[Video] Kyle Hall Hustles Harder
A little while back Alex from On Point stayed at mine in London one night after missing his train back to Brussels. In the morning we got some food and discussed this and that somehow ending up chatting about Kyle Hall, I think because he’d just played the week before in London alongside Floating Points and I’d briefly met him at a chat Kode 9 gave for the Wire that same week. That’s when Alex brought up the fact he’d done an interview with him in 2009 when he’d spent the summer in NYC. Being a fan of Alex’s video interviews I was curious to see it. A few weeks later he put it online but I slept on it until a tweet from Alex reminded me to check for it.
So here it is, a lengthy and entertaining chat with a seriously gifted young producer who at barely 19 years of age (I think) is obviously showing a serious potential for the future. I think the interview brings across Kyle’s youthful enthusiasm and passion really well, something I picked up on during my brief chat with him when he was in town.
I haven’t aired a lot of Kyle’s stuff on the show up till now but I’ve been really getting into it more in recent months as I’ve discovered his music through recommendations and others and so I’m gonna try and do a little feature on him next month. In the meantime enjoy this great little interview and be sure to check Alex’s original post for a link to Kyle’s set from the party he played at in NYC last summer. Oh and if you haven’t checked his other videos than fix up, some great ones including Flying Lotus, Dorian Concept, Mayer Hawthorne and Dam Funk among others.
For a taste of Kyle’s music check this mix he did for BBC Radio 1
Dam Funk interview over at On Point
This post is in a way long overdue, because we’ve been fans of On Point for a while, but somehow someway we never quite got round to linking them properly before. Thanks to the wonders of Twitter and the innanets we’re rectifying this.
On Point have just upped a video interview of Dam Funk, the Stones Throw artist that has been spearheading a west coast Funk revival as of late. Listeners of the show will know that we’ve got love for the man, as do many of the top BBC DJs like Benji B, Mary Ann Hobbs and others who’ve been supporting his stuff non stop for a while now.
Dam Funk is over for the Stones Throw Europe tour, which has been doing damages in various cities Europe wide. The Serie B boys in Spain were raving about Dam’s set in a recent email and every feedback we’ve heard has been ridiculously positive. Dam’s album drops on Stones Throw very soon, peep their site for more.
For now though enjoy this dope interview with the man, and if you’re not familiar with On Point yet be sure to check their archives of interviews which include some very interesting sessions with Flying Lotus, Jose James and many more.
Actually as I’m about to press the publish button I’ve just remembered that I think we posted the link to the Fly Lo interview last year. Still though we’re long overdue!
Edit – we’d forgot to include that the interview was actually mainly conducted by BartSibiel for the OndaSonora radio show. You can more of the interview on their show, and look out for a transcript of the interview that goes even deeper into Dam’s influences and the tracks he mentions.
Some great videos over at On-Point.be
If you’ve time to spare I recommend heading over to the On-Point website, where they have some excellent interviews and clips with the likes of Flying Lotus, Ben Westbeech, Christian Prommer and my personal highlight, José James. Worth a look – go check it out!
