<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

And so we reach the end of the year and the obligatory retrospective edition. This year we’ve opted for a slightly different format, bringing together our three regular shows – RIPL, RIRS and Rhythm Incursions – into one bumper 3h edition that looks back at our favourite music from 2011. With each of us selecting one hour of music, this end of year show features primarily music and tracks which we’ve previously aired as well as a few additions culled from releases and/or artists we’ve supported this year.

We start with the Rhythm Incursions mix presented by Laurent which features a mini feature on the label of the year which is Keysound Recordings, the London label headed by Blackdown. Despite having had a fairly quiet year in comparison to other labels, Keysound’s put out three outstanding albums from Damu, LV & Joshua Idehen and Sully, as well as a handful of 12″s that have all been featured on previous shows and been staples of many sets. As the adage goes quality not quantity and while it’s true that this has actually been a busy year for the label we feel that they really deserve the accolade. Alongside Keysound, the mix features regulars from the past year as well as our favourite releases including Om Unit, Shabazz Palaces, Slugabed, EAN, Kode 9, Yosi Horikawa (with his track from the Nihon Kizuna compilation), NastyNasty, Mark Pritchard under both his solo and Africa Hitech aliases, Machinedrum, Sepalcure and 1000Names.

Primus Luta meanwhile also showcases his favourites – many recognisable from his own 2011 shows – in his mix. A straight up one hour mix with no talking it features some of this year’s best releases from both the electronic and rap world with the likes of 2562, Busdriver, Kendrick Lamar, Blk.Adonis, Welder, Shigeto, Lorn, Siriusmo, Madlib and Dibiase, DRC Music alongside Om Unit, Sepalcure and Sully who all make additional appearances.

And as for Raid System they opted to do another top 20 countdown of their favourite tracks of the year, though this time it isn’t live. Their mix starts with a short run down of our Nihon Kizuna release as well as Broken Haze’s joint EP with B.Bravo before getting into their top 20 for the year featuring many of the artists and labels they’ve been supporting including Joker, Nino, Rustie, Hudson Mohawke, Funkystepz, Zdot, Bobby Tank, Toddska, Starkey, Daniel Haaksman, Knight Riderz, S-Type, Munchi and more.

So there you have it, 2011 the year that was. As always a big thank you to all our listeners and fans, all the labels and artists and a special thanks to everyone who has kindly donated via the Nihon Kizuna compilation we put together while in Japan in March this year. We’ll see you in 2012 with the first show of the year our new BLN.FM syndication, the first of which is curated by Raid System. It will air live on the first tuesday of each month before being podcasted both here and on the BLN.FM site. Before that though there’s one more guest mix, part of our Friends of Friends mix series dropping on New Year’s Eve – it’s a surprise one so be sure not to miss.

You can download and/or stream the show below or simply subscribe to our RSS/iTunes feeds to get every show automatically to your computer.

Enjoy and happy new year!

If you’re looking for the antidote to Christmas cheer overload then look no further. The homie Lorn has teamed up with Dolor to release a beat tape called Drugs, and it’s available for free.

Soaked in beautiful warmth, Drugs is dark and disturbing featuring not only dope beats but some great cuts and the sort of atmosphere/mood not heard since the glory days of the classic mixtapes from the likes of Dibbs or 1200 Hobos.

There isn’t much else to say other than you need this in your life right about now. Give Christmas the finger and bump some drugs. Do them, abuse them.

Download Drugs from Wednesday Sound here

And of course look out for more from Lorn in the new year.

Now this guest mix has been a long time coming. Seriously. Something like 4 years. It goes back to the late 00s, when I was living in Tokyo and Trick and Waxfactor were still presenting the Rhythm Inc shows on Resonance FM in London. Lone Wolf is someone we’ve known for years, originally via our work on Turntable Radio as he was part of the scratch duo NozL. Then around 06/07 he started sending me a bunch of tracks on a dubstep tip, and at the same time launched his label – Bloodied Blade – alongside his NozL partner. The first couple releases on the label were firm favourites of Trick back then who featured them on the show, and the unreleased stuff Lone Wolf was sending me has been in my DJ ‘bag’ since then – incredibly dark yet fascinating productions, the kind of stuff that takes dancefloors by surprise but leaves people dancing.

And so after all this time we’ve got a Lone Wolf guest mix, celebrating not just how dope – and underrated – a producer he is but also the release of all these tracks he made around 07. Titled ‘Lone Wolf – The Archive’ it’s available for free on Black Hoe Recordings, right here. As I said it’s a real treasure trove of dark, dubstep gems.

The mix itself is a perfect example of Lone Wolf’s productions and styles too featuring a heap of his own stuff alongside favourites from Lorn, Ekaros, Slaughter Mob, Scorn, Sully and Reso. It’s easily the best dubstep orientated mix we’ve hosted so far and I’m really happy to share this with all of you.

