Rhythm Incursions / Primus Luta aka RIPL – May ’10

I’m very happy to introduce our first (of two) brand new regular presenters to the Rhythm Incursions airwaves. Primus Luta from AvantUrb joins us for a new monthly show direct from the East coast of the United states. Alongside DDay One’s semi-regular show from L.A we’ve now got two presenters repping both sides of the country.

Regular listeners will remember the name as he’s guested on the show quite a few times in the last year, first with the retrospective Beat Construction mix in April, and then with 3 parts of his four-part The Vanguard series earlier this year. An avid music fan and musician, he holds the same interest in new music as we do and brings to the show the same open minded and embracing attitude that we try and put into ours. After chatting by email, following his work and putting his mixes on the show for the best part of a year, it felt like a natural progression to bring him on board.

Here’s some words from the man himself regarding the new show, which has been dubbed RIPL:

For the first episode of RIPL the aim was to give a broad idea of the type of stuff you can expect to hear over the coming months. This is an incredible period in music, with folk from the four corners really representing at the leading edge, where sounds and styles are being born every minute. We like to umbrella these into singular genres for simplicity, but the truth of the matter is that genre’s themselves have become modular.

Each genre, each sub-genre, is like a pebble dropping into the ocean of sound sending out ripples in concentric circles. They bounce off of each other, absorb one another’s energy, intersect, and create new ripples, new sounds, new genres, new sub genres. This show is all about the ripples. Okay I just made that up. It sounded good though, nowhere near as good as the music itself. Bring on the RIPL!!

Primus Luta will be holding it down on the second week of each month starting next month with his RIPL show. He will be followed by our other new presenters XLII and Broken Haze from Raid System in Tokyo – who regular listeners will remember we featured recently in a 3-part special – who will hold down the third week of the month starting in June (their debut show goes out next week). And then on the last week of the month our regular show will continue to go out. So that’ll be 3 times the amount of regular music coming your way each month, each from a different continent but with the same aim of bringing discerning music to discerning ears.

Please leave your feedback on this show so we can continue to build and take in your input as well.

Enjoy!

Rhythm Incursions – April ’10

April 22, 2010 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent

After nearly a week of blue, planeless skies here in London I guess we can confidently say that spring has arrived – and hopefully summer isn’t too far behind. So as we do every month let us celebrate with some music and another 2 hours of new, upcoming, old and unreleased bits for discerning ears.

On the show this month we’ve got new and forthcoming music from B-Ju, Ras G, Robot Koch Lando Kal, Lorn, Jahcoozi, FaltyDL, Om Unit, Letherette, Uncle Lew, Alex B, Take, Deru, LV and Quarta330, Shigeto, Skitz, Tokimonsta, Space Invadas, Yosi Horikawa, Dimlite and more alongside some favourites of recent times from RSD, James Blake, Uyama Hiroto, Mount Kimbie, Daisuke Tanabe and Flying Lotus among others.

This month’s mini feature meanwhile looks at the work of Japanese producer O.N.O. Probably best know as the producer for Tha Blue Herb, one of Japan’s most famous rap crews, and hailing from the northern island of Hokkaido, O.N.O has also been releasing under his name as a solo artist for well over ten years now. And it’s his work as a solo artist that’s always fascinated me since I discovered him thanks to Waxfactor about five years ago. This mini feature aims to shine a little light on the man’s incredible production range which runs from hip hop to dub, jungle to house, ambient to abstract and at times crazy electronic music. The constant in a lot of his music is his use of machines to create the sounds, something which really takes meaning when you see his live shows (youtube here and here) where equipped with 2 MPCs, a sequencer and effects units he puts on one of the most fascinating and enjoyable live electronic music shows I’ve ever seen. On the mini feature we’ve got 4 tracks from releases spanning most of his solo career and which as I said gives a nice idea of his diverse output. For more on the man check his website and those of you in/around Tokyo can catch him playing with Flying Lotus for a Tokyo Brainfeeder session soon – hopefully this might help shine some more light on his work outside Japan.

For now though sit back and enjoy another two hours of discerning music for discerning ears. As always you can grab the show directly at the link below, stream at the bottom of this post, or subscribe to our iTunes and/or RSS feed and you won’t even have to click through and read through all this every time we drop a new show. Look out for more guest mixes coming up next and some news regarding the shows. Until then enjoy!

