Our Tokyo dynamic duo returns for another session, not letting the fact that one half – XLII – is in Europe for the next few months get in the way of bringing you the freshest dancefloor sounds.

As always it’s an epic hour long ride into new and recently released music with the likes of Untold, Starkey, Wiley, Monolithium, Girl Unit, Geste, Virus Syndicate and more all making an appearance. Also included in this month’s show is a preview of Broken Haze’s new split EP with B. Bravo and new music from Raid System family member Eccy.

And so the end of year arrives and with it our last show of 2010. The last of our end of year shows, this one follows the 2009 best of mix I did last year though instead of spreading across two shows I tried to squeeze all I could into one session. Make no mistake, despite the naysayers and the doom and gloom surrounding the music industry in general, for me 2010 has been a rather good year music wise. On one side there’s seemingly more music than ever, and with that comes a certain lack of quality control. On the other, this lack of quality control and breakdown of the traditional models within the industry has I believe given various labels and artists in the ‘underground’ a lot more potential for flourishing. As the old saying goes, you’ve just got to look closer to find the gold among all the noise.

I originally had 160 odd tracks earmarked for this show. A couple of days of ruminating and trying things out and I managed to keep it down to 60 or so, as well as the mini feature on All City Records, my label of the year (as you should know by now – they did two guest mixes for us earlier this month). In the process of putting the mix together it first occurred to me that if you consider the amount of music I received this year for the show (at a guess I’d say 500 odd releases, maybe even more) then there really is a big job of sifting through everything to find the stuff that’s actually worthy of a best of mix. Even then I had to leave stuff out that I wished could have been fitted. The criteria (if you will) was a mix of what I’d played on the show in the last 12 months and which I considered to be well above par, as well as tracks that have been staples in my DJ sets and tracks from albums that have barely left my portable player all year. The result is the following tracklist. Apologies to those I missed, but if anything it’s the perfect excuse for you to go over all the shows we’ve put out in the last year (hint hint). I also tried to avoid too much duplication with the previous two end of year shows from Primus Luta and Raid System.

So that’s it for 2010, another year under the belt and onwards. Rhythm Incursions has seen a lot of changes this year – new website, new presenters, new regular guest series. It’s been an absolute blast, and I want to thank everyone who’s made the show what it is and who works out of their own time towards continuing to make this one of the finer podcast series out there. In no specific order much love and thanks to Primus Luta, XLII, Broken Haze, Dday One and Leeor at FoF for their work. A big thank you as well to all the labels, artists and PR who send us stuff and take time to talk to us, sometimes even bowing to our pressures for guest spots. Among them (too many to mention) special thanks to Olan at All City, Gordon at Mooncircle, Marcus at Planet Mu & Hyperdub, Flip at Error Broadcast, Melissa at Tailored, the Outpost, Alex Nut and Alex Chase. As announced last week our label of the year for 2010 is All City – or more accurately my label of the year as Primus Luta and the Raid System boys are also choosing their own. With this in mind, we’ve been busy talking to Olan, who runs the Dublin-based label, over the last few months to arrange a guest mix to celebrate the occasion. As it turns out he offered to do two mixes, the first of which is this mini mix of 10 records from 2010. This will be followed by a proper mix called ‘A Random Slice of Cali’ celebrating his love of music from the area as well as All City’s L.A 10 x 10 series which was released throughout the year on the label (and which we’ve featured extensively throughout the year on the shows).

First up though are 10 records from the year which Olan wanted to share. Funnily enough these reflect a lot of the records that we’ve also enjoyed here at Rhythm Inc towers with artists like Floating Points, Shed, Kyle Hall and Untold all appearing. And for the trainspotters out there the mix also includes the amazing collabo between Martyn and Mike Slott which the label will be releasing shortly.

Not much more to say on this – it’s really just a little taster of All City’s musical preferences and the perfect appetizer for the main mix which will drop tomorrow! Be sure to stay tuned for that.

Alongside the excellent 10 x 10 series which the label has put out this year, featuring luminaries and newcomers including Dam Funk, Matthewdavid, Take, Tokimonsta, Computer Jay, Daedelus, and many more, you should also get the Beatstrumental 7 x 7 series which preceeded it in 2008 and was an excellent showcase of the growing beat scene post-Beat Dimensions with 7″s from Fulgeance, Le NKO, Hudson Mohawke, Mike Slott and more. Quite frankly every release on the label has been of quality and so you should really just treat yourself to as much as you can!