As always you can download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes feed to get the shows directly in your inbox.

So with a little delay here comes the February podcast from my good self, aptly retitled to March pt.1 – expect another show end of month as usual. With the shorter amount of days last month and relentless work I’ve had to finish before my upcoming trip (more on that soon) it just wasn’t possible to get the show done in time without rushing it. Add to this the fact that this instalment is a seriously heavy affair and I felt it was only right to take a few more days and give you something worthwhile.

Putting the tracklist together I’ve just realised that out of 41 tracks in this show, 34 are forthcoming – a good reflection of the quality and amount of good music we’ve been privileged to receive in the inbox. And there were another 10 odd tracks I wanted to include. This month’s show is also a reflection of labels we’re feeling this year. Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus’ musical child, is the subject of our mini feature with new music from Mono/Poly, Taylor McFerrin, Matthewdavid and Jerimiah Jae covering the spectrum from blunted beats to smooth, modern jazz. And then we’ve also got the Friends of Friends label (close friends of ours) represented with 3 tracks from upcoming releases by Shlomho, Groundislava and Mexicans with Guns, our other good friends at Project Mooncircle are featured with two recent releases from Robot Koch & John Robinson and Long Arm and then there’s Car Crash Set who’ve sent us new music from Pixelord and John Lemmon (awesome name btw).

Elsewhere we’ve got new music from Uncle Lew & Coco B, Kode 9 & The Spaceape, Julio Bashmore, SCB, Danny Drive Thru, Lorn, Non Projects, Rick Wilhite, Austin Peralta, Subeena, Quantic, Chrissy Murderbot, Om Unit, Nicolas Jaar, Lopez, Siriusmo, Royalty, 1000 Names, Prefuse 73 and more – covering a broad range of music. I somehow feel that this month’s show really lives up to our tagline of discerning music for discerning ears. It changes and moves and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together.

As always be sure to check the artists and labels (all linked below) if you feel the music. Download and/or stream below or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes/newsletter to get the goodies directly in your inbox.

I’ll be back late march – live from Tokyo as I’ll be in Japan for six weeks from next week. Expect some udpates on the site in that time, guest mixes from our FoF series, Skyence and more including a mega special secret download dropping in the next two weeks. No more details but it will be worth it trust me. I’ll also be joining the Raid System boys on March 25th for a special party in Tokyo that’ll be broadcast on Ustream. More details soon.

Meanwhile enjoy, bump loud and share.

Our first Friends of Friends mix for 2011 comes courtesy of DJ Centipede of Mophono, which is perfect really considering how much we’ve been feeling his forthcoming album ‘Cut Crush Form’. What’s even more fitting is that this is a man who’s been involved in some of the West Coast’s most influential and forward thinking parties as a DJ from Future Primitive – whose turn of the century parties help push forward the aesthetic that cemented much of the alternative hip hop and beats in the 00s – to Brainfeeder.

As always with the series, the FoF label hit him up and he delivered a mix inspired by the theme of the series, though not voluntarily as he explains:

Growing up being inspired by drum machines and Djing experimental electronic music since the early 90′s, I knew there would be a healthy dose. One of the goals in this mix was to refine the electronic influence and increase the potency with a few specific artists like Eprom, Lorn and the predecessor Cabbage Boy, Juxtaposed with live elements from artists like Nostalgia 77, Antibalas and DJ Vadim.

60′s and 70′s Electronic music definitely had an influence on me while creating this mix. Throughout history one of the most common attributes in electronic music has been (and I hope it stays this way) experimentation. While I still consider most rap music to be electronic music, I unfortunately did not focus on the MC element in this mix.

When Friends of Friends asked me to do the mix, I saw it as an opportunity to make a fairly experimental mix similar to the vein of the label but with a Mophono twist to it. The moment I most enjoyed about creating this mix, would have to be all the moog rhythms beat matched with the live elements panned hard. I think it is an interesting and unique approach that is entertaining but difficult to pull off in the live arena. While hopefully the listener catches some of the cool mixes and tricks, the goal still remains to create an enjoyable listen…

Its funny, I am so blessed to be surrounded by so many talented musicians that at the end of the mix I realized I know 90% of the people who’s music I used and whats so appropriate is the people I don’t know well, they are Friends of Friends.

So as you can see Mophono’s addition to the FoF series fits perfectly with our own musical ethos here at Rhythm Inc, from the music chosen to the inspirations and approach. It’s shorter than our usual mixes at just over 30 minutes but as they say it’s not always about the length!

