We roll into the summer with another RIPL show from our man on the East Coast, Primus Luta. With the heatwaves blasting on all continents (well unless you’re south of the hemisphere I guess) he comes correct with 85 minutes of audio delicacies including new and recent releases from the likes of Oriol, FaltyDL, 1000 Names, Machinedrum, Eccy, Mux Mool, Throwing Snow, Darkwan, Erik L, Teebs & Jackhigh, Kuedo and many more.

He also takes time this month to shine a little light on Free the Robots, with an extensive mini feature that works as the perfect primer for anyone not familiar with this Californian producer. A favourite of Rhythm Inc since his first self-released EP 3 years ago, his official debut on Alpha Pup earlier this year has been in heavy rotation since it dropped and Primus Luta shines a light on this releease mainly with a seven track selection that will definitely leave you a fan by the end of it. Free The Robots’ ‘Ctr Alt Del’ is out now on Alpha Pup.

So that’s about it for this month, don’t think you need much more to convince to get on this so I’ll leave you in the capable hands of Primus Luta and stay tuned for guest mixes from Mr Beatnick, Draco and our FoF mix series later this month as well as the usual shows.

Fulgeance – Donky Pitch 1st Birthday mix

May 7, 2010 by Laurent

Regular listeners will know that we’ve been big fans of French MPC maestro Fulgeance for a while now. Actually pretty much ever since I first heard him back in late 07 and even more after he dropped the classic ‘Revenge of the Nerds’ on All City Records 7×7 Beatstrumental series in 08. Since then the Frenchman has continued to conquer dancefloors the world over with his own brand of Low Club music – an infectious mix of instrumental hip hop, French electro, slowed down house and other club friendly music – and releases on his own Musique Large label as well as the mighty One Handed Music. And while his music bangs hard on record, he really needs to be seen live for the full effect, as he brings the roof down using 2 MPCs and making people move in ways you never thought possible using that trusty, old hip hop workhorse. He really is a showman in every sense of the word, and I don’t say that lightly.

So when the lovely people at Donky Pitch hit us up about airing a mix from the man in celebration of their forthcoming 1st birthday party, it was pretty much a no-brainer. Based in Brighton, Donky Pitch have been putting parties on over the last year with the kind of line up and open musical ethos that is very much in line with us here at Rhythm Inc, I particularly like their tagline of “Whatever you wanna call it… Glitch, Wonk, Laser Bass, Crunk, Wonky, Glitch-Hop, Skweee, Purple Funk, Wonk-Hop, Experimental and or Instrumental Hip Hop, Dubstep, Electronica… it’s got us by the balls and we like it.” They’ve hosted people who’ve regularly featured on the show and they’ve also been big supporters of the Skweee sound, even hosting the UK screening of the ‘We Call It Skweee’ documentary.

So to celebrate their first candle we bring you 45 minutes of Fulgeance action especially mixed for the occasion. Scroll down for full details of the party itself, which is taking place on May 20th in Brighton, as well as all the linkage you need and amazing pictures of a very special cake made for the occasion. And a little further below for the usual direct download links, stream and tracklist for the mix.

Funny side story, I played a gig with Fulgeance a few weeks back in Italy and over dinner told him how Mr Trick had described his music to me as ‘chopped and screwed house’ the first time he heard it. Fulgeance liked the description so much he went and named a track on his forthcoming new EP after that! (you can view a live version of said track here) So this is definitely a family affair of sorts and a huge pleasure to hosts these guys on the show.

Donky Pitch’s first birthday will be going down at The Volks in Brighton on Thursday May 20th, from 10 till 3. Tickets are available online here. As for the line up, it features the talents of:
Fulgeance – Live
Randy Barracuda – Live
Slugabed
Rekordah
Ghost Mutt
Boss Kyte – Live

Expect plenty of beats, bass, skweee and live madness. And if you’re lucky maybe even a slice of this cake…

For more on Donky Pitch check their Facebook Fan page and for Fulgeance the myspace. The man has a new EP dropping on Musique Large shortly I believe.

For now though sit back and get large in the headphones or on the stereo and I really can’t recommend enough you get down to Brighton for the party on the 20th as it’ll be one to remember for sure. And we can all do with a party by the seaside every once in a while. Oh and many thanks to David at Donky Pitch for the hook up.

We return to the regular broadcasts with our first show of the year, and we are starting 2010 as we intend to continue with 2 hours of fresh new music and forthcoming releases alongside some recent favourites.

It seems 2010 is starting rather well, with a slew of new releases and announced albums for the first quarter of the year. With this in mind I decided to make the mini feature a look forward at what 2010 has in stock both from artists and labels I am personally looking forward to. So I selected 10 tracks for 2010 which I think highlight this nicely. In no particular order we’ve got Om Unit, Illum Sphere, Slugabed, Shlomo, Instra:mental, Dizz1, GOD and Loops Haunt, Teebs and Jackhigh, Letherette, Lorn and labels like All City Records, Svetlana Industries, FoF and Nod Navigators.

Though to be honest pretty much the whole show is a look forward to the new year and most of the artists are worthy of being ones to watch for 2010. Alongside this we’ve got new music from the likes of Mr Chop & CL Smooth, Ernest Gonzales, Bullion, Aquadrop, Jose James, Hyperdub, Lone, Robot Koch, Greymatter and more.

