We roll into the month of December with the prerequisite end of year best of’s and playlists. Up first is Primus Luta with his RIPL show. He runs down his favourite joints of 2010, well the ones he managed to fit in, using his award system – which he premiered back in the summer with the mid-year awards.

In there you’ll find a veritable who’s who of labels and artists we’ve supported this year and since we started. Labels like Planet Mu (who got label of the year from me in November), Hyperdub, Warp, Brainfeeder, R&S, Project Mooncircle all feature alongside Alpha Pup which Primus decided to make his label of the year. The mini feature looks at the Alpha Pup’s output as well as that of the labels it distributes like Elm & Oak, Brainfeeder and Friends of Friends.

Here’s some words from the man himself on the show:

Awwe man this was probably my hardest show to compile, because there was just way too much good music this year. I feel bad for all of the amazing stuff that I left off. Even more, the whole time I’m compiling goodness just keeps dropping. Makes for an exciting 2011, but first of course a little recap of the incredible 2010. Back in August we did the RIPL Mid-Year Report, and so for this episode we’ve got the 2010 RIPL Awards. Tried to cover a good spectrum of things with this and give the respect where it was due, but again there was just way too much music to possibly represent it all in just one show. See you in 2011, promises to be killer.

We won’t bore you with more words and instead just let you get stuck in with what is definitely a great opening show for our end of year recap. It’s going to make my end of year show certainly more difficult to compile!

Being currently trapped in some sort of odd twilight zone-esque real life situation I’m not very inspired for this month’s accompanying text blurb. So instead I’ll get straight down to business. Rhythm Incursions May 2010 rounds off a very busy month for us here at Rhythm Inc towers, possibly the busiest since we started. We’ve had guest mixes from Cafeteria and Monday Jazz, Fulgeance and Donky Pitch, Marques Lafelt and the Content Label, Throwing Snow and Kper and FoF Music. Alongside this we’ve also debuted new regular shows from two new presenters: Primus Luta over in the US who heads the new RIPL monthly show, and Broken Haze and XLII in Tokyo who head the RIRS monthly show. And now this, our regular 2h monthly show. I’ve never been good at maths but I’m pretty sure that’s close to like 20h of music in one month. Not bad eh? Alongside this we’ve got a world premier of the EAN remix of Om Unit’s Searching, which is forthcoming on Stretched Records. The mini feature for this month continues our recent Japanese theme (last one for a while promise!) with a look at the work of Olive Oil, a producer we’ve rated for a long time and who was definitely pioneering the whole beats/electronic hip hop thing since 05/06 in his native Japan. As with many other Japanese producers he’s not that well known outside Japan but his work definitely deserves a closer look so we’ve got four tracks from releases over the last 5 years to give you an idea. And if you like what you hear be sure to check his guest mix for us from last summer.

Right then. You might have been wondering when the hell this mix was going to be online, and rightly too considering we announced it a while back. In the end, with life and other fun things getting in the way we decided to hold it back until the festivities were starting, kind of like a virtual serving of extra stuffing. And being that it’s the season of over indulging and excess, this month’s show is a best of 08 mix special: no talking, just 70 mins of some of the best and our favouritest music of the year. Whether you’re enjoying the festivities with the family, alone or with friends, away or at home, at work or on holiday (I did work last on xmas day so I know it’s not an impossibility, big up those who are!) we hope you enjoy our last show of the year.

Not only does this show include some of our favourite singles and album tracks from 2008, it also comes with a xmas-sized mini feature looking at the ouput of the Hyperdub label, which gets label of the year by a long mile, regardless of genre.

2008 has definitely been an interesting year musically to say the least. Trick remarked earlier on in the month that album wise it hasn’t been an exceptional year, which I’d have to agree with to an extent. A few albums do stand out, like say The Bug’s ‘London Zoo,’ and between putting this mix together and doing the obligatory end of year list thing over on my blog I’ve come to the realisation that this year it’s much more singles, EPs and certain album tracks that stand out for me. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing either.

This end of year special podcast reflects all of this with tracks from some of the year’s stand out albums, singles, EPs, and even a couple of unreleased numbers that have created quite a lot of interest on and offline. This show is also definitely a bit of a who’s who of the artists and the labels that have populated our tracklists on the regular since Rhythm Incursions moved to its podcast-only format back in June, with the likes of Nosaj Thing, Flying Lotus, Kode 9, Maga Bo, The Bug, J Dilla and more.

Another thing reflected in the mix is the return of the producer to the front in certain corners of the hip hop world (see explosion of interest around Flying Lotus for proof of that) and how this return has been distinctively led by a more awkward and experimental approach to instrumental tracks, also echoed in the work of certain producers affiliated with the dubstep, grime and other electronic scenes. While far from encompassing everything that happened this year, these two musical ‘tendencies’ have definitely had a big impact on fans, producers and DJs alike.

So that’s about it. We’re officially done for 08.