We roll into the month of December with the prerequisite end of year best of’s and playlists. Up first is Primus Luta with his RIPL show. He runs down his favourite joints of 2010, well the ones he managed to fit in, using his award system – which he premiered back in the summer with the mid-year awards.

In there you’ll find a veritable who’s who of labels and artists we’ve supported this year and since we started. Labels like Planet Mu (who got label of the year from me in November), Hyperdub, Warp, Brainfeeder, R&S, Project Mooncircle all feature alongside Alpha Pup which Primus decided to make his label of the year. The mini feature looks at the Alpha Pup’s output as well as that of the labels it distributes like Elm & Oak, Brainfeeder and Friends of Friends.

Here’s some words from the man himself on the show:

Awwe man this was probably my hardest show to compile, because there was just way too much good music this year. I feel bad for all of the amazing stuff that I left off. Even more, the whole time I’m compiling goodness just keeps dropping. Makes for an exciting 2011, but first of course a little recap of the incredible 2010. Back in August we did the RIPL Mid-Year Report, and so for this episode we’ve got the 2010 RIPL Awards. Tried to cover a good spectrum of things with this and give the respect where it was due, but again there was just way too much music to possibly represent it all in just one show. See you in 2011, promises to be killer.

We won’t bore you with more words and instead just let you get stuck in with what is definitely a great opening show for our end of year recap. It’s going to make my end of year show certainly more difficult to compile!

We go back to Japan, and more specifically Tokyo, for our next guest mix this time roping in the talents of young producer Eccy (pronounced Eksy) who is a close friend of our own Tokyo family, the Raid System collective and label.

It’s through them, and twitter and facebook, that this mix happened. I’ve been following Eccy’s work for over a year now, first coming across him via a video Dubken did of one of his tracks from his last album ‘Loovia Mythos’ – an album which we’ve bumped regularly here and played on the show too.

Following this album, which explored beats and electronic hip hop, Eccy’s moved into more upbeat territories in particular the UK Funky sounds and mutations that have originated from London and the UK over the last year. His new release, Flavour of Vice EP, is coming out before the end of the year on his own Slye Records with remixes from London’s Subeena and a flavour, pardon the pun, that is distinctively in line with the capital’s more tropical and percussive riddims.

Reflecting this is the guest mix he put together for us, called Milk It. It features a raft of the most interesting producers to have played around with UK Funky and House templates in the last year from Altered Natives to LuckyMe’s Jacques Greene, Hypno, Doc Daneeka, Subeena, Seiji, Roska and of course Eccy himself.

Sometimes life gets in the way, especially when like us here at Rhythm Incursions you do something for the love out of your own time. Last month both Primus Luta and myself had to cancel our regular shows due to various life stuff getting in the way – in his case a recent trip to Seattle for the Decibel festival and some rehearsals for his new CSS show (remember the debut mix here for download). The plus side of missing a show though is that there’s plenty to go through the next time around, and so this month’s RIPL show comes packing with fresh bits with just over 2 hours of music for your ears.

Our second guest mix of the year comes courtesy of a London-based trio little of which is known apart from the most important thing – their music is good. LV is the name, and I first heard of them a few years back when Steve Goodman aka Kode 9 released a track of theirs (afaik their first release) on his Hyperdub label. A sweet, dub-tinged ballad called ‘Globetrotting’ it was love at first hearing you could say.

Since then I’ve kept an ear out for them, notably coming across their remix of Willie Isz earlier last year (which we featured on the November 09 show). They’ve released on a variety of other labels, including Ramp, primarily remixes. After all that I bumped into one of the trio, Simon, at the Hyperdub 5 party in November, and the following week once more at the Ramp party. We got chatting, exchanged emails and I mentioned a guest mix would be a welcome addition to the Rhythm Inc catalogue not least because I was a fan and because following our chats I could tell they would fit right at home with our ethos and listeners.

As I returned to the world of the internet this week I thought of hitting Simon back up for the guest mix when, great minds thinking alike, an email popped in with a link and tracklist. I instantly downloaded it, fired it up and as we chatted by email it occurred to me that this was a truly great guest mix and perfect addition to our series – it goes deep, treading territories we don’t often explore with a dubby vibe we absolutely love.

Think back to the beginnings of the show (some 5+ years ago) when Trick and Waxfactor put forward their love of people like Wordsound and the Agriculture as the basis for Rhythm Inc’s birth and you might start to be close to what the guys have delivered. I am well and truly stoked and cannot thank them enough.

