For the 13th instalment of our Friends of Friends mix series we had a bit of a synchronous moment when both Leeor (who runs FoF) and myself suggested a retrospective mix of the label’s expanding catalogue. And seeing as how I’d opened the series back in March last year, Leeor asked if I’d be up for doing the retrospective, an offer I couldn’t really refuse (and no horse heads were involved either).

Going through the label’s catalogue and putting this together was a lot of fun. It also made me think a lot about this idea of friends which the label is based on. This year has taught me a lot about bonds of friendship and their importance. From my time in Japan during the March 11th earthquake to various other musical projects like Original Cultures and the Finest Ego compilation, 2011 has been the year of friendship for me in many ways. So when Leeor and I discussed the next episode of the Friends of Friends mix series, it felt almost normal that we would both suggest a retrospective look at the expanding FoF catalogue – after all we became friends because of the label. ’What Friends Are For’ celebrates the label, its musicians and their friends. I hope you enjoy it just as much as I did putting it together. It’s such a pleasure to work with these guys and I know that the day we finally meet will be a good one. Enjoy!

Our man on the US East Coast returns with his mid-year report and awards for the July show, looking back at the first six months of the year to showcase the cream of the crop of sounds that have impressed him most.

So with a little delay here comes the February podcast from my good self, aptly retitled to March pt.1 – expect another show end of month as usual. With the shorter amount of days last month and relentless work I’ve had to finish before my upcoming trip (more on that soon) it just wasn’t possible to get the show done in time without rushing it. Add to this the fact that this instalment is a seriously heavy affair and I felt it was only right to take a few more days and give you something worthwhile.

Putting the tracklist together I’ve just realised that out of 41 tracks in this show, 34 are forthcoming – a good reflection of the quality and amount of good music we’ve been privileged to receive in the inbox. And there were another 10 odd tracks I wanted to include. This month’s show is also a reflection of labels we’re feeling this year. Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus’ musical child, is the subject of our mini feature with new music from Mono/Poly, Taylor McFerrin, Matthewdavid and Jerimiah Jae covering the spectrum from blunted beats to smooth, modern jazz. And then we’ve also got the Friends of Friends label (close friends of ours) represented with 3 tracks from upcoming releases by Shlomho, Groundislava and Mexicans with Guns, our other good friends at Project Mooncircle are featured with two recent releases from Robot Koch & John Robinson and Long Arm and then there’s Car Crash Set who’ve sent us new music from Pixelord and John Lemmon (awesome name btw).

We roll into the month of December with the prerequisite end of year best of’s and playlists. Up first is Primus Luta with his RIPL show. He runs down his favourite joints of 2010, well the ones he managed to fit in, using his award system – which he premiered back in the summer with the mid-year awards.

In there you’ll find a veritable who’s who of labels and artists we’ve supported this year and since we started. Labels like Planet Mu (who got label of the year from me in November), Hyperdub, Warp, Brainfeeder, R&S, Project Mooncircle all feature alongside Alpha Pup which Primus decided to make his label of the year. The mini feature looks at the Alpha Pup’s output as well as that of the labels it distributes like Elm & Oak, Brainfeeder and Friends of Friends.

Here’s some words from the man himself on the show:

Awwe man this was probably my hardest show to compile, because there was just way too much good music this year. I feel bad for all of the amazing stuff that I left off. Even more, the whole time I’m compiling goodness just keeps dropping. Makes for an exciting 2011, but first of course a little recap of the incredible 2010. Back in August we did the RIPL Mid-Year Report, and so for this episode we’ve got the 2010 RIPL Awards. Tried to cover a good spectrum of things with this and give the respect where it was due, but again there was just way too much music to possibly represent it all in just one show. See you in 2011, promises to be killer.

We won’t bore you with more words and instead just let you get stuck in with what is definitely a great opening show for our end of year recap. It’s going to make my end of year show certainly more difficult to compile!

Our second to last mix of the month comes at you via our Friends of Friends mix series with an artist that is signed to the label and who has made a big impression on us this year. It’s a pleasure to be able to have Ernest Gonzales on the show again – not only was the man responsible for one of our favourite albums of 2010, his debut for the Friends of Friends label ‘Been Meaning To Tell You‘, he also contributed to our guest mixes with the also excellent ‘Been Meaning To Mix This’ back in January ahead of the album’s release.

