As announced last year we’ve started a new monthly, live broadcast over in Berlin on the excellent BLN.FM – the city’s finest non-profit radio station (and I believe Germany’s first station of the kind!). When I say live, the show is being broadcasted live but is pre-recorded. Each month myself (Laurent Fintoni), Primus Luta who helms RIPL and Raid System (aka XLII and Broken Haze) who helm RIRS will take turns in curating the one hour mix/playlist and each show will be presented by myself in regular Rhythm Inc fashion running down artists, releases and related info. The flavour of our new BLN.FM shows is slightly more dancefloor than our regular shows here (aside from RIRS) so expect plenty of delicious dance related musical treats over the next twelve months.

Each monthly goes out on the first Tuesday of the month live on BLN.FM from 7PM CET (which is GMT+1, so please check your local airtime). You can stream it from BLN.FM and each show is archived both on their site and here where we will podcast them a week or so after the air date (we’re bit late this month I know).

This first show was curated by Raid System featuring one hour of their favourite dancefloor riddims of the second half of 2011. As always XLII and Broken Haze take in turn to mix 4/5 tracks each. And so we reach the end of the year and the obligatory retrospective edition. This year we’ve opted for a slightly different format, bringing together our three regular shows – RIPL, RIRS and Rhythm Incursions – into one bumper 3h edition that looks back at our favourite music from 2011. With each of us selecting one hour of music, this end of year show features primarily music and tracks which we’ve previously aired as well as a few additions culled from releases and/or artists we’ve supported this year.

We start with the Rhythm Incursions mix presented by Laurent which features a mini feature on the label of the year which is Keysound Recordings, the London label headed by Blackdown. Despite having had a fairly quiet year in comparison to other labels, Keysound’s put out three outstanding albums from Damu, LV & Joshua Idehen and Sully, as well as a handful of 12″s that have all been featured on previous shows and been staples of many sets. As the adage goes quality not quantity and while it’s true that this has actually been a busy year for the label we feel that they really deserve the accolade. Alongside Keysound, the mix features regulars from the past year as well as our favourite releases including Om Unit, Shabazz Palaces, Slugabed, EAN, Kode 9, Yosi Horikawa (with his track from the Nihon Kizuna compilation), NastyNasty, Mark Pritchard under both his solo and Africa Hitech aliases, Machinedrum, Sepalcure and 1000Names.

Primus Luta meanwhile also showcases his favourites – many recognisable from his own 2011 shows – in his mix. A straight up one hour mix with no talking it features some of this year’s best releases from both the electronic and rap world with the likes of 2562, Busdriver, Kendrick Lamar, Blk.Adonis, Welder, Shigeto, Lorn, Siriusmo, Madlib and Dibiase, DRC Music alongside Om Unit, Sepalcure and Sully who all make additional appearances.

And as for Raid System they opted to do another top 20 countdown of their favourite tracks of the year, though this time it isn’t live. Their mix starts with a short run down of our Nihon Kizuna release as well as Broken Haze’s joint EP with B.Bravo before getting into their top 20 for the year featuring many of the artists and labels they’ve been supporting including Joker, Nino, Rustie, Hudson Mohawke, Funkystepz, Zdot, Bobby Tank, Toddska, Starkey, Daniel Haaksman, Knight Riderz, S-Type, Munchi and more.

So there you have it, 2011 the year that was. The homie Om Unit has been busy of late putting the finishing touches to his new label, Cosmic Bridge recordings. We’ve been lucky to get the early info on it and we can confidently say that the first release, a collaborative 12″ between Om Unit and dubstep veteran Kromestar, is going to be making a lot of noise and turning a lot of heads.

Ahead of the 12″ release, Om Unit is giving away a dub of the B-side, Merkabah, by French producer Moresounds. The catch? By downloading it you enter yourself into a prizedraw to win a signed copy of Cosmic Bridge 001 test press. The winners of the competition will be announced on Wednesday next week.

