Anti Pop Consortium release new single for free
Anti Pop Consortium are back, with a new album, a new label and a new single, the last of which they’re giving out for free via Amazon’s MP3 shop. Titled ‘Apparently’ you can grab your free copy by visiting the following link.
I won’t lie I haven’t actually had time to listen to the song, though I’ve checked out a few of the other songs from the album on their myspace and I gotta admit while I’ve never been a massive fan it’s sounding pretty good. Beans has always been a favourite MC of mine though, so checking anything with him in it can’t hurt.
Some PR blurb below from the forthcoming album, and stay tuned for some previews in the June Rhythm Inc show. For the rest peep the Big Dada site and their myspace, I believe they have a few dates in Europe during the summer, and most likely more once the album drops.
The mighty Anti-Pop Consortium return to the fray with a free download track from their forthcoming album, “Fluorescent Black,” due on 29th September, a seventeen track monster opus that is set to be one of the records of the year.
“Apparently” itself is classic APC – crunching robot-funk combined with the three distinct voices and flows of Beans, Priest and M.Sayyid. By turns funny, dense, allusive, clever and just devastatingly fresh, this is a group reminding us of their collective strength. Check it now and get all in a tizzy thinking about the album and to follow…
Widely regarded as cutting-edge innovators to a broad spectrum of listeners including b-boy purists, experimental electronic fans and indie rockers, Anti-Pop Consortium’s return is major news. The group have been praised for their stream-of consciousness lyrics, their ability to give seemingly unrelated word clusters hidden meaning, and their sonic backdrops that provide the perfect canvas for their lyrical paintings.
Since the album Arrhythmia (2002) was released to critical acclaim on Warp Records, and found them on tour with DJ Shadow and Radiohead among others, the group found it necessary to take a break and work on individual projects. Now they’re back stronger than ever. “We needed time to grow and mature as artists individually,” a statement from the group says. “Now that we have assessed our strengths and weaknesses, we are ready to re-form stronger and better than we have ever been before. The chemistry that we have together makes for exceptional music. It’s time to return.”
Ninja gives us first Food in 8 years
It’s funny I was having a discussion a few days ago about who DJ Food ‘was’ and just reminiscing about the golden days of the 90s when Ninja Tune and Mo’Wax were hot label properties, and then an email lands from the Ninja HQ announcing the first DJ Food music in 8 years. That’s right DJ Food finally returns to our ears and speakers, and it’s a pretty big return too with the first of three EPs ahead of an album next year.
Entitled ‘One Man’s Weird is Another Man’s World’ the first EP was most definitely worth the wait and is all sorts of [insert clever pun about food and music here]. Seriously though it’s got some standout moments, and I’m currently loving ‘A Trick of the Ear’, a 13 minute long epic that reminds me of the label’s golden age without being just another throwback to a time gone past.
Unfortunately we won’t/can’t give you a taster download however you can listen to snippets of the release over at Strictly Kev’s Myspace and look out for a preview in the forthcoming May show as well.
So yeah that’s Strictly Kev’s myspace, which brings up the question of who exactly is Food? Ninja have this answer for you:
Shall we get the inevitable out of the way before we proceed, The ‘who is DJ Food’ question? After people thought it was one person and we told them that it wasn’t – that it was a collective studio project – ironically it has boiled down to one person – Strictly Kev. You can see the Food project evolving in stages:
The Jazz breaks series by Coldcut and PC from 90-95 was Mk 1
Recipe For Disaster through to Kaleidoscope was Mk 2 – PC and Kev
Mk 3 has been Kev since 2002.
So there you have it. Not only is the music pretty damn fine, the artwork is a real beauty too – you can see some of it in this post and the rest on the myspace I believe as well as somewhere on Flickr but I don’t have the link at hand. Suffice to say though that it’s one of those must have for those among you who value good quality artwork and exactly the right kind of incentive for getting the wax/CD when it drops.
The EP comes out July 6th on Ninja Tune. And we can safely assume the other two EPs will be following shortly after that. Bon appetit.
