the ocean of sound sending out ripples in concentric circles. They bounce off of each other, absorb one another’s energy, intersect, and create new ripples, new sounds, new genres, new sub genres. This show is all about the ripples. Okay I just made that up. It sounded good though, nowhere near as good as the music itself. Bring on the RIPL!!

Primus Luta will be holding it down on the second week of each month starting next month with his RIPL show. He will be followed by our other new presenters XLII and Broken Haze from Raid System in Tokyo – who regular listeners will remember we featured recently in a 3-part special – who will hold down the third week of the month starting in June (their debut show goes out next week). And then on the last week of the month our regular show will continue to go out. So that’ll be 3 times the amount of regular music coming your way each month, each from a different continent but with the same aim of bringing discerning music to discerning ears.

Please leave your feedback on this show so we can continue to build and take in your input as well.

Enjoy!

Rhythm Incursions – April ’10

April 22, 2010 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent

After nearly a week of blue, planeless skies here in London I guess we can confidently say that spring has arrived – and hopefully summer isn’t too far behind. So as we do every month let us celebrate with some music and another 2 hours of new, upcoming, old and unreleased bits for discerning ears.

On the show this month we’ve got new and forthcoming music from B-Ju, Ras G, Robot Koch Lando Kal, Lorn, Jahcoozi, FaltyDL, Om Unit, Letherette, Uncle Lew, Alex B, Take, Deru, LV and Quarta330, Shigeto, Skitz, Tokimonsta, Space Invadas, Yosi Horikawa, Dimlite and more alongside some favourites of recent times from RSD, James Blake, Uyama Hiroto, Mount Kimbie, Daisuke Tanabe and Flying Lotus among others.

This month’s mini feature meanwhile looks at the work of Japanese producer O.N.O. Probably best know as the producer for Tha Blue Herb, one of Japan’s most famous rap crews, and hailing from the northern island of Hokkaido, O.N.O has also been releasing under his name as a solo artist for well over ten years now. And it’s his work as a solo artist that’s always fascinated me since I discovered him thanks to Waxfactor about five years ago. This mini feature aims to shine a little light on the man’s incredible production range which runs from hip hop to dub, jungle to house, ambient to abstract and at times crazy electronic music. The constant in a lot of his music is his use of machines to create the sounds, something which really takes meaning when you see his live shows (youtube here and here) where equipped with 2 MPCs, a sequencer and effects units he puts on one of the most fascinating and enjoyable live electronic music shows I’ve ever seen. On the mini feature we’ve got 4 tracks from releases spanning most of his solo career and which as I said gives a nice idea of his diverse output. For more on the man check his website and those of you in/around Tokyo can catch him playing with Flying Lotus for a Tokyo Brainfeeder session soon – hopefully this might help shine some more light on his work outside Japan.

For now though sit back and enjoy another two hours of discerning music for discerning ears. As always you can grab the show directly at the link below, stream at the bottom of this post, or subscribe to our iTunes and/or RSS feed and you won’t even have to click through and read through all this every time we drop a new show. Look out for more guest mixes coming up next and some news regarding the shows. Until then enjoy!

Jammer – Better Than (Lorn remix)

March 12, 2010 by Laurent

Anyone who listens to the shows regularly or has been following us for a while now should know Lorn. Our story with the Milwaukee native goes waaaaaay back to the scratch internet boards days when he was making some of the most amazing, mind-bending loops for people to cut over. A few years ago he started reappearing on the radar with his own productions, and in 2009 his first proper debut album was snapped up by Brainfeeder for release (if you don’t count the extensive amount of music he’s put out for free before that, or the break record he released).

All of which only added to the surprise I got a few weeks back when Big Dada hit me up to say that Lorn had remixed the new Jammer single that the label will be releasing next week. Yes that’s right – Lorn from Milwaukee remixing Jammer, the grime legend from London. It doesn’t get better than this, literally.

‘Better Than’ is out March 15 on Big Dada, with original, instrumental and aforementioned Lorn remix which you can download/stream below courtesy of the lovely Dada people. Described as a dubstep remix elsewhere, I can see why people would say that, though personally Lorn’s take doesn’t particularly make me think of any specific genre, it’s just an incredibly heavy, crushing flip of the original, taking Jammer’s vocals into the territories Lorn is most comfortable in – dark, vicious territories with towering drums and bass lines.

If you want more from the man be sure to check his myspace, as well as the mini feature we did on him last year. And stay tuned for more previews of his album, ‘Nothing Else’ which will drop on Brainfeeder in June 2010. For now though enjoy this beauty of a remix.