Cosmic Bridge 001 goes on sale monday via the Sirus shop and everywhere else on July 25. You’ll be able to find all relevant purchase links and info on the label site which goes live on monday too.

The session was made possible thanks to Kid Kanevil who organised the first (of hopefully many!) Keroro Platoon Soundclash sunday session at the Brick Lane venue. He invited Mr Beatnick, Om Unit and myself along and so we thought this would be the perfect occasion to broadcast the show live from the venue.

We managed to record about 3h of it, as the wifi kept cutting out unfortunately. Above you can see the first 45 mins and below are embeds for the last two hours including 1h30 of back to back business between the four of us.

As announced earlier, this month’s regular podcasts are all cancelled aside from RIPL which will drop on Monday. Despite having been kept busy by our work on the Nihon Kizuna compilation, we’re starting to get back into normal mode here in Tokyo and I’m finally starting to be able to enjoy the holiday and get stuck into the shows I had booked, which are no longer getting cancelled as the city returns to life after a couple of interesting weeks.

This mix was originally going to be a promo mix for the Mo’ Fun party I’m doing next month. Then it also became a mix to promote the Nihon Kizuna release before the work on that kept us too busy and the success proved that additional promotion probably wasn’t that much needed, especially not when we had so much to do. And so it went back to being a mix to promote Mo’ Fun vol.12 though by then it had become a love letter to Japan, a country I feel spiritually connected to and which I have a tremendous amount of love and respect for.

A lot of the music in this mix reminds me of Japan, with many tracks – old and new – having a direct link to the country and its people. For example the Skeng remix which closes it features samples recorded by The Bug and Kode 9 in Kyoto in 2007 when they were visiting/touring. The Baku megamix of Poison Dart was recorded shortly after that same tour. Cut End was a long standing anthem at BTC before Mala released it on Deep Medi. While Yosi Horikawa’s tracks always transport me to Japan whenever I listen to them. Alongside these tracks there’s a bunch of new stuff I’m feeling and the whole thing is joined together and interspersed by recordings I made on the streets of Tokyo in 2008, namely in Ogikubo, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku and Kiyose.

So with a little delay here comes the February podcast from my good self, aptly retitled to March pt.1 – expect another show end of month as usual. With the shorter amount of days last month and relentless work I’ve had to finish before my upcoming trip (more on that soon) it just wasn’t possible to get the show done in time without rushing it. Add to this the fact that this instalment is a seriously heavy affair and I felt it was only right to take a few more days and give you something worthwhile.

Putting the tracklist together I’ve just realised that out of 41 tracks in this show, 34 are forthcoming – a good reflection of the quality and amount of good music we’ve been privileged to receive in the inbox. And there were another 10 odd tracks I wanted to include. This month’s show is also a reflection of labels we’re feeling this year. Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus’ musical child, is the subject of our mini feature with new music from Mono/Poly, Taylor McFerrin, Matthewdavid and Jerimiah Jae covering the spectrum from blunted beats to smooth, modern jazz. And then we’ve also got the Friends of Friends label (close friends of ours) represented with 3 tracks from upcoming releases by Shlomho, Groundislava and Mexicans with Guns, our other good friends at Project Mooncircle are featured with two recent releases from Robot Koch & John Robinson and Long Arm and then there’s Car Crash Set who’ve sent us new music from Pixelord and John Lemmon (awesome name btw).

Elsewhere we’ve got new music from Uncle Lew & Coco B, Kode 9 & The Spaceape, Julio Bashmore, SCB, Danny Drive Thru, Lorn, Non Projects, Rick Wilhite, Austin Peralta, Subeena, Quantic, Chrissy Murderbot, Om Unit, Nicolas Jaar, Lopez, Siriusmo, Royalty, 1000 Names, Prefuse 73 and more – covering a broad range of music. I somehow feel that this month’s show really lives up to our tagline of discerning music for discerning ears. It changes and moves and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did putting it together.