Featuring primarily music from other people, including favourites of ours such as Untold and Pole, they’ve also put in an unofficial (but approved) remix they did for Klaus Roeder, and it’s an absolute corker.

The name of the mix comes from Simon, as I asked him for some words for the post he didn’t give me anything but mentioned that the mix was the ‘aural equivalent of a blanket, useful for the winter days’ – and well that’s the perfect description.

Look out for more from them in 2010 on Hyperdub as well as Soul Jazz and Keysound recordings among others. We’ll be sure to let you know and air the new music as it comes. They were also talking about a session they did with Tokyo’s Quarta330 when he was town last November, and I really hope something comes of that as it would be a thoroughly entertaining combo.

We wrap up 2009 with part 2 of our ‘best of’ mix. This is the last show of the year and continues to run down some of our favourite tracks from the last 12 months.

The mix starts with our second ‘Labels of 09′ mini feature looking at Ramp Recordings, a label that for me has had an incredible year and put out good music, consistently without worrying about scenes, genres and things like that. Doing eclectic isn’t necessarily hard though, doing it well however is and for me Ramp is one of those labels who managed to do just that: serve up a truly eclectic mix of releases, artists and styles and do so with a cohesion, quality control and consistency that only makes the music shine that much more. Add to this some quality artwork and an ear for snapping up producers that are bubbling under, like FaltyDL, Shortstuff or Tokimonsta, and you have a label which you need to make time for if you haven’t yet.

As I said they’ve had a rather busy year with something close to ten or so releases so I’ve managed to fit as much as I can in this mini feature with pretty much one track from every release this year, bar one or two. If you like what you hear then check the website and catch up with some seriously good music.

Despite it being nearly one week into November, we’re bringing you the October show which suffered the delaying combo of both my laptop dying and a rather nasty cold hitting me in the same week. The show was actually wrapped 2 weeks ago but we couldn’t get it out till now. Lucky you though, as you’ll be getting another show in a few weeks with our November edition.

I realised as I was putting the tracklist together that for some reason this month features a rather high number of freely available tracks. This is in part a reflection of my own listening habits (and the fact I spend way too much time on the internet) but also I think of the move by artists and labels to make more music available freely as a way to promote paying releases, gigs and other merchandise. Lastly I would also say that the increasing number of free tracks in our playlists this year is a reflection of the increase in quality in free music. Whereas before free tracks where often throwaway material, today an increasing number of artists are releasing bootlegs, remixes and their own tracks for free and keeping a high quality control on it. Again I think this is something that plays into the aforementioned ‘free music as promotion’ vehicle. All the artists with a freely available track in this month’s show also have physical, paying releases and quite a few are actually established artists in their own ‘scenes’.

What about the music though? This month we take in a rather wide range of music, reflecting the diversity of what’s been trickling into our inbox/hands. From the psychedelic meets Afghani traditional music of Ariana Delawari to straight beats (and some incredible flips) from KenLo, fLako, Fulgeance and Dibiase via tribal house vibes from Blue Daisy, 21st century boogie from Dam Funk, hard-hitting hip hop from Kids in Tracksuits and Mr Lif and forward-thinking productions from Om Unit, Mike Slott and Talen. And that’s only part of it, there’s more and it’s all high quality as far as I’m concerned.

This month’s mini-feature is a tie-in with the 5th anniversary of the Hyperdub label. Headed by Kode 9, Hyperdub has long been a favourite at Rhythm Inc, with Trick regularly playing the label’s early releases as both the show and label share roughly the same birthdays. To celebrate their anniversary Hyperdub have curated an incredible compilation, called ’5′, spanning two CDs or 5 12″s and featuring classic material from the label’s archive, unreleased one-offs and 15 or so brand new productions from the label’s artists and friends including names like Flying Lotus, Mala, Martin, Samiyam, Ikonika, Quarta330, and more. It’s fair to say that ’5′ is the final nail in the coffin for lesser labels, if it was even needed, that shows just how influential and forward thinking Hyperdub has been as an independent over the years. From its humble beginnings to its current wide palette of sounds, Hyperdub continues to do what everyone least expects, and that’s just one of many reasons why we love them and their music. For the feature we’ve got four tracks from the compilation taking in The Bug under his King Midas Sound alias, Mala, Kode 9 and Samiyam – music as different as it comes and yet somehow logically intertwined.
