<itunes:summary>Born in 2005 from the ashes of Turntable Radio and helmed by Mr Trick and Waxfactor, Rhythm Incursions started life as a radio show airing music that 'picked up where hip hop stopped'. Since then it has evolved to continue its mission and today - in a world where hip hop has evolved to embrace its mutations that were the exceptions rather than the norm only a few years ago - it provides discerning music for discerning ears with monthly shows and guest mixes from hand picked worldwide DJs, producers and labels. The Rhythm Incursions presenting team now includes Primus Luta and DDay One from the USA, Raid System from Tokyo and Laurent Fintoni from London as well as two exclusive guest mix series curated by Friends of Friends and Raid System. We love the music we play and we think you will too.</itunes:summary>

As anyone who follows the show knows we have a lot of love for Japan, not least because I spent nearly 2 years out there a while back but also because in the time since I’ve come back to Europe, we’ve worked closely with various labels and producers to try and shine a light on the amazing talent and diversity that exists in the various underground Japanese scenes.

Another label and collective we have a lot of love for is Project Mooncircle. Since Rhythm Inc’s debut in 2005, PMC have always been close to our ears and hearts. So when Gordon from PMC hit me up recently about a compilation they were releasing showcasing Japanese talent, it was a no brainer for me to try and do something together once more. Even more so when I took a look at the line up and realised that we’d featured and/or had guest mixes from most of the artists on there.

PMC have been giving the compilation away for five days as a present to their fans and listeners. So to co-incide with our guest mix on Friday from SATO, another Japanese beatmaker we recently came across thanks to XLII and Broken Haze who also features on the compilation, PMC have agreed to let us give away the compilation for free for an extra three days starting today.

The compilation features many of our favourites including Himuro Yoshiteru, Daisuke Tanabe, Olive Oil, Ichiro_, Eccy and RLP and is a great primer to the sounds that are coming out from across all the Japanese isles. The main thing to remember is that it’s just a taster, heavily influenced by the whole beats/electronic hip hop movement of recent years yet to really get an idea of what each artist has to offer I recommend going to dig for their past releases and showcases – especially in the case of people like Olive Oil and Himuro Yoshiteru who’ve been releasing music for over a decade. Make sure you check our archives for music from all these guys and guest mixes from Olive Oil, Himuro Yoshiteru and Ichiro_. And of course hit them all up on soundcloud/myspace as well if you like what you hear.

The link will be available until Saturday lunchtime. You can preview the tracks above and download the zip file below. So tell your friends and enjoy! And if you missed it then head over to Project Mooncircle‘s website and cop the compilation.

Massive thanks to Gordon and the PMC family as always.

Being currently trapped in some sort of odd twilight zone-esque real life situation I’m not very inspired for this month’s accompanying text blurb. So instead I’ll get straight down to business. Rhythm Incursions May 2010 rounds off a very busy month for us here at Rhythm Inc towers, possibly the busiest since we started. We’ve had guest mixes from Cafeteria and Monday Jazz, Fulgeance and Donky Pitch, Marques Lafelt and the Content Label, Throwing Snow and Kper and FoF Music. Alongside this we’ve also debuted new regular shows from two new presenters: Primus Luta over in the US who heads the new RIPL monthly show, and Broken Haze and XLII in Tokyo who head the RIRS monthly show. And now this, our regular 2h monthly show. I’ve never been good at maths but I’m pretty sure that’s close to like 20h of music in one month. Not bad eh? Click here to view all this month’s show, download them, stream them, comment etc…

So this month’s show follows our usual format with 2 hours of new and forthcoming music from the likes of Hightone, Breakage, Ceschi, Kraddy, Si Begg, Paul White, The Bug, The Roots, Houseshoes, Machinedrum, Ital Tek, Digital Mystikz, Danny Breaks, Dday One, Charles Trees, Roots Manuva, Foreign Beggars and Dabrye, The Blessings and many more. Alongside this we’ve got a world premier of the EAN remix of Om Unit’s Searching, which is forthcoming on Stretched Records. The mini feature for this month continues our recent Japanese theme (last one for a while promise!) with a look at the work of Olive Oil, a producer we’ve rated for a long time and who was definitely pioneering the whole beats/electronic hip hop thing since 05/06 in his native Japan. As with many other Japanese producers he’s not that well known outside Japan but his work definitely deserves a closer look so we’ve got four tracks from releases over the last 5 years to give you an idea. And if you like what you hear be sure to check his guest mix for us from last summer.

So that’s about it, as always download links and stream players are below alongside the exhaustive tracklist. If you like what you hear go out and support the artists and labels please, and where available download stuff for free even.

We’ll be back next month alongside our two new shows, RIPL and RIRS. You can also expect some very special guest mixes, the next in our Friends of Friends mix series and a site overhaul and relaunch, which should be late June/early July depending on how busy we are. As always feedback is appreciated so hit us up in the comments and enjoy!

Our man DDay One was over in Japan last month for a short tour, from which he brought back this excellent mix from the one and only Olive Oil.

A DJ and producer originally from the southern islands but currently based in Tokyo, Olive Oil is someone I’ve known of for a while, part of the same post-DJ Krush school of sound aesthetics as people like Baku, Kentaro and Tatsuki. Those who’ve been following the shows and my own writing for a while will know that this musical approach, very particular to the new generation of Japanese producers, is one of the things that appeals the most to me when it comes to their work.

Olive Oil combines production, DJing and live shows in new and interesting ways, painting sounds in an abstract and sometimes deeply personal way. I recommend checking his past and present output for a good idea of what the man has to offer.

You can also check a special mix we podcasted on Turntable Radio late last year featuring Ken One and Olive Oil live in Fukuoka. Ken One has worked with Olive Oil on and off, and this live mix is a perfect example of the aforementioned sound aesthetic which is so special to me when it comes to the new generation of Japanese producers and DJs.

For more info on Olive Oil check his myspace and the label Oil Works. A new album is forthcoming this year I believe.

Massive thanks to DDay One for the hook up and to Olive Oil for the love. Look out for another regular show from the man DDay One very shortly.

For now though enjoy 40 odd minutes of musical bliss.