Rhythm Incursions – Best of 09 pt 2

bo2009med

We wrap up 2009 with part 2 of our ‘best of’ mix. This is the last show of the year and continues to run down some of our favourite tracks from the last 12 months.

The mix starts with our second ‘Labels of 09′ mini feature looking at Ramp Recordings, a label that for me has had an incredible year and put out good music, consistently without worrying about scenes, genres and things like that. Doing eclectic isn’t necessarily hard though, doing it well however is and for me Ramp is one of those labels who managed to do just that: serve up a truly eclectic mix of releases, artists and styles and do so with a cohesion, quality control and consistency that only makes the music shine that much more. Add to this some quality artwork and an ear for snapping up producers that are bubbling under, like FaltyDL, Shortstuff or Tokimonsta, and you have a label which you need to make time for if you haven’t yet.

As I said they’ve had a rather busy year with something close to ten or so releases so I’ve managed to fit as much as I can in this mini feature with pretty much one track from every release this year, bar one or two. If you like what you hear then check the website and catch up with some seriously good music.

Elsewhere part 2 of the best of 09 features music from the likes of Darkstar, Peverelist, Joker, Dorian Concept, Daedelus, Clutchy Hopkins, Soundspecies, Mount Kimbie, Hudson Mohawke, Floating Points, Machinedrum, Poirier, Blue Daisy, Jamie Vex’d, Quarta330 and many more.

As usual tracklist and download links below. And if you haven’t yet may we suggest you sign up to the newsletter, RSS feed or iTunes feed and this way you’ll never miss a show.

So that’s it for 2009, and the first decade of this century/millenium. Many thanks to all our listeners, all the labels and artists we’ve worked with and who’ve supported us, all our guests, our extended family, DDay One, Mr Trick, 2tall and everyone else. It’s been a great year and here’s to 2010!

Peace

Laurent

Rhythm Incursions – Best of 09 pt1

And so here we are at the end of the year, and the decade. Let us therefore indulge in this most seasonal of traditions with a two-part, end of year ‘best of’ show for 2009. The idea was to build on last year’s first installment, and then before I knew it I’d sat down in front of the computer with a shortlist of 100+ tracks and the idea of actually doing a proper mix as opposed to a simple selection of tracks. As with last year there is no talking this time round, just pure music selection for your enjoyment.

We start with part 1 and 50 odd tracks which have all been highlights of the year here at Rhythm Inc towers from the likes of Architeq, Paul White, Alice Russell, Raekwon, DOOM, Oh No, Heliocentrics, Loops Haunt, LuckyMe, Robot Koch, Milanese, King Midas Sound, 2nd Class Citizen and many, many more. The selection is a nice representation of this year’s playlists too with a couple of previously un-aired goodies thrown in on top. As always complete tracklist below with link to the mix for those that aren’t subscribed to our feed or iTunes channels (hint hint).

As I said this best of show is more of a ‘mix’ than our normal shows – everything has been mixed and mashed up to allow me to fit as much music as I can in 75 minutes and still give every track a chance to shine.

Part two will be dropping very shortly, either on Christmas eve or Boxing day (the day after xmas) – it all depends on how much I manage to get done tonight. It will feature another 50 or so tracks from our best of 2009 list as well as the second ‘Labels of 09′ mini-feature, this time looking at the output of Ramp Recordings which is by far one of the stand out labels of the year for us. And don’t forget to check last month’s show for part of our ‘Labels of 09′ mini-feature which looked at the excellent One Handed Music.

So I won’t keep you any longer. Get stuck in, lie back, crank up the volume, ignore the family members and enjoy the first half of our best of 09 show!

Rhythm Incursions August 09

With September knocking at the door, it’s fair to say summer is well and truly over. And considering how strange it’s been weather wise here in the UK, I think it’s only fitting we end it with a blast of new music. Up this month we have plenty of forthcoming early autumn releases as well as a mini feature on Lorn, one of the producers we think you should definitely be keeping an eye on in the coming months.