As mentioned Mophono’s debut, ‘Cut Crush Form’, is set to drop in February on his own CB records featuring Flying Lotus and MC Subverse. The album is a heady mix of influences, similar to those the man cites for the mix, with heavy, crunchy drums, psychedelic freak outs and beautiful arrangements. Best enjoyed as a complete listen from start to finish it has some particularly inspired moments, such as the track ‘Rep’ feat Subverse – which we aired on the November show. Look out for another preview from the album in this month’s show and get ready for next month’s release.

In the meantime enjoy this half hour trip from the man himself. Big thanks to Leeor as always!

And so the end of year arrives and with it our last show of 2010. The last of our end of year shows, this one follows the 2009 best of mix I did last year though instead of spreading across two shows I tried to squeeze all I could into one session. Make no mistake, despite the naysayers and the doom and gloom surrounding the music industry in general, for me 2010 has been a rather good year music wise. On one side there’s seemingly more music than ever, and with that comes a certain lack of quality control. On the other, this lack of quality control and breakdown of the traditional models within the industry has I believe given various labels and artists in the ‘underground’ a lot more potential for flourishing. As the old saying goes, you’ve just got to look closer to find the gold among all the noise.

I originally had 160 odd tracks earmarked for this show. A couple of days of ruminating and trying things out and I managed to keep it down to 60 or so, as well as the mini feature on All City Records, my label of the year (as you should know by now – they did two guest mixes for us earlier this month). In the process of putting the mix together it first occurred to me that if you consider the amount of music I received this year for the show (at a guess I’d say 500 odd releases, maybe even more) then there really is a big job of sifting through everything to find the stuff that’s actually worthy of a best of mix. Even then I had to leave stuff out that I wished could have been fitted. The criteria (if you will) was a mix of what I’d played on the show in the last 12 months and which I considered to be well above par, as well as tracks that have been staples in my DJ sets and tracks from albums that have barely left my portable player all year. The result is the following tracklist. Apologies to those I missed, but if anything it’s the perfect excuse for you to go over all the shows we’ve put out in the last year (hint hint). I also tried to avoid too much duplication with the previous two end of year shows from Primus Luta and Raid System.

So that’s it for 2010, another year under the belt and onwards. Rhythm Incursions has seen a lot of changes this year – new website, new presenters, new regular guest series. It’s been an absolute blast, and I want to thank everyone who’s made the show what it is and who works out of their own time towards continuing to make this one of the finer podcast series out there. In no specific order much love and thanks to Primus Luta, XLII, Broken Haze, Dday One and Leeor at FoF for their work. A big thank you as well to all the labels, artists and PR who send us stuff and take time to talk to us, sometimes even bowing to our pressures for guest spots. Among them (too many to mention) special thanks to Olan at All City, Gordon at Mooncircle, Marcus at Planet Mu & Hyperdub, Flip at Error Broadcast, Melissa at Tailored, the Outpost, Alex Nut and Alex Chase. Lastly big thanks to my close friends and inspirations Om Unit and Vinilificio.

Right then, enough of the chatter. I’ll let you enjoy the mix. It’s roughly 2h15, with the first 2 hours taken by the mix and the last 15 minutes the All City records megamix celebrating some of their releases from 2010. I was intent on doing a proper megamix of all the releases, but just couldn’t due to time and other engagements. Still this should give you the last push to check their stuff if you haven’t yet. No talking, all mixing and music!

As always stream and/or download below, or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes/email. The playlist is so long I can’t find the energy of linking all the labels/websites this time so PLEASE if you like what you hear than check the playlist and go out there and support the artists and the music. You can browse all available shows by artists on this page, and all previous shows have full, linked tracklists.

Love and blessings, see you in 2011!

We roll into the last two shows of the year as the cold continues to descent here on London. First up is the Raid System family from Tokyo with their end of year show which was recorded live this past saturday during their monthly Ustream session which takes place at Asa’s JarBeat record shop in Tokyo’s Kichijyoji. The guys decided to forego the usual pre-recorded show for a live countdown of their 20 tracks of 2010. Apparently Broken Haze got rather drunk in the process, courtesy of Asa serving him tequila shots to rather interesting results. I’ll let you discover those for yourself.

Remember that you can browse, listen to and download all previous shows by the guys from our RIRS archive – which goes back to the show’s debut in April this year.

As for the tracklist we won’t be posting it for another week, to leave a small element of surprise to the show’s countdown. We’ll post the tracklist as of next week though!

For now I’ll let you enjoy Raid System’s top 20 tracks of 2010, recorded live at JarBeat records. For more on the boys don’t forget to check their site, and as always you can stream and/or download below or simply subscribe to the RSS/iTunes/email and never a miss a show!

Last show of the year will be my own best of 2010 round up which will drop early next week on the 28th if all goes to plan. Enjoy!