As usual you can download the show directly at the link below. If you want to make your life easier than make sure to subscribe and never miss a show. You can do so via email, RSS or our iTunes feed all of which are easily accessible with the fancy little icons on the right hand side.

So that’s it for this month, I’ll let you to sit back and crank up the stereo to 11. Look out for a series of guest mixes and live shows from Japan starting this weekend. And I’ll be back with another show next month with more of the same. Until then enjoy the music and if you like what you hear than be sure to go out there and support the music and artists.

Rhythm Incursions – Best of 09 pt 2

December 24, 2009 by Laurent
Filed under Podcast, Presented by Laurent

bo2009med

We wrap up 2009 with part 2 of our ‘best of’ mix. This is the last show of the year and continues to run down some of our favourite tracks from the last 12 months.

The mix starts with our second ‘Labels of 09′ mini feature looking at Ramp Recordings, a label that for me has had an incredible year and put out good music, consistently without worrying about scenes, genres and things like that. Doing eclectic isn’t necessarily hard though, doing it well however is and for me Ramp is one of those labels who managed to do just that: serve up a truly eclectic mix of releases, artists and styles and do so with a cohesion, quality control and consistency that only makes the music shine that much more. Add to this some quality artwork and an ear for snapping up producers that are bubbling under, like FaltyDL, Shortstuff or Tokimonsta, and you have a label which you need to make time for if you haven’t yet.

As I said they’ve had a rather busy year with something close to ten or so releases so I’ve managed to fit as much as I can in this mini feature with pretty much one track from every release this year, bar one or two. If you like what you hear then check the website and catch up with some seriously good music.

Elsewhere part 2 of the best of 09 features music from the likes of Darkstar, Peverelist, Joker, Dorian Concept, Daedelus, Clutchy Hopkins, Soundspecies, Mount Kimbie, Hudson Mohawke, Floating Points, Machinedrum, Poirier, Blue Daisy, Jamie Vex’d, Quarta330 and many more.

As usual tracklist and download links below. And if you haven’t yet may we suggest you sign up to the newsletter, RSS feed or iTunes feed and this way you’ll never miss a show.

So that’s it for 2009, and the first decade of this century/millenium. Many thanks to all our listeners, all the labels and artists we’ve worked with and who’ve supported us, all our guests, our extended family, DDay One, Mr Trick, 2tall and everyone else. It’s been a great year and here’s to 2010!

Peace

Laurent

Nov 25th – Ramp Recordings @ The Lightbox, London

November 9, 2009 by Laurent

Early heads-up for those in/around London: on November 25th, Ramp Recordings will be hosting their first official event at the Lightbox in Vauxhall, London. As you know we don’t usually do too many event related news round these parts, but suffice to say that if you can make one party this month in London, or possibly even this winter, I highly recommend it’s this one. Nevermind it’s midweek, these guys have laid on a serious line up that reflects the label’s amazing year.

Started around 4 years ago, Ramp Recordings have been working at it slowly over the years, releasing music from a variety of artists, most notably Count Bass D, Kan Kick and Georgia Anne Muldrow, but 2009 has really seen the label hit a more than respectable cruising altitude with an output that as so far, for me, made them one of the labels of the year by a long mile. By combining quality control, diversity and art they’ve achieved what a lot of labels wish for, and still managed to keep their integrity and a low-key profile, though hopefully that last one might change as people realise what they’ve been missing. To give you an idea, in 2009 the label has released music from Flying Lotus & Declaime, Shortstuff, Ras G, FaltyDL, Zomby, Slugabed and a collaborative compilation with Flogsta Dancehall showcasing Skweee music. And there’s a lot more in the pipeline.

Back to the point, Ramp are having their first party in London this month and for the occasion they’ve brought in some special guests all the way from L.A. alongside some of their own artists. Full details are below and stay tuned for a freebie from TOKiMONSTA, one of the L.A. artists that will be playing at the gig, to celebrate this fine event and her forthcoming release on the label. From the email we received this morning:

It’s been a long time coming, and with a roster that most other labels would pawn their offices for, RAMP Recordings are set to hold their first official event at the Lightbox in Vauxhall, London. Championed nearly weekly by Mary Anne Hobbs, and heavily backed by Gilles Peterson, L.A. resident and newly signed Tokimonsta makes the flight all the way from L.A. for an exclusive London show. Recently accepted to the RBMA 2010 in London, back home Toki rolls with Flying Lotus and fellow RAMP label mate Ras G, and is readying her “Cosmic Intoxication” EP, which is set to drop soon. Next to step up, and with a debut live PA show no less, is SBTRKT & Sampha, performing amongst other future garage joints, the highly anticipated RAMP single ”Break Off”, currently being battered by Annie Mac & Sinden, and highly tipped for huge success next year. Joining Toki from the planet’s current hot bed of talent that is L.A., P.U.D.G.E follows his astounding session for Mary Anne Hobbs with his European debut show, dropping knowledge from his upcoming “Idiot Box” LP. The RAMP contingent is in full effect, with funky/garage monkey Shortstuff, A.D.H.D. riddled problem child Slugabed, and the big boss man, Tom@RAMP, a.k.a. The White Suge Knight, firing bullets from behind the decks.

So all that’s left to say is get your tickets in and mark the date in your diaries. You can find more details on the Facebook event page, as for tickets I haven’t got any link information at hand unfortunately but will update soon as I do. Or keep an eye on their myspace.