Music comes in from all corners of the globe and all styles including Poirier, JS-1, Tiago, Ras G, Antipop Consortium, Luke Vibert, Shafiq Husayn, Milanese, Hessle Audio, Machine Drum, Lambent, Mos Def and more. You also get some previews of the forthcoming Ras G release on Ramp, as well as the new Friends of Friends EP.

The mini feature looks at the work of Lorn, someone who should be familiar to regular listeners as well as those who used to hang around scratch boards at the turn of the century. With an upcoming album on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, a recent release alongside Adoptahighway, plenty of dope free remixes knocking about the internet and more collaborations in the works, I selected five tracks to showcase his work. Over the years Lorn has, for me, definitely developed a sound and approach to his music that is unique and refreshing, as you’ll hopefully hear with this short selection.

So that’s it for august and for the summer, enjoy our last summer selection and we’ll be back as usual in a few weeks for the September show. In the meantime stay tuned for more guest mixes and freebies. Enjoy!

Rhythm Incursions: July 09

We’re back with a much delayed regular show. Apologies for the lack of updates and shows in June, but life got in the way with work, other projects and my own Original Cultures work. Still the upside is we’ve got quite a lot of stuff to get through, so this month there’ll be two regular shows, with the next one dropping towards the end of the month. In between we should also have a few guest mixes and other surprises so stay tuned to the site.

As for this month’s new show, it’s another 80 mins of fresh new sounds and older favourites taking in music from Cooly G, Awol One, Busdriver, Milanese, Om Unit, Clutchy Hopkins, FaltyDL, Mr Dibiase, SA-RA, Push Button Objects, Prefuse 73, Joker, Bibio, Ras G and many more. Full tracklist below.

This month’s mini feature shines a light on L.A. producer Take aka Sweatson Klank. Take is by far one of my favourite producers in the whole ‘beat scene’ movement, and someone who I think is quite often forgotten or underated when discussing the recent rise in popularity and attention surrounding the whole beat thing. More than that, having been around for 10+ years, Take links the old and the new as far as the beat thing goes, having helped to usher in the beat movement in L.A. alongside people like Kutmah, Eric Coleman and others. His work, like that of people like Prefuse and Dabrye, nicely shows this and this mini feature shines a little light on this acting as a nice introduction to those who may not know of him. Peep the tracklist for full details and check his myspace for all the latest release news. Also look out for an interview I did with the man coming out shortly, here’s a sneak peek.

As usual you can download/stream the show directly below and/or subscribe via RSS or iTunes so you never miss a thing.

Enjoy and catch you in a few weeks.

The beat generation interprets Sun Ra

sunra300

Regardless of what you might think of the current beat/instrumental hip hop movement, one of the most interesting things about it is just how well the whole thing lends itself to the reinterpretation of other genres and classics. It’s no surprise considering that reinterpretation has been a cornerstone of hip hop production since the beginning, when loops and breaks were getting chopped up. Today though the new generation of producers are taking things further thanks in no small part to the internet and modern technology allowing people to link together regardless of distance and make use of a wealth of recorded music.

With this in mind, it was a surprise to see something pop up on twitter yesterday about a bunch of producers, including L.A’s Ras G, having released a mix of reinterpretations of Sun Ra. The surprise quickly turned to pleasure when I started listening to it. There isn’t a wealth of information about it, beyond a tracklist, some art (one of which is used in this post) and a link to a myspace page for Re:source who seem to be the mastermind behind this effort. Looking at the tracklist it features quite a few known names to us, such as the aforementioned Ras G, Powell from Paris, Elaquent from Canada and Ichiro from Tokyo. Can’t say I’m too familiar with all the others though a few names ring a bell. See below for yourself.

As for the music, as I said it’s definitely worthy of your time and a keeper as far as I’m aware. It’s easy to see the inspiration that all the producers drew from, Sun Ra’s music, and yet they’ve all managed to come through with different takes, sounds, moods and atmospheres resulting in a 1h30 of instrumental goodness. Definitely a fitting tribute to an artist who I think would no doubt approve of such a project.

Looking on the myspace it seems the good people over at Monday Jazz are going to be airing this on their show, but in the meantime you can download it from the link below. Big thanks to @scaloni for the tip!