Ernest’s music on the album really struck a chord with me, both musically but also emotionally. It’s a beautiful coloured ride through electronic, 8bit and folk that really stands out thanks to the impact of the compositions and the addictiveness of the melodies. The album also came in a beautiful packaging that includes drawings for each of the songs by a different artist as well as 16 remixes from the likes of Take, Yppah and more. You can still buy the package, including CD, digital or vinyl of the album, the remixes in digital and the book of illustrations/drawings from the site. It’s christmas soon after all!

Following this release, Ernest also continued with his Mexicans with Guns project which was the latest release on the FoF label alongside Robot Koch – a split EP of fairly huge proportions which we’ve supported on the show over the last few months. For this instalment of our guest mix series Ernest dropped us a recording of a live set he recently performed at the Exploded Drawing event in Texas. I’ll let him fill you in on that:

This set was recorded live from Baby Blue Studios in Austin Texas as part of a new and emerging monthly event called Exploded Drawing. The goal of Exploded Drawing is to shed light on the electronic music scene in Texas… no DJs! For my live sets I perform using Ableton and a midi controller in an improvisational manner. I select, mix and match various pieces of my songs to create a live remix of my material.

All of which hints at the awesomeness of this live set, a truly momentous ride that features plenty of highlights from the album. So if you haven’t yet bought it, bump this loud and do the only logical thing – go cop it, it’ll make your life better.

We return with our last regular show of the month, as always bringing you 2 hours of musical freshness and this month we waste no time with two mini features and a heap of forthcoming releases and exclusives.

Up this month we have new and forthcoming music from Letherette, Terror Danjah, Svpreme Fiend, Prof Nalepa, Natural Self, 8bitch, Ol, Katzuma, Pale Sketcher, Christopher Willits, Guido, Hudson Mohawke, Exile, Shigeto, DELS, Wrongtom and Roots Manuva, Space Dimension Controller, Lobisomem, Ikonika, Lone, Take, Tokimonsta and more as well as a sneak preview of the new Mexicans With Guns release and a few Planet Mu and Ghostly releases. The first mini feature looks at the recent output of the Soularp label, including releases by producer Erik L and Stray. I was put onto them by Jay Scarlett and I must admit I’ve really been impressed by the overall quality and variety on display. From beats to club bangers via 80s throwbacks, Soularp have been putting out some good stuff and this mini feature helps to shine a little light on that.

Following this our second mini feature looks at the recent Froots remixes release by In Vitro Records, which saw them give the tracks from Jean Jacques Perrey and Cosmic Pocket’s Froots album to an impressive selection of new school hip hop, electronic and skwee producers to flip. The result is a double CD which is just as demented as the original but obviously has a bit more mass appeal. We’ve picked out three remixes from Kelpe, Himuro Yoshiteru and Eero Johannes as a little taster but really you need to check the whole thing as it’s well worth your time.

Primus Luta returns for the latest installment of his RIPL monthly show, and once more it’s a killer selection with 100 mins of fresh new sounds and recent favourites.

‘Friends of Friends Remixed’ features remixes of the original tracks by Daedelus and Jogger from Nosaj Thing, Mexicans with Guns, Grahm Zilla, Michna and Eliot Lipp among others. The remix EP will be released on July 28th. In addition T-shirts made exclusively for the first release are still available on the label’s site. The t-shirts come in a bundle with a copy of the EP and a download card for the remix EP. Check the FoF site for details and to buy.

As for the remix project, visit this link for full details. By submitting your email address you’ll be sent the stems for Jogger’s ‘Nice Tights’ track and then the rest is up to you. See below for additional details:

One winner will be selected by FOF Music and Jogger, the second by you, the fans. Both winners will have there remix posted on the MXP4 FOF Music widget, along with the original and official remixes. Winners will also receive a merch pack with music, t-shirt, stickers and other surprises. The contest will run from June 18 to July 19, 2009. Winners will be announced on or around July 22.
